Research suggests 70 percent of children in the U.S. are either low or deficient in Vitamin D. Find out why adequate D is important for your family's health.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D critical hormone

The sunshine vitamin hit the health spotlight when researchers discovered Vitamin D's role in numerous critical body processes, and because many people are low. "I believe [vitamin D] is the number one public health advance in medicine in the last twenty years," says Dr. John Whitcomb of Aurora Sinai Medical Center.

Vitamin D's metabolite, calcitriol, is a secosteroid hormone that unlocks hereditary information encoded in an organism’s DNA. Dr. John J. Cannell, Executive Director of the Vitamin D Council, writes on his website, “The human genome contains more than 2,700 binding sites for calcitriol; those binding sites are near genes involved in virtually every known major disease of humans.”

 Vitamin D is involved in:

  • Calcium absorption in the intestinal tract
  • Growing and remodeling bone
  • Modulating cell growth
  • Immunity and neuromuscular function
  • Reducing inflammation

How to get enough vitamin D

Vitamin D doesn't naturally occur in many foods, but you can up your intake with:

  1. Sun. Exposure to the sun’s UVB rays produces about 10,000 international units of D3 in minutes. Worried about a sunburn? The amount of D needed daily is produced in about half the time it takes your skin to turn pink.

  2. Supplements. Vitamin D3 and D2 are available. Doctors often prescribe vitamin D2, although most experts prefer D3 because it’s similar to what the sun produces.

Kids and vitamin D

Low vitamin D in kids can cause rickets, which leads to bone fractures and deformities. Moreover, a 2009 study published in Pediatrics found that 9 percent of kids ages 1 to 25 were deficient in vitamin D and 61 percent were low. The researchers linked their findings to increased cardiovascular risk.

There were differences in vitamin D levels according to race. However, kids with levels less than 30 ng/mL were more likely to have low serum calcium and HDL and higher blood pressure.

Read about asthma in kids and vitamin D >>

Pediatricians from Johns Hopkins Children's Center linked low D and anemia in children. Kids with levels lower than 20 ng/mL had a 50 percent higher risk for anemia. Every 1 ng/ml increase in D dropped risk by 3 percent.

Vitamin D dosing debated

While most experts believe adults and kids need more vitamin D, not everyone agrees on the amount. In 2010 the Food and Nutrition Board released new recommendations:

  • Children and adults up to age 70: 600 IU
  • Seniors 70 and older: 800 IU

The panel concluded that for 97 percent of the population, reaching 20 ng/ml is sufficient, although several medical groups suggest 30 ng/ml is necessary for optimal bone health.

Read the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations >>

Dr. John Cannell, Executive Director of the Vitamin D Council, recommends a higher optimal level all year round for adults and children -- 50 to 80 ng/ml. The exact dosing, explains Dr. Cannell, varies according to age, weight, overall health and sun exposure.

The Vitamin D Council suggests:

  • Healthy children under 1 year old: 1,000 IU
  • Healthy children over 1 year old: 1,000 IU/25 pounds of body weight
  • Healthy adults and adolescents: at least 5,000 IU
  • Pregnant and lactating mothers: at least 6,000 IU

“Children and adults with chronic health conditions such as autism, MS, cancer, heart disease or obesity may need as much as double these amounts,” says Cannell.

Each Christmas, my mother makes hundreds of amazingly delicious cookies. My favorite batch is always the sugar cookies because growing up, these were the cookies she always allowed my brothers and me to decorate. We'd dump sprinkles and squeeze gobs of frosting onto each cookie, carefully swiping a finger full of decadent icing each time. Luckily, like my hair styles and fashion sense, my decorating skills have vastly improved over the years, and the batch I made this year is almost too pretty to eat!

Low fat snowflake cookie

The great thing about sugar cookies is that you can shape, mold and decorate them however you'd like! The key to a unique cookie is to think outside of the box. For example, I used cake and cupcake icing to make the white puffs in the middle, which give each snowflake a totally unique look. In nature, no snowflake ever looks the same, so why not apply the same rule to your cookies? Plus, these cookies have almost half the amount of butter of normal sugar cookies, so you can eat without the guilt!

Low-fat snowflake cookie recipe

Yields: 24 cookies

Ingredients:

  • 5 tablespoons soft butter
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1-2/3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Vanilla buttercream
  • Food dye
  • Cookie icing gel

Directions:

  1. In a medium bowl, cream butter and sugar.  Add egg and vanilla, mixing well. In another bowl, carefully whisk together flour, baking powder and salt. Add flour mixture to the creamed butter mixture, one cup at a time, mixing in between additions. *Dough will be crumbly; it'll harden up.
  2. Form a dough ball with dough and wrap tightly in plastic wrap or wax paper. Place in refrigerator and chill overnight.
  3. Once dough has chilled, preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a cookie sheet in foil and liberally spray with cooking spray. Then, on a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to about a 1/4-inch thickness. Lightly flour the edgles of a snowflake cookie cutter and cut out shapes. Re-roll dough scraps and repeat until all dough is used.
  4. Place cookies at least one inch apart and bake for eight to 12 minutes, or until cookies are golden brown. Place on a wire cooling rack and cool compeltely before frosting.
  5. While cookies cool, prepare buttercream as directed. Carefully scoop frosting into a piping bag . When cookies are cooled, decorate to your preference. To make the giant puff of "snow" in the middle like I did, just squeeze the buttercream into the middle until the center is covered. Sprinkle with gold sprinkles and enjoy!

Paparazzi stop Alyssa Milano from breastfeeding in public

Alyssa Milano is now a proud breastfeeding pro, even if her start to nursing son Milo was "awkward." Yet she's still afraid to feed in public for fear the paparazzi will photograph her.

Alyssa Milano

New mom Alyssa Milano is happily sharing her breastfeeding story. The 38-year-old, who welcomed son Milo in August, has opened up about the experience to Best for Babes, a site dedicated to helping mothers make informed, guilt- and judgement-free decisions about breastfeeding.

"I think the thing I like best about breastfeeding is the closeness I feel to Milo and knowing that he's getting the best of me," said Alyssa Milano. "The biggest surprise was how something that is so natural can be so awkward in the beginning."

When asked about nursing in public Alyssa Milano replied, "I wish I could breastfeed in public without feeling as though a picture would show up on TMZ. I’ve breastfed Milo in my car numerous times and in fitting rooms at stores. But mostly, when we go out I bring a bottle of expressed milk because sadly, I'm just not comfortable feeding him in public."

Tips on how to breastfeed in public from SheKnows Parenting >>

Alyssa Milano, pictured here on Dec. 5 at the Los Angeles premiere of New Year's Eve, often turns to the social network Twitter to get advice from fellow moms.

"The greatest thing about Twitter is the interaction," the actress said. "I can ask a question about anything at all and get a good variety of opinions from everyone. When I tweet about breastfeeding or baby stuff in general,  it feels good knowing that women are there to support each other. The mommy club is pretty special and I love being a part of it."

Her latest tweet? Alyssa Milano asked her over 1.8 million Twitter followers Tuesday afternoon, "Anyone else's baby hold their breath in the wind?"

Along with keeping busy as mother to Milo, Alyssa Milano can currently be seen in the film New Year's Eve as a nurse -- and heard as the voice of Daphne Snow in Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.

How to survive the holidays with your family

The holidays are near and your Xanax prescription might not be enough. Spending the next few weeks with your mother-in-law -- whose favorite activity is counting the calories you consume and telling you why her dogs deserve a room of their own -- may in fact drive you over the edge of sanity this year. Learn time-tested tips for surviving the holidays when it's all in the family.

stressed out woman during the holidays

Keep your sense of humor

Let’s face facts. Everyone’s family is a little bit crazy , and the holidays often contain more stress than we are willing to admit. Instead of feeling flustered and embarrassed while Uncle Elbert spends the greater portion of Christmas dinner trying to get your sister’s boyfriend to sign up for his Ponzi scheme and your mother-in-law shows up with all three of her Great Danes to stay the week, pretend your life is a TV sitcom and have a good laugh. Remember, whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

Read more on tips for surviving less-than-perfect holidays >>

Keep it real

Don’t kid yourself. The perfect, magical holidays sold to us in commercials are nothing but a peppermint fantasy. This is real life, and yes, that’s your grandma standing on the porch cursing out the neighbors in her underwear. Skip the required viewing of It’s a Wonderful Life, grab an extra mug of eggnog and join your grandma on the porch. This might be fun after all.

Learn more holiday tips for coping with difficult family members >>

Set boundaries

While it might not be easy to turn away your mother-in-law and her oversize pets when they show up at your door unannounced, remember that it is perfectly okay to set boundaries. “Sure, Mom! We’d love to have your very large, hairy dogs stay for the week even though the kids and I are allergic. I prepared a lovely shelter in the backyard for them. I just hope they won’t get their new Christmas sweaters dirty.”

More tips for how to handle the mother-in-law from hell >>

Bring a decoy

You’ve survived holidays filled with burnt turkeys, embarrassing home videos, Jell-O pudding fights and drunken half-naked relatives playing Twister . This time, bring your own distraction. Won’t Christmas be even more fun when you show up with your new psychic pet ostrich at the door?

Does holiday stress have you frazzled? Don't miss our stress-less holiday guide >>

Get a hotel

Sure, the whole family might be coming to spend the week at your house, but it’s totally okay to get a hotel! Trust me. It will be that much easier to handle your passive aggressive Aunt Rita when she accuses you of running a hippie commune because you co-sleep with your children if you know that you’ll be relaxing in your own private Jacuzzi in just a few short hours. Family holidays are important, but sanity is even better.

Russell Simmons giving cash to All-American Muslim

Russell Simmons is trying to counteract the negativity over TLC's All-American Muslim by buying up ad space on the show.

Russell Simmons buying ad space on All-American Muslim

Russell Simmons is ready to put his money where his mouth is when it comes to TLC's controversial reality show All-American Muslim. The hip hop mogul tried to buy out ad space for the hit show after home improvement store Lowe's pulled their ads late last week

"Just purchased remaining spots for [All-American Muslim] for next week," the 52-year-old Occupy Wall Street supporter tweeted on Tuesday. "The show is now sold out! Keep your money and we will keep ours."

Simmons was referring to a planned boycott of the superstore after company officials called the show "propaganda" for Muslims. He wanted to advertise his pre-paid Rush Card during the show, but was later told the remaining ad inventory was already sold out.

"I'm trying to buy ads during [All-American Muslim] airing this Sunday, but now they are saying they are sold out. I will keep trying..."

In a statement, Lowe's argued that "[The show is] clearly designed to counter legitimate and present-day concerns about many Muslims… clearly this program is attempting to manipulate Americans into ignoring the threat of jihad and to influence them to believe that being concerned about the jihad threat would somehow victimize these nice people in the show."

Their decision came after a Christian group, Florida Family Association, objected to the show's showcase of five Muslim families living in the U.S.

"Lowe's made the decision to discontinue our advertising on Dec. 5. As we shared yesterday, we have a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, and we're proud of that longstanding commitment. If we have made anyone question that commitment, we apologize," the company said in a non-apology on Monday, adding that several companies pulled their ads.

Hmmm… something isn't adding up here, Lowe's. We're with Uncle Rush on this: Showing positive diversity on television is always a good thing.

Kendall and Kylie Jenner are joining the family business -- in more ways than one. In addition to their own reality show, the teens are launching their own jewelry line.

Kendall Jenner Kylie Jenner

If you thought that the Kardashian empire had to wind down eventually, you thought wrong.

We recently reported that more Kardashian reality shows are in the works -- and now the near-youngest of the brood, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, are expanding the family's empire with their own jewelry line.

The teens have inked a deal with Glamhouse to design a reasonably priced jewelry line aimed at girls  ages 12-19.

"For a long time, I've looked to expand the Glamhouse brand portfolio with a younger, more affordable line," explained Glamhouse founder and president Pascal Mouawad. "With their popular show on E! Entertainment Television, millions of teenagers look to Kendall and Kylie for style advice, so they were truly a perfect fit for the company and I'm thrilled to partner with them."

Kendall and Kylie are super-psyched for their new endeavor, "We love accessories, and it's amazing that we're going to have our own line to be able to wear everyday -- and for our friends to wear, too!" they said.

This isn't the first celebrity line carried by Glamhouse. The firm also handles House of Harlow by Nicole Richie, Belle Noel by Kendall and Kylie's big sis Kim Kardashian and Low Luv by Erin Wasson.

"Glamhouse is a destination for fashion jewelry and accessories designed by celebrities, stylists and famous designers," reads a company statement. "As the fourth generation jeweler of the prestigious Mouawad diamond house, Pascal has long cultivated strong connections with the glamorous world of Hollywood. Through Glamhouse, Pascal builds on his relationships with artists and celebrities, giving them the creative freedom to design fashion jewelry collections under their own label while receiving his guidance and expertise."

Kendall Jenner, 16, is a fashion model whose latest shoot for Lovecat magazine raised eyebrows for being quite risqué for the young teen. Kylie Jenner, 14, also models. The sisters were named Style Stars of 2011 by Seventeen Magazine.

Scarlett Johansson won't stop talking about nude photos

Scarlett Johansson still has a good attitude about her leaked nude photos, but admits that the whole thing was really creepy.

Scarlett Johansson talks about nude photos, again

Scarlett Johansson looks incredibly good naked… and she won't let us forget it! The We Bought a Zoo star stopped by the Late Show With David Letterman to promote the film and discuss all things nudity.

"Somebody stole my nudie photos. They were out there for all the world to see which was, uh, unfortunate, really," she joked to Letterman. Naturally, the late night host was really sympathetic to her plight.

"[The photos are] a lovely thing for mankind," he joked to Johansson.

All kidding aside, the actress said it was scary that someone was constantly trying to get access to the most personal parts of her public life.

"It meant the guy was there constantly, every 20 seconds, sitting there all pasty and sweaty and pervy and weird. And that's the creepiest thing, really," she said, adding that she's "lame" with technology.

Matt Damon talks bear scare at We Bought a Zoo premiere >>

Of course, the actress also talked about her marriage to the recipient of her nude photos, Ryan Reynolds, during another Monday appearance on NBC's Today Show. Johansson said she threw herself into work when the marriage ended.

"There's a community on film sets and in this industry," she revealed. "It would seem kind of cut-throat, but for me, I've been in the industry for 20 years and it has that familial kind of feel."

"When I'm working, I can't focus on anything but the job at hand, and I think that's some kind of therapy."

We love her sense of humor, but we wanted her to answer our most burning question: What does she really think of Reynolds' hot-and-heavy relationship with Blake Lively?

Woman eating brains

Get your gag reflexes ready

Just when you thought your after dinner TV session was safe, Fear Factor returns after a five year hiatus. It is perfect timing really; watch just half of the grotesque show and your New Year’s diet resolution will be easier to keep than ever before. This season promises to be grosser and more intense than it was the first time around.

As if jumping out of a helicopter or dangling from a car suspended high above the earth wasn’t enough, contestants have to prove their courage by eating items that most animals wouldn’t even touch, even if they were starving. The menu in the past has included items like horse rectum, pig liver, tarantulas and earthworms. Most people would gag just thinking about eating any of that, but it is about to get a whole lot worse.

More than just gross

Call it an attempt to boost NBC’s dismal ratings or perhaps to just bring back a show that fans loved, but either way, the Fear Factor creators are hard at work to ensure that the new season tops all the gross challenges on the first run of the show. Last night’s show included a challenge where contestants had to eat live scorpions. In an interview with the NY Times, contestant Anthony Bell said, "I was totally caught off guard," by the intensity of the challenges. "I physically wanted to cry," he said.

The format will be much like it was before including a physical stunt, gross-out stunt and a grand finale. Although calling stunts like diving into a 3,000 gallon tank of cow blood to retrieve cow hearts with your mouth simply a gross-out stunt may just be the biggest understatement of the year. The show will require contestants to be bigger and braver than ever before if they want to win the $50,000 prize but clearly viewers will have to be held to the same standard.

Have your barf bag ready

In 2005, a viewer attempted to sue the show for causing him to vomit and injure himself after watching an episode. Much like the contestants that can’t handle the challenges, he didn’t win any large sums of money and the case was thrown out. Watch at your own risk and be prepared to heave. The new season airs Monday nights on NBC at 9/8c.

Meryl Streep is one hot Vogue cover girl

The Iron Lady actress Meryl Streep continues to put younger actresses to shame with her January Vogue cover.

Meryl Streep is the new Vogue cover girl

Who says all the cover girls are in their twenties? Certainly not Meryl Streep — she's strutting her stuff on the January cover of Vogue!

"I was joking with the ladies earlier," she said during the interview. "And I told them I was probably the oldest person ever to be on the cover of Vogue."

She's right: The Iron Lady actress, 62, is the oldest woman to appear on the fashion bible's cover — a feat she never would have imagined as a 40-year-old actress. "I remember turning to my husband and saying, 'Well, what should we do? Because it's over,'" Streep said of turning 40. At that time, the only roles she received offers for were as witches.

"Once women passed childbearing age they could only be seen as grotesque on some level," she added. It all changed when she starred opposite Clint Eastwood in the 1995 romance The Bridges of Madison County.

"The audience that were my girls, that I knew they’d get it if we could get the movie made," she remembered of Bridges and other films that star "women whose usefulness had passed."

Streep put that notion to bed completely with her incredible turns in films like The Devil Wears PradaMama Mia! And It's Complicated.

"[I]n the period of Silkwood, [it] could never have been made, with a 60-year-old actress deciding between her ex-husband and another man. With a 40-year-old actress it would never have been made," Streep said of the film that co-starred Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. Now, she's starring as one of Britain's most powerful women of all time, Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Not too shabby!

Go on, Meryl! We'll keep watching your movies — and buying your mag covers — no matter what your age.

Disgusting stunts earn Fear Factor solid ratings

Fear Factor returned Monday night, proving gross and disgusting can win ratings with the best of them.

It's been six years since Joe Rogan teased and taunted the contestants of Fear Factor with disgusting stunts that involved tarantulas and rats. He returned as host Monday night, to show a sleeping dragon can be woken to nab solid ratings.

Were you hoping to see contestants dive for cow hearts in a blood-filled tank on the premiere of the new Fear Factor? Come on, this is Fear Factor, of course you did and they delivered just that.

Contestants had to dive into a tank filled with cow blood, grab cow hearts and pass them to their partner's mouth!

Yuck! But that's the name of the game.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Fear Factor, which ran as two separate hours, debuted to strong ratings, matching NBC's best "non-sports number in the 8:00 p.m. spot since February of 2008."

Not a bad start for a show that gives fans goose bumps.

The challenges are only going to get messier and creepier. To bring the show out of retirement, Executive Producer Matt Kunitz knew what had to be done. "In the past we would have covered someone with 100,000 bees. Now we'll cover one of them in 200,000 bees."

Kunitz added, "Their partner, in order to get the bees off of them, has to eat 20 live bees, then retrieve an ax to cut his partner down,” he said.

Host Joe Rogan also offered his own take on the new Fear Factor to AOL recently: "It is bigger and crazier than it ever was before, so if people enjoyed the old show, this one's gonna be nuts. It's truly over the top."

That, our loyal viewers and readers, is what you have to look forward to.

Christmas is the perfect time to teach kids about budgeting. Whether you're shopping with a preschooler or a teen, make gift buying a chance to learn about money management.

mom and daughter holiday shopping

Kids love being involved in holiday preparations. This year, in addition to baking and decorating with your kids, make shopping part of the family routine. Take this as an opportunity to talk about money management and the ways gifts fit in with your family’s traditions. When you focus on shopping for loved ones, your kids won’t notice the subtle budget lessons and math practice.

Talk about shopping first

While you want to teach money management, you don’t want to focus too much on money during the holidays. Before you begin shopping for holiday gifts with your child, talk about the tradition of giving gifts and what it means in your family. Emphasize the spirit of giving and de-emphasize the commercialism of the holiday. Ideally, your children should learn that it’s truly the thought that counts. Even teens can spend time creating homemade gifts in addition to shopping for presents at the mall or online.

Teach age appropriate lessons

Preschoolers won’t be able to grasp the full concepts of money management and budgeting, while teens may already have bank accounts and check cards. Tailor your holiday budgeting lessons to your kid’s age. For example, let younger children see you paying with cash so they can understand that a transaction is going on. When teaching older children, take time to sit down and go over your shopping budget on paper or on a spreadsheet. Encourage young children and teens to save throughout the year.

Talk about advertising and comparison shopping

Kids love browsing big toy catalogues during the holiday season. Next time your child eyes a toy in a catalogue or sees a commercial on television, talk about advertising in an age appropriate way. Discuss using advertising as a way to find the best prices, as opposed to letting advertising dictate what you decide to purchase. Make a game out of comparison shopping for the best deals. The goal is to empower your children as shoppers and encourage them to notice the persuasive nature of advertising.

Discover tips for kids' checking & savings accounts >>

Give kids a shopping allowance

When shopping, kids practice math skills and decision-making skills. Try giving elementary school kids a modest shopping allowance in small bills. Visit a discount store where kids can pick small gifts for family members. Give your child as much freedom as possible, only stepping in to answer questions. Older kids and teens can online with your guidance. Remind kids of hidden expenses like postage and wrapping. Encourage older kids to track spending carefully and the habit just might carry into the New Year.

Lamar Odom on Mavericks trade: "It was emotional"

Lamar Odom is finally happy about his move to the Dallas Mavericks. How is wife Khloe Kardashian helping him settle in?

Lamar Odom excited about trade to Dallas

Khloe Kardashian is already the favorite Kardashian among the Dallas Mavericks, according to owner Mark Cuban.

"You know, we had a 'team' meeting, and we all decided that Khloe is the official favorite Kardashian of the Dallas Mavericks," the outspoken owner told Extra. "She's welcome with open arms. We can't wait to have the whole family, can't wait to have Khloe and Lamar."

The couple's excitement to pack their bags and move south wasn't always the case, though: Lamar Odom revealed that the trade was "emotional" for him and his famous wife.

"It's a good thing, it's a good thing," he told sports radio host Dan Patrick when asked about the surprise weekend trade. "I'm looking forward to it."

He added that it was time to move on from the Lakers after team management tried to trade him in a deal for baller Chris Paul.

"That's when I figured out that it could happen at any given time, they were gonna trade me this year no matter what. They were trying to make the best business move for themselves, which wasn't in my best interest, so I had to take control of the situation and land in a place… like Dallas, like Mark Cuban and a team like the Mavericks, it was my first choice."

Odom added that Kardashian is already getting ready to make their Dallas hotel into a little home, most likely for reality cameras.

"It is reality," he said of their lives. "On the show, our lives totally unfold, like right there on the spot."

So, will it be awkward when he has to play against his former brother-in-law, Kris Humphries? "It'll be weird, man… I gotta go out there and have a job to do."

Do you think Lamar Odom's move to Dallas will be positive for the reality couple?

Angelina Jolie: Brad Pitt is "the love of my life"

Angelina Jolie calls Brad Pitt the love of her life, but he's something else she considers even more important. Read on to find out what -- and how her new movie made her reconsider what love means.

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie has had many lovers -- some you've read about in the press, some she'll probably never speak of -- but the superstar says one man outshines them all.

In a new interview with Marie Claire, Jolie says Brad Pitt is the love of her life -- but that he has become so much more than that.

Angelina Jolie was a prude about nude scenes >>

"[Brad] has expanded my life in ways I never imagined," Jolie reveals in the January issue of the magazine. "We built a family. He is not just the love my life, he is my family. I hold that very dear. I suppose what I've learned from Brad is to be able to have the kind of family whose happiness and well-being comes before your own. I'm very, very grateful to have such a loving family, and I wouldn't have that without him."

Angelina Jolie's bad girl side belongs to Brad Pitt >>

In fact, she says they are so in love with each other and their family that they might even expand it in the future! "Nothing planned at the moment, but we just don't know," Jolie said. "I could end up pregnant."

Jolie also says her directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey made her think about how far she would go for love.

"I obviously put myself in the position of what would have happened if I were in this situation," she said. "If I were in love with somebody and we happened to be from separate sides of the conflict but we were in love before the conflict started, how far would I be able to go? How much could I be open to, and when would I start to close off? Is it love, or is it survival?"

Check out more of Jolie's interview on MarieClaire.com, and read the full chat in the January issue available Dec. 20.

Charlize Theron reveals her craziest co-star ever

After almost 20 years in Hollywood, Charlize Theron has finally met her match. In her latest film Young Adult, the Oscar-winner butted heads with a pint-sized actor who drove her absolutely insane!

Charlize Theron

In the new dramedy Young Adult, Charlize Theron went head-to-head with her toughest co-star -- a dog. In the film, she shares most of her scenes with a tiny Pomeranian, who plays her only friend and traveling companion.

Young Adult centers on Mavis, a recently divorced writer who returns to her small hometown looking for love. She plans to reunite with her former flame Buddy Slade , but two obstacles stand in her way -- his wife and child. Armed with her trusted dog and an oblivious attitude, Mavis prepares for the fight of her life.

Monday night, Theron appeared on NBC's The Tonight Show where she discussed the film and her canine co-star. She revealed that the dog cast in Young Adult isn't a professional. It's actually someone's pet that was plucked from obscurity and placed in the movie.

The actress explained, "Jason Reitman, the director, saw this dog on the street and went 'That's Mavis' dog!'" He then approached its owner and asked, "Do you want your dog to be in a movie?'" Obviously, they agreed and the rest is cinematic history.

When it came to shooting, Theron's new scene partner had a hard time following directions. She said, "You couldn't get it to focus for like two seconds. It was insane. It really was the perfect dog for Mavis but it was driving Charlize crazy."

If you don't believe her, Theron brought a few outtakes from the film that expose the dog's onset antics.

Young Adult is currently playing in limited release and expands nationwide Dec. 16.

Plan a romantic holiday date for him

Save your man the trouble of planning your big holiday date and do the planning yourself this year. He'll be so happy to escape that stress that you may not need to get him anything else for Christmas. No matter your budget, schedule or location, you shouldn't have any trouble finding an activity you'll both enjoy.

Couple on romantic sleigh ride

Take in the sights

Get out and enjoy the holiday sights together. Go for a walk through your neighborhood to see the Christmas decorations or visit a local lights display. Bundle up for the cold, but not too much; the chilly weather gives you a perfect excuse to snuggle. If you two aren’t the cold-weather type, stop for hot chocolate, turn on some holiday tunes and enjoy the view from your car.

Take a Christmas lights drive >>

Get physical

There’s nothing like shared physical activity to bring you closer together. Show him your athletic side by taking him sledding or ice skating -- or just start a simple snowball fight. Not the athletic type? That doesn’t matter. These types of activities are probably right down his alley, and he won’t mind helping you get the hang of it. In fact, a few spills in the snow may be just what you need to break the ice and get the evening started off right.

Romantic ways to enjoy the cold weather >>

Get away

The hustle and bustle of the holiday season can make it hard to find time for your special someone -- frustrating, because it’s a time meant to spend with those who mean the most to you. Instead of planning an evening, plan an entire weekend. Book a room at a bed-and-breakfast and dedicate an entire weekend to celebrating both the season and each other. Once you're there, you can get out and take part in touristy activities, or stay in your room the entire weekend. It doesn't matter what you do, as long as you do it together.

Boutique hotels in your city >>

Get dolled up

Whether you're going to dinner at a swanky restaurant or out for a game of pool at the local dive bar, go all out when getting dressed for the evening, and ask your man to do the same. The idea may not seem appealing to him at first, but once he takes a look at you, it’ll all be worth it. You’ll both feel great about yourselves, especially if you’re normally a more casual couple, and that confidence will improve your moods all night. Plus, staring at your hot date all night will make it tough to keep your hands off of each other.

Flo Rida escapes jail in DUI case

Flo Rida won't serve jail time for driving while intoxicated. The star's been ordered to complete a first time offenders program as part of a plea deal stemming from his highly publicized DUI bust.

Flo Rida just dodged a stint in the Dade County Jail.

Staying out of a jail? Pretty impressive for a rapper.  Take notes, T.I.!

Flo, as you may recall, was arrested on DUI charges in Miami Beach last June.

The "Low" emcee, 31, was pulled over in his $1.7 million red and black Bugatti shortly after 4 a.m. on the morning of June 9, police spokeswoman Deborah Doty told The Miami Herald. Flo, whose real name is Tramar Dillard, was taken into custody after cops noticed his car swerving on the expressway.

Word on the curb has it that Flo's blood alcohol level was .185, more than double the .08 legal limit, at the time of his arrest. He was cuffed, Mirandized and charged with driving under the influence and driving with a suspended driver's license.

But thanks to some fancy footwork on the part of his legal team, the lyricist won't spend a single night behind bars.

He's been sentenced to a first-time offenders program in lieu of jail time, TMZ has learned. It's all a part of the state's "Back on Track" program.

Per the terms of his deal, Flo must obtain a certificate of completion in substance abuse classes, attend counseling, complete community service and submit to random drug testing in order to hold up his end of the deal. If the hip-hopster completes all program requirements, prosecutors will knock the DUI charge down to reckless driving.

Do you think Flo Rida got off with a slap on his very iced-out wrist? Has the legal system become too lax in prosecuting revelers who drink and drive?

Sound off in the Comments section!

Amy Winehouse biopic: Dad says, No, No, No

Amy at the box office? Not if her dad has his way! Rumors of an Amy Winehouse movie have been shot down by the famed singer's father.

Music aficionados waiting for Amy Winehouse's famed beehive to make its way to the big screen shouldn't hold their breath.

According to the late songstress' bereaved dad Mitch Winehouse, a biopic based on the life of the Frank hitmaker just "ain't happenin'."

Ever.

"It would hardly be a biopic without the music and we'd never allow the songs to be released," Mitch, who owns the rights to all of Amy's music, told Britain's Daily Mail Tuesday.

Oy! That'll likely be crushing news for television suits -- who we hear are eager to get the jump on a TV biopic about Winehouse's tragic life story.

The singer's sultry vocal talents were often overshadowed by her addiction to drugs and alcohol. Winehouse, 27, was found dead in her North London home on July 23.

Toxicology tests released in October determined the singer died of acute alcohol poisoning.

Last month, reports surfaced that small screen producers were considering actresses to portray Winehouse in the made-for-TV flick and had already begun the hunt for investors.

"The feeling is there wouldn't be an actress under 30 who wouldn't want to play her," an informant, who asked not to be identified, told The Sun.

"The first job is to get financial backing from co-production companies in the U.S. Some are showing interest because it's a sure-fire money-spinner. They know anything Amy-related is going to be a huge success."

Additionally, the Interwebs remain abuzz over whispers of an alleged big screen adaptation of Winehouse's life that could see Lady Gaga ditching the meat dress and donning a beehive to play the "Valerie" star.

Amy Winehouse Foundation helps its first kids >>

Recent reports claimed that Amy’s ex-boyfriend, Reg Traviss, had been approached about possibly producing that film.

Not if Mitch has anything to say about it.

Instead of a film, the former cabbie is penning a memoir about life with his famous daughter. It Books, an imprint of HarperCollins, has purchased the rights to the tome, titled Amy, My Daughter.

Look for it on booksellers' shelves in 2012.

All proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit The Amy Winehouse Foundation, which supports charitable activities that offer support to youth.

Amy Winehouse's father doesn't blame former lover for her death >>

Amy's posthumous album, Lioness, is currently No. 1 in her native Britain.

Jessica Alba: Motherhood is "overwhelming"

Jessica Alba says the responsibilities of motherhood are "overwhelming" -- but she wouldn't have it any other way. Read on to see what this star has to say about her two girls!

Jessica Alba

As a working mother of two, Jessica Alba probably has a lot more in common with many women than we realize. She too has trouble balancing her busy schedule, struggles to keep in shape and finds there is not enough time in the day to do everything she wants, just like you.

Alba sat down with InStyle Australia to talk about what it's like to be a mom of two in Hollywood -- and it's not all that different from anywhere else.

"It's overwhelming," she told the magazine. "I don't consider myself a lot of the time. I think a lot of mums do that, try to be everything to everyone all the time. I make mistakes. I do try to do way too much."

Jessica Alba talks pregnancy woes >>

Alba says motherhood changed her in ways she never anticipated. "I really came into myself as a person," she said.

"Before, I was always working for my identity. And then you take the focus off of yourself. I was probably -- definitely -- a bit of a narcissist. When you are young and an actor and driven, it's a bizarre state of mind to be in at times. I was so focused on things that didn't matter at the end of the day. Now I have what I do for a living in perspective. Working was everything to me, my entire identity, and once I got to step away from it, everything changed."

The second time around is easier for this veteran mom, she says, "I'm more relaxed. Every sneeze or runny nose or little bump on the head that would have freaked me out before… I am more easygoing with that sort of thing. And the sense of knowing that I can get Haven to stop crying. It was all new with Honor and I wasn't confident, and she could feel that so she continued to cry. That didn't happen a lot, but when it happened I felt like I would crack."

In addition to running after Honor Marie, three, and four-month-old Haven Garner, Alba is busy launching a new eco-products line called The Honest Company.
