Etta James is fighting a losing battle. It's been confirmed that the singer is currently in the final stages of cancer. James is surrounded by family and friends, who are making her last days as comfortable as possible.

Etta JamesLegendary songstress Etta James is terminally ill. The woman who brought us bluesy tunes like "At Last" and "Tell Mama" is suffering from cancer. Her manager Lupe De Leon confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the singer's health is fading fast.

“Etta has a terminal illness. She’s in the final stages of leukemia," said De Leon. "She has also been diagnosed with dementia and Hepatitis C. She’s in a home right now and mostly sleeps."

De Leon also revealed that James is receiving treatment from several physicians. "She is under the care of a live-in doctor from Riverside Community Hospital and two others who have placed her on oxygen. Her husband is with her 24 hours a day, and her sons visit regularly. We’re all very sad. We’re just waiting.”

Many of James' fans knew she was sick, but had no idea how bad. Despite her condition, she still managed to put out a new album last November called The Dreamer. Prior to its release, she confirmed that it would be her final one.

After decades in the music business, James experienced a surge in popularity after Beyonce Knowles portrayed her in the 2008 biopic Cadillac Records. For the soundtrack, Knowles remade her classic "At Last," which sparked new interest in the original. The song was so big that President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama danced to at his 2009 inaugural celebration.

Over the course of her career, Etta James has released 28 studio albums, three live albums, six compilations and an astounding 58 singles. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001.

Candace Cameron Bure

How she does it

Yes, she’s that actress -- the one who played DJ Tanner on the hit '80s and '90s series Full House. But Candace Cameron Bure just happens to be a New York Times bestselling author , wife and mother to three children ages 13, 11 and 9, too.

Here, Bure talks about the simple but super smart principle that helps her balance the demands of her career with her family’s needs -- and what drew her to her latest movie, The Heart of Christmas .

SheKnows: You’re on the ABC Family show Make It or Break It, and now you have a new movie. How do you choose your projects?

Cameron Bure: It comes down to my family and my faith as a Christian: Any work I do has to be purposeful, inspiring, family friendly and uplifting. Although sometimes, I choose things that are just plain fun!

SheKnows: You act, you write and you even just launched a website. You’ve got your hands full! How do you balance it all?

Candace Cameron Bure and family

Cameron Bure: What I come back to is this question: At the end of the day, what really matters to me? The answer is always my family. Yes, I want to be a woman of my word and honor my commitments, but when I’m stressed out and on multiple deadlines and I know something’s gotta give, it’s more important for me to love and feed my kids, for example, than to answer one more email. I try to give myself the grace to not do everything perfectly, and remind myself that I am not a failure if I cancel a meeting or decide to turn down a project.

SheKnows: On your website, you write, “Modern women in the trenches of motherhood can feel isolated at times.”

Cameron Bure: Yes! Women are so busy, and our friends are often the first thing to get slashed from the to-do list. But it is so important to get out of the house -- even for 30 minutes -- and spend time with people who make you feel good. It’s okay to ask for support from your husband and others so you can take care of yourself! I always remind myself that I’ll be a better mom if I do.

SheKnows: The Heart of Christmas is based on the true story of Dax Locke, a 2-year-old whose battle with Leukemia inspired thousands to support him and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. What drew you to this movie?

Cameron Bure: I’m a sucker for anything that will make me cry. When I read this script, I thought it was sad but so sweet the way Dax Locke’s community rallied around him to give him one last Christmas. It’s something you’d hope all of us would do if presented with the opportunity. In my own life, I support several nonprofits, including Compassion International, because like many Americans, my family is blessed and I want to give as much as I can. I truly believe helping others is what life is all about, and The Heart of Christmas is the perfect example of this.

The Heart of Christmas re-airs on Dec. 18 at 9 a.m. and Dec. 22 at 9 p.m. You can also see Candace on Mommalogues beginning in January, where she'll be our very own featured celeb Mommaloguer.

A Filipino twist on the classic Mexican dish

They're commonly served during big festivals or family parties. If you grew up eating tamales, it will surely bring back many wonderful Christmas memories. The mixture is amazingly sweet and savory and a tasty alternative to the Mexican version.

You can add in many different fillings, so be creative and experiment with your tamales. Feel free to include chorizo sausage or cubed pork loin, and for vegetarian tamales, use some vegetables like garlic, onions and bell peppers.

Filipino Christmas tamale recipe

Yields 12-16

Ingredients:

  • 12-16 banana leaves blanched in hot water or aluminum foil, 10 x 12-inch pieces
  • 3-1/2 cups uncooked rice
  • 6 cups coconut milk
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 boneless and skinless cooked chicken breasts, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1 pound cooked shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup cooked ham, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1 cup roasted peanuts, coarsely crushed
  • 3 hard-boiled eggs, sliced
  • Sriracha sauce for optional garnish

Directions:

  1. In a large pot, mix together rice, coconut milk, brown sugar, salt and pepper.
  2. Cook mixture on low heat for 25 minutes, stirring constantly so the rice doesn’t stick to the pot.
  3. Mix in the peanuts and cook for another eight to 10 minutes, stirring constantly.
  4. On a banana leaf, place about a quarter cup of the rice mixture forming a 3-inch square shape and top with chicken, shrimp, ham and sliced eggs. Then top with another quarter cup of rice mixture and wrap the banana leaf in the form of a square and tie securely with kitchen string. Continue this step to fill the rest of your banana leaves.
  5. Place tamales in a deep steamer. Cover and cook for up to two hours. If you don’t have a steamer, arrange tamales in a deep pot and cover with water. Boil for about 30 minutes. Serve with sriracha sauce .

Denise Richards is gearing up for her first Christmas with three daughters in the house! Here comes Santa Claus -- and Charlie Sheen.

Denise RichardsDenise Richards is sharing her holiday plans with the world on her new site, DeniseRichards.com. There's much to celebrate for the actress, who will unwrap presents on the big day with her three daughters and ex-husband Charlie Sheen.

"The kids and I track Santa online to see where he is and when he will be at our house," the actress said, adding that her girls still believe in the jolly old fellow. "They’ve heard otherwise, but I’ve reassured them he exists. We set out cookies and milk and carrots for the reindeer."

Santa isn't the only person paying a visit to the home that "looks like Candy Land at Christmas."

"I do see Charlie over the holidays," she explained. "He's my family." Though they divorced in 2006, the pair share parenting duties of daughters Sam and Lola. "I think it's best to stay friendly whether it’s the holidays or not," she added. "Keep it about the kids and keep the peace."

Denise Richards went on to say, "[We spend] Christmas morning opening presents with the kids. Then Christmas dinner at our house -- this year it will be all of us. Many of my friends can't get home, they come for dinner as well."

Speaking of adopted daughter Eloise Joni, named after the 40-year-old's late mother Joni, Denise gushed, "I can’t wait for her first picture with Santa!" The family also honors the girls' grandmother by baking. Denise explained, "I make the chocolate no-bake cookies my mom always made."

Beyond Christmas it's all about getting in tip-top shape! Though not making an official New Year's resolution Denise Richards said, "If I did, it would be to be consistent with my fitness routine. I really dropped that ball this year. No more excuses!"

Piers Morgan: Howard Stern is perfect for AGT

Piers Morgan and Howard Stern traded compliments and concerns about Stern's new judging role on America's Got Talent.

Howard Stern talks America's Got Talent with Piers Morgan

Former America's Got Talent judge Piers Morgan couldn't be happier that shock jock Howard Stern is taking his place on the hit NBC show.

"Congrats to @HowardStern on landing my #AmericasGotTalent judging gig -- he'll be outrageous, hilarious, dangerous & brilliant. Can't wait," Morgan tweeted after the $20 million deal went public earlier this week.

Morgan continued that praise with Stern's Thursday night appearance on his CNN show, Piers Morgan Tonight.

Stern is more concerned with winning over the audience, saying that parenting groups are worried that he's "some sort of weird pervert who's going to convert America into some kind of zombie sex fiends."

"But I can assure you and the rest of America what I'm looking at here is to be a very good judge," Stern said. "To sit there, I take it seriously, you know I watched the show."

He also said he'll tap into his fatherly instincts to judge people on America's Got Talent

"If you're going to put your children on television to be judged, which by the way, I don't know that I would ever do that with my children," Stern said. "I raised three daughters and I don't think that that would be appropriate. But there are parents out there who think it's a good idea. And you got to be damn sure that this is a wise decision before you do it, because not only are you putting a kid out there, to be judged, but — you know, if a kid really does have talent, you do need time to nurture that talent, develop that talent."

The SiriusXM radio star is also a fan of the show — and it made the decision to sign on an easy one.

"I love this type of television. And the idea that they're coming to me I think first got started because I've had a rather long and lustrous radio career," he said.

"Whatever you think of me, I'm honest and I'll give you an honest opinion," he added. "And my — and really my goal is to find real talent and to actually find someone who can become a major superstar."

We can't wait to find out.

Planning a menu for a holiday party is no easy feat, especially when catering to vegan family and friends. However, meatless meal planning doesn't have to be hard and you certainly don't have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to creating your entrees and sides. Simple swaps, like soy milk for regular, vegan cheese for cheddar, and Tofurky for red meat can turn any meal into a vegan one! Plus, with such decadent dishes like shepherd's pie and rich cranberry cheesecake, people won't miss the heaviness that accompanies meat and cheese!

Share the joys of healthy food and healthy living with your family and friends by introducing them to these incredibly delicious vegan recipes. If you are eager to reinvent some of your favorite holiday dishes, like green bean casserole or cheesecake, just swap out the dairy ingredients with soy or coconut milk.

Tofurky stuffing bites

One of the easiest and most delicious holiday dishes to prepare is stuffing. However, to change things up a bit this year, I decided to turn this side into a bite-size appetizer! The great thing about these stuffing bites is that they can be made with both vegan and non-vegan ingredients and the taste is the same -- amazing!

  2. Place about one tablespoon of stuffing into each shell. Top with chopped sausage and basil leaves. Garnish with salt and pepper and enjoy!

Greek roasted potatoes

These seasoned potatoes are the biggest hit around our house. Every time we make a batch, the whole thing is gone in less than 20 minutes. Crispy spiced duck

Duck is a great dish to serve during the holiday season. This recipe is a twist on the French classic, Duck a l’Orange. If you've had duck at fancy restaurants before, cooking it yourself is an entirely different experience and you begin to realize how simple it is!

A delicious way to serve duck for the holidays!

The recipe is fairly easy to follow making it great for those who haven't previously cooked duck. You will love the combination of spices along with the orange sauce. The flavors complement each other perfectly.

Serving duck is a wonderful alternative to your traditional Christmas fare. The duck breast is seasoned with salt and then the skin is crusted with ginger, cumin, chili and star anise. This spice mixture amps up the earthy poultry flavor and creates a wonderful crispy skin when seared in the pan. It is complemented by an orange sauce made by deglazing the pan drippings with shallots, agave syrup , orange and lemon juice. Serve with a healthy side of vegetables and a nice bottle of pinot noir.

Spiced duck breast with an orange glaze sauce

Serves 2-4

Ingredients:

  • 2 boneless duck breasts
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground star anise
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil, or canola
  • 2 shallots, thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons agave syrup, or honey
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil, or butter
  • Salt, to taste

Directions:

  1. On both sides of the duck breast, season with salt; then add cumin, star anise, coriander, ginger, white pepper and chili powder to the skin side.
  2. Add coconut oil to a large pan over medium heat. In the pan, place the duck breasts skin side down. Lower the heat to medium-low and cook until the skin is crisp and golden brown, for about 12-15 minutes. Flip the duck breasts and cook for about three to four minutes, until medium-rare. Transfer to the cutting board to rest.
  3. Raise heat to medium, and then add sliced shallots and cook until soft. Add agave syrup, lemon juice and orange juice and allow liquid to reduce. To finish the sauce, whisk in the butter or coconut oil. Season with salt.

Rodney Atkins' divorce is right out of a country song

Country superstar Rodney Atkins is getting a divorce after a violent he said/she said fight with his wife, Tammy Atkins.

Rodney Atkins files for divorce after domestic violence arrest

Country singer Rodney Atkins doesn't need to look far for songwriting inspiration. The popular singer has filed for divorce from his wife of 13 years, Tammy Atkins, after a November fight turned violent.

Court documents show that Atkins was arrested on Nov. 21 and jailed on $2,500 bond after a booze-fueled fight with his wife. Tammy alleged that her husband threw her down a hallway and attempted to suffocate her with a pillow — all within their 10-year-old son's view.

"This was an unfortunate verbal dispute between Mr. and Mrs. Atkins within hearing range of their child, and when Mr. Atkins realized their child was in hearing range of the argument, his first priority became getting out of the earshot of the child," Rodney's lawyer, Rose Palermo, said in a statement. "That is when Mrs. Atkins called the police and gave them her version of the argument, which is completely untrue."

He filed for divorce on Wednesday, citing "irreconcilable differences," according to court documents obtained by TMZ. He also denies the domestic violence charges against him.

"Under Tennessee state law, anyone can swear out a warrant to the police and have a warrant issued to an arrest," Palermo said. "Obviously that is the case here, since according to the explicit terms of the warrant, it's entirely based on the word of Mrs. Atkins. The police did not witness any assault because none occurred. The police did not witness any violence between Mr. and Mrs. Atkins. It is entirely based on her word."

Atkins' lawyer was adamant that he's spent considerable amount of time with his son, Elijah, since the incident and is seeking custody.

"Since filing the complaint for divorce, he has exercised substantial parenting time with the parties' son and he will continue to do so while the divorce is pending. The criminal complaint does not allege that any harm came to the child or Mrs. Atkins and as a result the Court has not prohibited Mr. Atkins from having parenting time with his son," Palermo said.

Tammy also wants custody, along with child support and "equitable distribution" of the couple's growing wealth. Each side claims that the other is "guilty of such inappropriate marital conduct as renders further cohabitation unsafe and improper."

The divorce is a surprise to country fans. Tammy was featured in the video for Atkins' song "Farmer's Daughter." Now, they're both more likely to sing Tammy Wynette's "D-I-V-O-R-C-E."

Alyson Hannigan is pregnant -- just like her How I Met Your Mother character Lily!

Alyson Hannigan is pregnant! A rep has confirmed the How I Met Your Mother actress and husband Alexis Denisof are anxiously awaiting the arrival of a little brother or sister for their daughter Satyana.

Alyson Hannigan

Alyson Hannigan, pictured here with her husband and 2-year-old daughter shopping in Brentwood earlier this month, is in good company with her pregnancy -- her HIMYM character Lily is pregnant, too! While the public knows Lily and Marshall are expecting a boy, no word yet on if Alyson Hannigan is shopping for pink or blue baby clothes.

The actress and Alexis Denisof met during filming of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off, Angel. The pair exchanged vows on Oct. 11, 2003.

"Alyson is thrilled to be pregnant!" a source described as close to the 37-year-old star tells Us Weekly. "She's been wearing baggy clothes to cover the baby bump."

Of becoming a mother to Satyana, she shared previously, "[Being a mother] has changed me in every way because my life is so much greater. It filled a void I never knew was there -- it's the most amazing experience of my life. I just feel so blessed to get to be on this journey, to be a mommy. [Satyana] is just the greatest baby."

Earlier this year, Alyson Hannigan denied rumors she was pregnant, blaming her bumpy appearance on bad wardrobe choices and overindulgence in the food department.

"NO, I’m not pregnant!” she tweeted. "I just ate too much carnival food, that time of the month, hurt my back & couldn’t suck my gut in, & need 2 do cardio!"

Though she hasn't tweeted in response to her pregnancy news hitting the press, Alyson Hannigan did recently share on her official Twitter page a bit of young Satyana's humor: "My daughter: 'Mommy I have a really funny joke to tell you!' Me: 'Okay, what?' My daughter: 'Poop!'"

Best wishes to Alyson Hannigan for a happy and healthy pregnancy!

The Beach Boys are getting back together to celebrate 50 years of music. Read on to find out what sort of music they're readying for the road.

'Round, 'round, get around — they get around! The Beach Boys are back with a new album and tour, according to band members Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks.

The Beach Boys reuniting for tour

"This anniversary is special to me because I miss the boys," Wilson said in a statement. "It will be a thrill for me to make a new record and be on stage with them again."

The Beach Boys are recording a new album that includes a re-recorded version of their 1968 song "Do It Again." They're going back in the studio this month to record more songs. The release date for the new album is a secret, but it'll likely coincide with the tour.

The Bangles reunited for a new album and tour, too >>

"It sounded so good we just decided to continue," Jardine said. "There are some new things that Brian has come up with that are really remarkable. 'Do It Again' was done in an afternoon. These songs will take a little more putting our heads together."

The tour is set to kick off in New Orleans in late April with a special appearance at the Grammys in February.

"There will be a surprise at the Grammys," Jardine added to Rolling Stone. "We'll do something really exciting. There's a lot of interest in it, which is nice. It's going to be a very big operation."

Bruce Springsteen "incredibly excited" for 2012 tour >>

Differences broke up the legendary group, now the biggest selling band in SoundScan/Nielsen history. However, they're looking forward to getting back on the road together and revisiting the good ole days.

"We haven't played together in a long time," Love said. "The fans are going to want to hear the hits. But there should also be lesser-known ones that are so important."

There's one question they haven't answered, though: Will mega-fan John Stamos hit the road with The Beach Boys for a few dates? We hope so!

Tom Cruise is back on top! Thursday night, the actor's latest film Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol made its IMAX debut and pulled in some big numbers.

Tom Cruise: Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol PremiereMission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is giving Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked a run for their money. The newest sequel in the action franchise is making a huge splash at IMAX.

According to Deadline, early box office estimates report that Ghost Protocol has earned $1.1 million  from evening and midnight shows. The film debuted Thursday night at 425 theaters and somehow managed to match Mission: Impossible 3's midnight gross.

So, what's the big deal? In 2006, Mission: Impossible 3 also debuted with $1.1 million but on over 2000 screens! Ghost Protocol is playing at a  fraction of that.

Ghost Protocol's numbers can be attributed to several factors. The film's biggest asset is the inclusion of The Dark Knight Rises prologue. Warner Bros. partnered with Paramount to release the first six minutes of their Batman sequel with IMAX screenings of Mission: Impossible.

Dark Knight Rises prologue: Where to watch?  >>

It's no secret that The Dark Knight Rises and IMAX ticket prices are giving Ghost Protocol a box office boost. But the film itself isn't too shabby. It currently has a fresh rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and is being touted as the best Mission: Impossible yet. The film features Tom Cruise back in full force, performing most of his stunts and oozing charisma.

Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers wrote, "This is Cruise's show and the actor brings the role a startling athletic grace and becoming maturity. If someone asks you what a true movie star is, point to Cruise."

Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol is currently playing in select IMAX theaters and opens nationwide Dec. 21.

Will you be seeing the latest Mission Impossible this weekend?

Breastfeeding support: Common breastfeeding problems and solutions

Are you struggling to nurse your newborn? From mastitis to clogged ducts, learn helpful tips and solutions for some of the most common breastfeeding problems.

common breastfeeding problems

Mother’s milk is the perfect nourishment for infants. But breastfeeding challenges can throw a wrench into your nursing relationship. It’s not uncommon for mothers who experience breastfeeding problems to give up and switch to formula because they didn’t get the support they needed during a critical time.

Learn about some of the most common challenges and get the relief you need to get your breastfeeding relationship back on track.

Sore or cracked nipples

During the first few weeks of establishing breastfeeding, it is common to experience some discomfort as your body adjusts to nursing a hungry infant.

However, if your nipples are cracked, bleeding or developing blisters there may something more than adjustment discomfort. Oftentimes, these types of problems arise from improper latch or positioning. Make sure that your baby is suckling your entire areola and not just your nipple, as this will quickly cause soreness, cracking and even blisters.

For new moms, breastfeeding is a new sensation and may be a bit uncomfortable, but if you are feeling anything beyond mild discomfort, this is a sign that you need to adjust your latch or positioning. Many lactation consultants are happy to visit you in your home and help you get correctly positioned in your own environment. Oftentimes, a single appointment can make all the difference.

Check out 10 helpful breastfeeding tips from the World Health Organization >>

Thrush

Many babies develop thrush, which is nothing more than fungal overgrowth on the tongue. Unfortunately, this can easily transfer to mom’s nipples and can be very painful. If you are experiencing intense pain in your nipples during and after nursing that is not improved by better latch-on or positioning, visit your family doctor to check for thrush. Treatment is simple, but it is important to treat both mom and baby at the same time or you will continue to transfer the yeast infection back and forth.

Read more on natural solutions and treatments for thrush >>

Clogged ducts and mastitis

During the first few months of breastfeeding while your milk supply is being established, it is not uncommon for moms to experience engorgement and clogged milk ducts. If you notice a hard lump inside your breast that is tender to the touch, you may have a plugged duct. If you are also experiencing fever, body aches and other symptoms, it is possible that you have developed mastitis.

Plugged ducts may loosen on their own through regular feedings, but there are a variety of techniques to speed up the process:

  1. Gently massage the clog with your hands. Massage in the direction the milk flows toward the nipple.
  2. Use a rice sock to heat up your breast in between feedings. Heat is very useful for loosening clogs.
  3. Nurse your baby in a different position. If you can, position your baby’s chin in the area just beneath the clog. This may require a little gymnastic nursing on your part, but can be very effective as babies suckle the hardest on the area directly above their chin.
  4. Make sure to get plenty of rest. The strength of your immune system is directly related to your body’s ability to recover from clogged ducts and mastitis.

If you have done all of these techniques and you are still not feeling better, you may need to seek professional guidance from a lactation consultant or doctor.

Woman doing the Bar Method

It's time to get lean

If you're like me, you’re always looking for new fitness routines to try out because, let’s face it, the same old workout gets boring after a while, both for you and your muscles. With 2012 fast approaching, it’s time to make a New Year’s resolution, and when it comes to fitness, there’s nothing better than the Bar Method to whip your body into shape. Read on to find out why this workout is something you need to try -- regardless of your age, shape or fitness level.

Nothing kicks off the New Year like a brand-new sculpted body, so if you want one of your own, you’re going to have to work for it -- but that’s not a bad thing! Right now, I can’t get enough of the Bar Method, which will have you hooked after just one workout. With just more than 60 studios around the U.S. and Canada, the Bar Method is taking fitness as we know it by storm in a way that you’ve probably never tried before.

The Bar Method's website says it all. The workout creates a "uniquely lean, firm, sculpted body by combining the muscle-shaping principles of isometrics, the body-elongating practice of dance conditioning, the science of physical therapy and the intense pace of interval training into a powerful exercise format that quickly and safely reshapes and elongates muscles." The best part? The magic happens fast.

We caught up with Gina Williams and Melissa Ramsey, owners of The Bar Method in Bernardsville, New Jersey, to talk about rock-hard abs, lifted seats and a slimmer overall physique.

SheKnows: What inspired you to get involved with the Bar Method?

Gina and I have been passionate about exercise our entire lives. Six years ago we began taking an exercise class based on the Lotte Berk philosophy. We started out training daily for a full year; in January of 2009 the studio was opened and we began teaching immediately. The energy of the studio was amazing! The thought of helping women get stronger and more confident was so gratifying. We never saw an exercise method so targeted, so safe and so effective at re-shaping bodies. We knew almost immediately we wanted to spread the method to other communities nearby.

SheKnows: What sets the Bar Method apart from other “barre” workouts?

The Bar Method is different from other “barre” routines because ours is extremely effective and very safe for the body. Every exercise is developed by physical therapists so it is extremely targeted and is one that delivers results in a safe manner. The strengthening exercises are intense and the stretching that follows creates a long, lean, slim and tapered body.

SheKnows: Tell us why this workout isn’t a fad and what keeps it from getting old.

The Bar Method has been around for more than 10 years. The Lotte Berk method, which it was derived from, has been around for more than 30 years. It is a method that just keeps getting better and better over time.

SheKnows: Can people with injuries or those who are out of shape do the Bar Method?

Yes, absolutely. We have modifications for every exercise for people with various injuries. These modifications are again developed by physical therapists, so each is extremely safe and effective in sculpting, strengthening and stretching each muscle group. All fitness levels are welcome as well.

SheKnows: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone looking to start doing Bar Method workouts? Maybe someone who is too scared to get off the couch and try.

Bar Method is an exercise program that can be adapted for many people. It is a method that builds on itself and one that you can grow with as you become more experienced. Take each class one step at a time. Be patient, and it won’t be long before you’ll have long, lean thighs, firm abs and a lifted seat. You will find muscles you never knew you had before!

SheKnows: Tell me in a sentence or two why the Bar Method gets results.

The Bar Method is a revolutionary workout that quickly and safely reshapes your entire body. It integrates the fat-burning format of interval training and redefines your muscles, helping to create long, lean bodies. This one-hour class strengthens core muscles, improves flexibility and posture and leaves you yearning for more.

Bar Method classes and DVDs

Not near one of the Bar Method studios? Try one of their workout DVDs instead. At about $20, they won’t break the bank and will soon become your go-to workout for 2012.

If you’re curious how much the workout costs, we’re not going to kid you. In some markets, a monthly unlimited membership costs upwards of $200. Is the Bar Method worth it despite the hefty price tag? Let your newly sculpted muscles answer that.

Watch: The Bar Method Exercise DVD

In The Bar Method Exercise DVD, Bar Method founder Burr Leonard demonstrates various high-calorie-burning, body-sculpting exercises. Check out these sample clips below!

How to keep kids off the couch during the holiday break

Concern for your children's health can peak during the holiday break, when all they do is laze around worshipping the teen trinity of cell phone, keyboard and game controller, while grabbing bags of unhealthy snacks and slurping down 32-ounce soft drinks. With more than one-third of American children overweight, how on earth do you keep your kids off the couch and get them healthy and active during the holiday break -- and hopefully jump-start a healthier new year? We asked Dr. Sejal Shaw, pediatrician at Miami's Children's Hospital and creator of teen weight loss program Power Play, to give us parents the skinny on holiday break health. Here are Dr. Shaw's 10 tips for keeping our kids active and at a healthy weight.

Mom ice skating with kids

10 Ways to keep the kids off the couch during the holiday break

"It sounds simple, but to keep kids healthy on break, you have to make it fun,"says Dr. Sejal Shaw, creator of Power Play, the revolutionary and first-of-its kind doctor-supervised teen weight loss program available throughout the country. "If you demand your kids drop and do 20 pushups, it will backfire. It’s got to feel like play, and more importantly, it’s got to feel like their idea, not your idea."

Take active commercial breaks

While watching TV, have a contest for who can come up with the most fun exercise during commercial breaks, like jump roping with an invisible rope.

Have fun fitness tools on hand

Bring a football, soccer ball or basketball on vacation. Get outside with the kids and join the fun, or invite a bunch of kids over to join in.

Head to the mall

What teen turns down a chance to go hang at the mall? Even if they aren’t doing power laps around the storefront perimeter, they will at least be off the couch and moving. While they cruise the mall for their friends, you can walk, window shop and burn some extra energy, too.

Make a family play date

The holiday break is the perfect time to do something fun as a family. Instead of sitting down to a board game , visit indoor jump houses or trampoline facilities, rock climbing centers and playgrounds that have open play for kids.

Walk to see the holiday lights

Instead of piling in the car to drive around the neighborhood, bundle up and walk to see the holiday lights.

Develop an indoor scavenger hunt

Depending on the age of your children, you can develop a hunt that will get the kids moving around the house. Try a "Safari Hide-and-Seek" for the little ones using toy animals, or a "Money Scavenger Hunt" for the older kids, using Monopoly money. Just finding the most animals will delight the younger kids, and to give motivation to the teens, whoever wins gets time off from dish-cleaning or trash duty.

Stir up a little family competition

Even if your teen would rather thumb her way through a game on her phone, she probably doesn’t want Mom to beat her doing a physical activity. See who can do the most sit-ups, push-ups, jumping jacks or any other activity that will get your kid's heart’s pumping.

Buy active holiday presents

Purchase at least one present for the kids that will get them up and moving. A skipping rope, Wii game or even a hacky sack will encourage more movement.

Train together

Families who exercise together, stay healthy together. Many towns have holiday fun runs for charity. Rally your family to train and race together for the big event. Then pick another race every month or so to keep everyone motivated to stay in racing shape.

Create an active holiday tradition

Whether it’s a yearly ski trip, a hike through the woods to cut a Christmas tree or a visit to the outdoor skating rink, replace sedentary holiday traditions with more active ones. Then make sure you encourage active outings all year round.

Are You There, Chelsea? readies debut with new previews

It's midseason lineup time, and that means we finally get to see the debut of Chelsea Handler's creation, Are You There, Chelsea?

Chelsea Handler knows how to capitalize on a good thing and we can't wait to see how she turns her number one best-seller, Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea, into a number one show on NBC.

Are You There, Chelsea? debuts Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 8:30 p.m. EST and we've got our vodka chilling on ice in preparation.

That '70s Show's Laura Prepon, leads the cast as the character based on Chelsea Handler, appropriately named Chelsea.

Don't worry, Chelsea Handler is in the series, as you all may know by now, playing Sloane, the sister of Chelsea.

We've got our hot little hands on a few previews for Are You There, Chelsea?, so sit back and watch what's in store for NBC's promising new show...

In the second preview, Chelsea and Sloane have a bit of a difference of opinion when it comes to swapping boyfriends.

Something tells us, Sloane doesn't want any of Chelsea's sloppy seconds...

Back in July, TVLine reported that a few shakeups to the cast were confirmed, including the departure of White Collar actress Natalie Morales, Angel Laketa Moore and Chelsea Lately contributor, Jo Koy.

Shakeups aside, Chelsea Handler is quite the "it" girl lately.

The late-night host not only has the debut of Are You There, Chelsea? to look forward to, she also recently signed a sweet new deal with the E! network

The new deal keeps the E! staple at the network until 2014. Break out the vodka!

Handler said of the deal, "It's a great time for women in comedy, and it's a great time to have real breasts."

She also debuted her new pooch to Tweeps back in November. Oh, that Chelsea Handler! She's got so much going on.

Head over to our comments section and tell us how you like your Chelsea Handler -- via late-night or a network scripted series?

Will you be watching Are You There, Chelsea?

The holidays are a time to celebrate, but all the hoopla can play havoc on your family's health. Instead of keeping your brood home for the holidays nursing seasonal sicknesses, you can celebrate this time of year healthy and safe. From following food safety guidelines to keeping stress at bay, discover five tips to keep your family healthy this holiday season.

healthy family during the holidays

Prepare food safely

During the holidays, food-related illness can make a festive holiday fest a recipe for disaster when food is not prepared or handled properly. Be sure to wash hands and cooking surfaces thoroughly, cook foods to the proper temperature and refrigerate food within two hours of preparing it.

Wash hands often

"By and far the most common reason for acute visits to the doctor this time of year are upper respiratory infections, or concerns about the common cold," says pediatrician Wendy Sue Swanson, Seattle Children's Hospital. Sending germs down the drain instead of into your family's eyes, noses and mouths can help keep your family healthy, especially during the holiday season when you're around more people than usual. The Centers for Disease Control recommends that you wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.

Keep warm when it is cold

Protect your family's health when it's cold outside by keeping warm both indoors and outside. Dress in layers to keep warm, check that your indoor heating system is working properly and be prepared for power outages. A properly prepared emergency kit with warm blankets and an alternative heat source such as a fireplace may keep your family warm and healthy.

Prevent injuries to your family

Watch your children closely for holiday safety hazards, potential accidents and common dangers. Be mindful of youngsters when hanging fragile decorations, do not leave fireplaces and candles unattended when children are around, and watch kiddos around poisonous holiday foliage such as poinsettia plants and mistletoe.

Manage holiday stress levels

Over-committing your family to holiday events and get-togethers can equal poor family health. Make sure your family gets plenty of shut-eye, minimize holiday anxiety by being selective of the festivities to which you commit and leave plenty of time for relaxing at home to reduce stress.

Stress less with 5 tips to get organized for the holidays >>

Give your family the gift of health during the holidays by taking a few simple steps to avoid falling under the weather. Combined with healthy eating and finding fun, festive ways to keep your household active, you can boost your chances of keeping your family healthy during the holidays and well into the new year!

Dating is stressful enough; add in the hectic holiday season and the pressure to find a New Year's date and you might as well stay in bed until 2012. That's why we wanted to put together some dating tips for taking the drama out of dating this month and make the whole process a lot simpler.

Couple celebrating New Year's Eve

Focus on fun

Dating around the holidays should be fun – not stressful. So before you find yourself freaking out over a guy that didn’t call or one that won’t stop calling, take a step back and focus on having a good time. Maybe you'll meet a great guy over the next few weeks, or maybe you won’t. The point isn’t to have ultra-high expectations about meeting Mr. Right at the next holiday party you hit. Instead, take the season in stride and avoid getting too wrapped up in the drama that can often come with dating.

Raise your standards

Just because all of your friends seem to be paired up this season doesn’t mean you should feel the need to lower your standards just to get a date for the office Christmas party. Being single for the last few weeks of 2011 isn’t the end of the world and shouldn’t lead you to say yes to guys you wouldn’t normally look twice at. This is the time to raise your standards and hold out for a guy that isn’t going to try and impress you with how well he can “belch” every Christmas carol he knows. Nope, this holiday is reserved for guys with a lot more class.

Don’t settle

If you’ve recently been on a few dates with someone you only kind of like, avoid getting serious just for the sake of having a date for New Year's. Do you really want to have to kiss someone at midnight that you don’t even really like? We didn’t think so. Rather than settle, extricate yourself from the sub-par situation and think about how much fun you can have flirting and having fun. Besides, not everyone you meet at your next party will be attached meaning you could meet someone you really think is great – rather than someone who’s just OK.

Try on a new type

Now is the perfect time to date against-type. You’re attending so many events that you’re bound to come across guys who seem nice and cute, but the kind you might normally shy away from – not this season. Sit back, enjoy the holidays and strike up a conversation with someone you might normally overlook for not being your type. If you’re going to have fun and steer clear of dating drama, why not go outside your comfort zone while you’re at it? Dating someone who seems outside your usual type can be a great way to see whether you should expand your horizons when it comes to meeting men.
