The Nate Berkus Show to end after two seasons

Posted by Johan on Friday, December 9, 2011

After just two seasons of bringing us clever home decor ideas, The Nate Berkus Show is ending.

We have to wonder, will Nate Berkus go out with a cleverly decorated bang when The Nate Berkus Show takes its final bow in May?

It seems like only yesterday Nate Berkus began suggesting colors and materials for our living rooms on his new show and now it's over.

According to a report via The Hollywood Reporter, The Nate Berkus Show will continue to shoot as scheduled and wrap season two in May, making this the final season.

According to the report, Harpo Studios and Sony Pictures Television said in a statement, “After careful consideration, we have decided that The Nate Berkus Show will not return for a third season in the fall."

The statement went on to say, "We are grateful for the hard work and heart that Nate, [executive producer] Corin Nelson and their entire team have poured into the show, and we’re very proud of what they’ve delivered.”

Nate Berkus, who wasn't on the receiving end of high ratings, said in his own statement, "I’m incredibly proud of my hard working and talented staff, and proud of the show we were able to produce every day."

The daytime talk show circuit is changing with the times, but there is also a familiar face of the past heading to our TVs again.

It was recently revealed that Ricki Lake is slated to make us say "Go Ricki" in 2012 with her new 20th century talk show.

Then there's Jeff Probst who will be trying his hand at daytime with CBS Television Distribution.

What do you think of the decision to not renew The Nate Berkus Show for a third season? Were you a fan?

Head over to our comments section and sound off!

Melissa Joan Hart and Salem have a magical reunion

Posted by Johan

Melissa Joan Hart shows us her comedy chops in a new Funny or Die video that pokes fun at her teen star past.

Melissa Joan Hart reunites with a former co-star in this Funny or Die videoMelissa Joan Hart grew up as a child star on shows like Clarissa Explains It All and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Many of us twentysomethings remember growing up with Hart -- and now we're getting a bit of 90's nostalgia with the actress' new Funny or Die clip.

In the video, Hart shares a meal with her talking cat co-star, Salem, and she remembers how much she loves magic. She revisits her magical past, much to the dismay of her fellow diners.

It's pretty hilarious.

Hart is still on television with another former child actor, Joey Lawrence, in the comedy Melissa and Joey. The pair sat down with SheKnows earlier this summer to reminisce about their child actor pasts.

"I was in the movie Crocodile Dundee. I was in the movie Aliens. I was cut out of both of them. You find that you have a lot of rejection and you learn young that you have to let it go and if you don’t have thick skin you aren’t going to make it," Hart told us of the lessons she learned as a young star. "All my friends, including this guy here , were people I met in audition rooms. The people around me were child actors but I also had my life at home with Girl Scouts and dance lessons. My life was a mixture of both."

However, the industry is different now than it was a decade ago. She's embraced it by becoming a Twitter addict, even though it gets harsh at times.

"I tweeted that I didn’t like Piers Morgan’s reporting on the royal wedding," she revealed. "He heard it and tweeted back that he thought I did crap acting on Sabrina so I got worried but I ended up getting more followers. You learn that 'Oh, my God, if I do something bad I get rewarded for it.'"

Guess she's taking that lesson to heart with this funny video.

Jennifer Aniston is the hottest woman of all time

Posted by Johan

Jennifer Aniston is the hottest woman in the world according to one men's magazine. Do you agree?

Jennifer Aniston is the hottest woman of all timeThis will either please you, or really infuriate you: Men's Health has named Jennifer Aniston the hottest woman of all time.

The girlfriend of Justin Theroux beat out a slew of other stunners, including tabloid arch nemesis Angelina Jolie and legendary screen siren Raquel Welch for the coveted title.

"Her down-to-earth persona makes her seem attainable, and anyone who's seen her in Office Space has to admit she makes even pieces of flair look good. She rarely plays the airhead, and she seldom overplays a role: she's funny in a quiet, refreshingly human way," the mag writes in the article.

"And her all-too-human love life offscreen inspires sympathy that not even a string of bland romantic comedies can diminish. Other sex symbols drift toward one-dimensionality, becoming flat icons in the process, but throughout her career Aniston has remained sexy, funny and unmistakably real."

We're torn about this. Sure, Aniston has that sort of girl-next-door beauty that women love to copy. We love her style, career and laid-back attitude. However, she is not hotter than Victoria's Secret Angel Miranda Kerr or Halle Berry .

It seems like a good portion of the list is a big publicity game.

Oh, and we're not just going to pick on Aniston. Madonna makes the top 10, too.

"From shredded wedding dresses to cone-shaped bras, fascist military fatigues to, uh, absolutely nothing, being faithful to Madonna — who has sold some 300-million albums worldwide — is getting to love a million women at the same time, and that’s something we cherish," they wrote of the Material Girl.

We don't get it.

Advil is no Bad Medicine for Jon Bon Jovi

Posted by Johan

Jon Bon Jovi stars in a new Advil TV spot. It's the first commercial of his 30-year career.

Jon Bon JoviSometimes seeing a million faces and rocking them all can get a little painful. But it's no problem for Jon Bon Jovi as long as Advil is around.

The rocker's new Advil commercial was shown on ABC's Good Morning America and NBC's Today Friday morning. The 30-second spot was filmed at Bon Jovi's Soul Kitchen restaurant in Red Bank.

“Pain does not have much of a place in my life," says Bon Jovi from the Soul Kitchen in the commercial. “I checked the schedule and it’s not on it. You never know when Advil is needed.”

Bon Jovi experienced a good deal of pain when he injured his calf muscle on stage last year at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. He turned to Advil to help relieve the pain, said a representative of Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, the makers of Advil. Pfizer is a sponsor of the Soul Kitchen, which is dedicated to strengthening the community by serving nutritious meals to all.

"Most people only know one side of my life," Bon Jovi says in the commercial. "They see me up on stage and they think that's who I am. There's many layers to everybody, everywhere."

The Bon Jovi commercial, his first in his 30-year career, is part of the Advil Stories campaign.

“We know that Advil consumers are our greatest ambassadors and that pain is something we all share,” said Srini Sripada, an executive at Pfizer in a statement. “We know that Advil consumers are our greatest ambassadors and that pain is something. We are excited to showcase the true stories from pain sufferers who are finding relief with Advil, and we are thrilled that Jon is sharing his story with America. We applaud him for the work his foundation is doing every day.”

The ad campaign also features Regis Philbin and his wife Joy in a spot.

Bon Jovi can also be seen in theaters this weekend as he's part of the celeb ensemble cast of the new movie New Year's Eve.

Adele's third record not yet on her radar

Posted by Johan

Adele has been named Billboard's Artist of the Year. Is she planning on a new release any time soon? Don't hold your breath. Read on for details.

AdeleWhat a year for Adele! The singer is riding high on her successes including six Grammy nominations and making Billboard history. And now the soulful singer is basking in the glow of her success. But if you think that means she's prepping her next album, think again.

The "Someone Like You" singer says she hasn't written a single song for her follow-up yet -- and she is not planning to for a while. In fact, while she recovers from throat surgery Adele plans to do a whole lot of nada.

"I'm really looking forward to some time to do nothing," she told Billboard.com. "I imagine I'll be 25 or 26 by the time my next record comes out, as I haven't even thought about my third record yet. I'm just gonna lay some concrete, set up home and just 'be' for a bit. I'll disappear and come back with a record when it's good enough. There will be no new music until it's good enough and until I'm ready."

Taylor Swift and Adele dominate the American Music Awards >>

"When it comes to staying myself -- my career isn't my life, it doesn't come home with me," Adele explained. "So it's a piece of piss staying grounded and not being changed by it. The same things I've always liked still satisfy me. My team's the same and my group of friends are the same. Of course I'm bowled over by people's response to 21, and when I meet artists I love, it blows my mind. But it baffles me as well. I go home and my best friend laughs at me, rather than going to a celebrity-studded party to rub shoulders with people who know me but who I don't know. I'm Z-list when it comes to that sh*t."

But just because she won't have a new album out soon doesn't mean we won't hear from her. She expects to complete her recovery from vocal surgery by late winter and hopes to get back on the road ASAP.

"The surgery couldn't have gone better," she said. "But because I was singing with damaged vocal cords for three or four months and because of the surgery and because of the silence after the surgery I now have to build myself back up vocally. It's gonna be a lot easier for me to sing now. And mentally I won't be worried about my voice on stage anymore. So I have to get used to that. That'll take most of January, so February I'll be singing properly!"

We look forward to it!

Lindsay Lohan in Playboy: Nothing we haven't seen before

Posted by Johan

Lindsay Lohan is on display for all the world to see, thanks to an early leak of her Playboy photos.

LIndsay Lohan's Playboy photos are now onlineLindsay Lohan's full Playboy pictorial has leaked on the web -- we knew it was only a matter of time after the issue's cover leaked earlier this week.

Our verdict? EhhhPlayboy paid a million bucks for this?

The set is reminiscent of Lohan's many Marilyn Monroe-esque photo shoots of years gone by, including one that appeared in New York magazine in 2008. She even showed more skin in those pics -- her nether regions are pretty covered in the Playboy nudes.

She does look pretty -- though they airbrushed out her freckles and tattoos, as Gawker pointed out. We're just having a hard time believing people are going to pay to pick up the issue now that it's all over the internet.

Playboy seems happy with it, though.

"The Lindsay Lohan pictorial has been leaked on the Internet & is causing a sensation," Hugh Hefner tweeted on Friday afternoon. "The Lindsay Lohan issue of Playboy is going to be a true Collector's Edition."

Hef also announced they're releasing the issue early since everyone is already seeing the photos.

"Because of the interest & the Internet leak, we're releasing the Lindsay Lohan issue early," he tweeted late Friday afternoon.

Lohan is still scheduled to debut the issue on Ellen next week, though we're wondering if that will change, too.

"Lindsay has agreed to do one media interview during the on-sale period of her issue, and has chosen Ellen. Lindsay will not be doing any additional interviews to promote her pictorial," her publicist said in a statement.

For now, Lohan's busy being a little worker bee at the Los Angeles county morgue to fulfill her probation requirements.

"[She's] been diligently fulfilling her community service," her rep told E! News.

What to Expect When You're Expecting: See the trailer!

Posted by Johan

The trailer for the book-inspired What to Expect When You're Expecting has just been released -- and you can see it here in all its star-studded glory!

Pregnancy is hilarious! As Jessica Simpson can tell you, it's full of farting, ridiculous breasts and all sorts of other fun surprises. While many women turn to the classic advice book What to Expect When You're Expecting, director Kirk Jones has transformed it into a film journey about what it's really like to have your body taken over by another being. By the looks of it, it's a barrel of laughs!

What to Expect When You're Expecting

What to Expect When You're Expecting: The official studio synopsis

Inspired by the perennial New York Times bestseller of the same name, What to Expect When You're Expecting is a hilarious and heartfelt big screen comedy about five couples whose intertwined lives are turned upside down by the challenges of impending parenthood.

Over the moon about starting a family, TV fitness guru Jules and dance show star Evan find that their high-octane celebrity lives don’t stand a chance against the surprise demands of pregnancy. Baby-crazy author and advocate Wendy gets a taste of her own militant mommy advice when pregnancy hormones ravage her body; while Wendy’s husband, Gary, struggles not to be outdone by his competitive alpha-dad, who’s expecting twins with his much younger trophy wife, Skyler. Photographer Holly is prepared to travel the globe to adopt a child, but her husband Alex isn’t so sure, and tries to quiet his panic by attending a “dudes” support group where new fathers get to tell it like it really is. And rival food truck chefs Rosie and Marco’s surprise hook-up results in an unexpected quandary: what to do when your first child comes before your first date?

A kaleidoscopic comedy as universal as it is unpredictable, What to Expect When You're Expecting finds humor and uplift in all the unexpected trials and triumphs of welcoming a child into the world. The film stars Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, Anna Kendrick, Matthew Morrison, Dennis Quaid, Chris Rock, Rodrigo Santoro, Ben Falcone and Joe Manganiello

Eddie Murphy nabs role in new Marion Barry biopic

Posted by Johan

Eddie Murphy is heading to HBO. The actor will re-enact the life and times of former Washington D.C. Mayor Marion Barry in a made-for-TV movie. The biopic will be a collaboration between Murphy, Spike Lee and HBO Films.

Eddie Murphy For his latest movie role, Eddie Murphy is going into politics. The Oscar-nominated actor will join forces with Spike Lee and HBO Films for an untitled biopic based on Marion Barry.

Barry is the former mayor of Washington D.C., who's best known for his infamous drug bust in 1990. While at the Vista International Hotel, Barry was caught in a room smoking crack cocaine. The event was recorded on tape, leading to his arrest and conviction. Barry was found guilty of drug use and possession and sentenced to six months in a federal prison.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO is developing a made-for-TV movie that will feature Murphy as Barry. And Spike Lee is on board to direct from a screenplay written by John Ridley. The trio will also serve as executive producers alongside their HBO counterparts.

Murphy isn't the first actor to try to step into Barry's shoes. In 2002, The Washington Post reported that Chris Rock was set to produce a film based on the mayor's eventful career. At the time, Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx was set to play the politician.

Today, Barry serves as a Washington D.C. Council member, and chooses to focus on his future and not the past.  As for Murphy, he's on the fast track to reviving his career. It's been several years since he's been able to pull off a successful hit based on his star power alone.

Most recently he appeared in the ensemble comedy Tower Heist, which opened on Nov 4. The film was directed by Brett Ratner and has only grossed $72 million domestically. Murphy was also slated to host next year's Academy Awards but stepped down after Ratner exited as producer.

Here comes Suzy Snowflake

Kid-friendly scissors and plain white paper are your starting point for crafting a snowflake. Fold the paper in half, then fold the right side of the paper over at a 60 degree angle and follow with the left side . You’ll have a triangle with “tails.”

Cut off the edges of your shape in an arc -- this leaves you with a pie-shaped chunk of paper. Cut small pieces of your pie slice away then carefully unfold your snowflake. Extra points for this Christmas craft: Glue a piece of colored tissue paper to the back of the snowflake and hang it in a bright window.

No time to read? Watch What to Expect When You're Expecting

You know the book What to Expect When You're Expecting? Yes, the book sitting on your bookshelf right now, gathering dust, with the woman wearing mom jeans, sitting in a rocking chair and holding her pregnant belly? It is the inspiration for the movie by the same name and it's hilarious!

What to Expect When You're Expecting book

When we first heard the bestselling pregnancy book by Heidi Murkoff What to Expect When You’re Expecting was the inspiration behind a movie, we had visions of Cameron Diaz reading off the early signs of pregnancy and how to avoid second trimester constipation. What’s next? Is Dr. Spock’s Baby and Child Care going to be the newest blockbuster starring Zac Efron?

The movie What to Expect When You’re Expecting is hilarious, heartwarming and features an amazing cast including Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Chace Crawford and Brooklyn Decker.  The movie follows five couples dealing with the different aspects of pregnancy, parenthood and adoption.

Banks, who is the owner of The Breast Choice boutique, is suffering through a difficult pregnancy, wondering where the “glow” she was promised is hiding. Decker is a “magical pregnancy unicorn” who barely gains any weight and can walk in stilettos in her third trimester, while Diaz plays an aspiring singer who is enjoying the perks of pregnancy. "If I knew I was going to have a rack this gorgeous, I would have gotten knocked up years ago," she quips.

Lopez plays a woman who is considering adoption after having difficulty conceiving.

What can you expect from What to Expect? Along with celebs wearing baby bumps, the Baby Bjorn-wearing dads are hilarious as they brag about their parenting mishaps.

“Last week, my kid ate a cigarette,” one dad confessed. “Oh yeah, I picked up the wrong kid from daycare!" said another.

What to Expect is sure to deliver the laughs that all parents who are eithing experiencing pregnancy or who have been there, done that, need.

As a bonus feature, you can expect to see a shirtless Joe Manganiello. You’re welcome.

Fear Factor new stunts "bigger and crazier" than before

Posted by Johan

Fear Factor is returning to television Monday night with all new episodes! What's changed about the stunts between then and now? Joe Rogan explains.

Joe Rogan

Fear Factor is staging a comeback! The show that shocked viewers with bug eating and terrifying stunts that first aired in 2001 is set to return to NBC Monday night.

Joe Rogan, host of the series that ran for six seasons, is back at the helm and promises even crazier stunts than we saw a decade ago. The 44-year-old recently spoke with AOL TV about what's changed in the years since he last dangled $50,000 in front of contestants' noses.

Joe Rogan revealed, "It is bigger and crazier than it ever was before, so if people enjoyed the old show, this one's gonna be nuts. It's truly over the top."

Yet one of the most outlandish stunts they've filmed for Fear Factor's return may not get to air. Rogan explained, "I got there and they told me what we were gonna do, and I just started laughing like, 'There's no way. That's not really gonna happen. Wait, is that really gonna happen?' I wish I could tell you. NBC's still looking at the footage going, 'Uhhhh, can we do that?' There's gonna be a lot of people that are going to be upset -- it really is ridiculous."

He continued, "...it's just completely foul and offensive. I really wish I could tell you! As far as the physical stunts, they're much more spectacular. We usually do an A-B-C format, where the A stunt is the initial stunt, the C stunt is the big grand finale, and the B one is, of course, the most disgusting one. But now the A stunts look like the C stunts from the old show. And the C stunts ...some of them are just insane."

Of Joe Rogan's return as Fear Factor host, executive producer Matt Kunitz commented, "He came back a better host than he ever was. He was so present in the scenes we just shot, so involved. It's rare. I can't think of any show where the host is right there when they're doing a challenge."

Kunitz continued, "He's screaming and yelling and cheering for them. If they're struggling, he's in their ear and he's encouraging them."

Evidence of just that? Joe Rogan talking a contestant named Junior through eating a scorpion in a newly released clip. Watch below!

Did James Cameron rip off Avatar?

Posted by Johan

James Cameron claims he wrote the script for Avatar. Not so, says the plaintiff in a new lawsuit.

James Cameron getting sued for Avatar

Did iconic director James Cameron steal the concept for his box office smash Avatar? A science-fiction fan says yes — and he's suing him for it!

Eric Ryder is suing Cameron for copying the concept of his film, KRZ 2068, described in the lawsuit as "self-contained robotic exterior suits which house a single human operator ... just like in Avatar," according to court documents published on TMZ.

The disgruntled screenwriter said he originally pitched the film to the director in 1999, only to be brushed off in 2002 after serious talks. Ryder said studio big wigs told him "no one would go see an environmentally-themed feature length science fiction movie."

Well, people turned out in droves and the film has earned about $2.8 billion since its release in December 2009.

Ryder said he went back to Cameron and his crew in 2009 to complain, saying that they even copied his idea to cast Sigourney Weaver in the film. They responded by saying Cameron wrote the script for Avatar way before 1999.

Ryder is suing for unspecified damages — probably a good idea, especially since Cameron is now talking Avatar 2.

"It's on Pandora. Well, I'm really writing the second and third films together, so it completes a kinda three film story arc. And we will see the oceans of Pandora, which we haven't seen at all and that's an ecosystem that I'm dying to start designing because it's going to look spectacular," he revealed in October, adding that the new film's focus will be more narrow than the first.

"I think it's just a continuation of the same thing. I want people to feel that same sense of excitement about that world. You know, the fictional Na'vi people and I want them to feel that excitement of discovery of a new world that they're going to see things that they haven't imagined. All that sort of the perk package of the first movie is still going to be there. And the themes will be there and be played out in a way that I think people can accept."

Wonder if Ryder will sue Cameron for future films, too?

Cerita Tilang Polisi Juma't Pagi

Sinead O'Connor's very Vegas drive-thru wedding

Posted by Johan

Sinead O'Connor thanks her fans for their well-wishes after her quickie Vegas wedding.

Sinead O'Connor talks about her Vegas wedding

Singer Sinead O'Connor married on Tuesday in the natural way for Irish musicians: In Vegas!

"Dear friends... amongst whom I include whomever may be reading this with a view to writing about the glorious marriage," she wrote on her website.

"Am blogging this cus [sic] media people are naturally seeking me. On Sunday I will put up blog on whole day. Too glorious for words," she continued, along with a graphic hint about what the couple is doing in their post-wedding bliss.

O'Connor married Irish therapist Barry Herridge, 37, on the night of her 45th birthday. The couple toasted the marriage with a pink Cadillac so the wedding lived up to the "rock and roll" style she wanted.

The couple met earlier this fall after the thrice-divorced singer put out a call for "sex-starved men" on her blog. She said that Herridge was the clear winner.

"Barry sent me this wonderful email, which just took my heart away," she told the Irish Independent before the wedding. They met in a coffee shop and "talked for hours" before deciding to get hitched.

"It had to be him… I had no intention of getting married again but Barry was extremely persuasive. He proposed to me on every single date we have had since August. He is extremely persuasive -- and other unprintable things."

O'Connor looked much like her "Nothing Compares 2 U" days during her wedding, rather than the frumpy look she was spotted with over the summer. Happiness has a way of changing a person's outlook!

The big question: Why Vegas?

"I've been married before, but I've never had my dream wedding in Vegas. I wanted to do it there because it's casual, quick, not religious and, most of all, very romantic," she said.

"People always complain, 'you never invited me to your wedding,' but I prefer casual weddings. I'm so happy."

And Herridge sounds like a decent, level-headed dude.

"At first I didn't know what she was doing, and then I realized she was playing hopscotch. It wasn't Sinead but a businesswoman in a suit and in her 30s, just having a bit of fun," he told the newspaper.

"I wondered why more women that age weren't doing the same thing? And it struck me that this was exactly what Sinead was doing with her search for love, having fun, and I told Sinead about this woman in my first email."

"I love Sinead more than anyone I have ever met, or anybody I will ever meet. I am going to look after her," he added.

Call us crazy, but this one might just work!

Enjoy your sushi, minus the mercury

Posted by Johan

While many of us love our sushi, we don't necessarily love the idea of consuming too much mercury. Finally, there's a solution! Keep reading to learn about the danger mercury presents, as well as a the new Safe Sushi app to help you avoid it.

sushi-mercury-levels

Mercury in sushi is definitely something of concern, especially for sushi lovers who enjoy it regularly and for pregnant women, women who are nursing and children. Mercury both occurs naturally and is caused by industrial pollution. Regardless of source, one thing is for sure: You don't want to consume it. A new smartphone app, Safe Sushi, helps keep you in the know when it comes to mercury in sushi.

Mercury poisoning

Do you recall when Jeremy Piven experienced mercury poisoning and had to drop out of his Broadway play? While he became the butt of many late night television jokes, mercury poisoning is nothing to joke about.

According to the National Institute of Health, long term exposure to mercury can cause the following neurological symptoms:

  • Numbness or pain in certain parts of your skin
  • Uncontrollable shake or tremor
  • Inability to walk well
  • Blindness and double vision
  • Memory problems
  • Seizures and death

Of course, these are the most serious consequences, but regardless, mercury is something to consider when easting sushi.

Safe sushi smartphone app

We're nearing the end of Mercury Awareness Week, and as part of if, the Sierra Club launched the Safe Sushi smartphone app. You can download it in the Android Marketplace now and it will be available in the iTunes store on Dec. 16.

The Safe Sushi app makes it simple to determine how much mercury is in your sushi, whether you're a sushi novice or connoisseur. You can search by mercury level or you can search by the name of the sushi.

Tell us

Would you use the Safe Sushi app to ensure you're not consuming too much mercury?

Wanna party with Kim Kardashian? It'll cost you

Posted by Johan

Kim Kardashian will get her party on in Las Vegas this New Year's Eve. Want to join her? Better break out the checkbook.

Kim Kardashian partying in Vegas

If you're like us, you're starting to think about your New Year's Eve plans. Might we interest you in a little partying with divorcée Kim Kardashian?

Whoa, don't get excited just yet — it's going to cost you. Kardashian will ring in 2012 at TAO in Las Vegas and you can join her for a big, big price: $20,000.

Say what? It's true — you can party in close proximity to Kardashian and the rest of the klan if you pony up the bucks. Don't worry, hors d’oeuvres and a champagne toast are included in the price.

You can also party with Kim — at a nice distance — for a mere $200.

Thinking of going? We know of at least one person who isn't — jilted ex-husband-to-be Kris Humphries.

"It's going good," Humphries told Good Morning America of his life these days. "I'm excited to be close to playing basketball. In the off-season, I've been doing a lot of things with my foundation, spending time with my family, working on my game a lot."

The free agent is looking for a team now that the NBA lockout is over.

"It's been different, but through everything I'm just focused on family and preparing for basketball — you know, basketball is something I've always taken very serious — and moving forward," he added. "You know, for me, it's just… certain things happen in life and you've gotta move on. I'm excited to be where I'm at with the NBA season coming up and I'm ready to go."

Nice to see that he has such a good attitude about it!

Uma Thurman will be a Smash hit!

Posted by Johan

Uma Thurman is slated to make a splash on NBC's Smash. Keep reading for the details.

We're waiting to see how Smash stacks up against Glee and with the news that Uma Thurman has just landed an important story on the NBC newbie, there might be some competition.

Katharine McPhee, Debra Messing, Anjelica Huston and now Uma Thurman?

TVLine is reporting Uma Thurman has been added to Smash in the multi-episode role of a "famous and somewhat difficult movie star."

Thurman's character will toy with the notion of being the star-player in the musical that's within the TV show Smash titled, Marilyn.

Smash is really banking on top-notch talent to make the NBC midseason show a hit.

Will the star-power lineup bring in the ratings? Uma Thurman can't hurt, but we'll have to wait and see.

This would mark Uma Thurman's first big TV gig in quite some time.

While we do wonder if there will be any competition between Glee and Smash, but honestly, it's like comparing apples to oranges.

Smash tends to come off as an adult-oriented show that just so happens to have big musical numbers for a purpose -- it's a show that has a Broadway musical within it.

Glee is obviously for the younger crowd and their musical showdowns seem to just pop up when the emotion calls for it, or they're competing for titles.

Check out the trailer for Smash below...

Something tells us there will be room for both shows to thrive. All though, Glee seems to be a bit down in numbers lately rating wise.

Smash debuts on NBC Monday, Feb. 6 at 10:00 p.m. EST.

We want to know -- will you be checking out Smash? Head over to our comments section and sound off!

Gift ideas for kids with Sensory Processing Disorder

Posted by Johan

Wondering what to buy for a child with Sensory Processing Disorder? Don't stress out. Kids with sensory issues love toys that stimulate without being over-stimulating. Try one of these five fun and therapeutic toys.

child on rocking horse with SPD

If you’re not sure what Sensory Processing Disorder is, don’t feel guilty. Even parents raising kids with Sensory Processing Disorder, or SPD, are often overwhelmed by the scope of the disorder. Every child with SPD presents unique challenges, but these four gifts will help you get an idea of the types of toys that provide therapeutic fun for kids with Sensory Processing Disorder or sensory issues.

Hone fine motor skills

Many children with sensory issues struggle with fine motor skills. As with any skill, practice makes perfect. Developmental toys that encourage children to practice fine motor tasks help incorporate therapy into playtime. Shop for toys that involve precision, such as Lego building sets or beading projects. Art sets are also great for fine motor skills, especially for children who need to work on proper pencil grip.

Try: The Glow Book from Crayola helps fine motor skills.

Develop gross motor skills

Occupational therapy for kids with Sensory Processing Disorder consists of therapeutic play to help kids improve sensory integration. Gross motor skills include simple activities like jumping, running and catching a ball. Shop for toys that get kids moving. Skip anything too complicated and look for basics like big bouncy balls, dance music for kids and play forts.

Try: Go old school with Twister for a game that encourages kids to move and cooperate.

Discover games that develop social skills in special needs kids >>

Stimulate the senses

When you’re shopping for toys that promote sensory integration, try checking in with parents first to get some basic ideas. What one child finds soothing, another might find distressing. You don’t have frame the question with mention of the child’s sensory issues. Just ask what she likes and dislikes. Mini trampolines, rocking toys and swings are usually great and very therapeutic for kids with SPD.

Try: Scooter Boards help kids develop balance and spatial awareness.

Calm and soothe

Have you ever felt fidgety or bitten your nails? Many kids with SPD fidget as a means of tactile stimulation or to calm and focus. Look for toys that kids can fidget with, like small moving puzzle toys that spin or twist. In this case, skip purely therapeutic toys like chewable jewelry that might embarrass a child when presented as a gift. For younger kids, shop for plush toys with weight and texture.

Try: The Cozy Plush Buddy the Monkey can be warmed up in the microwave at bedtime.

5 budget-friendly holiday activities that teach kids social responsibility

Posted by Johan

Looking for new holiday traditions that have nothing to do with materialism? Forget the cheesy Christmas movies and driving around for miles to see all of the decorated houses in the neighborhood. There are many budget-friendly activities available in every community. Adding a socially responsible element to your celebration will not only strengthen familial bonds, but teach children important life lessons, too. Try these tips for a more socially responsible holiday season.

Christmas donations

Make a donation

At first, children may not love the idea of forgoing another toy and instead donating the money to help someone in need. However, it's a very important lesson. Each year, there is so much suffering around the world and getting the kids on board will make them feel more empowered to do something.

For example, stress the point to your child that he could be helping another little boy in Japan who lost everything in the earthquake. You can also have your children round up old, slightly-loved toys for a local toy drive. Children love to help.

Give your time

Every community has numerous volunteer opportunities during the holidays. Some popular activities include soup kitchens, gift-wrapping for donation and coat or food drives. The holiday season is when charities amp up their giving spirit and, often, need an extra set of hands. Many kitchens or other charities will let volunteers sign up just for a few hours.

Volunteering teaches your child the importance of community and helping others who are less fortunate. And it makes you feel good. Heed the advice from the former President Bill Clinton, who wrote an entire book about it, called Giving.

Attend a holiday concert

No matter your taste in music, holiday concerts abound and many are free or charge a minimal admission. Local churches are a great place to look, often bringing in local choirs, pop bands and even the more elaborate performances of Handel's Messiah.

Despite your religious affiliation, or lack thereof, churches across the country draw huge crowds to these inspiring performances during the holidays. People from all walks of life come out to appreciate the music, architecture and feeling of community.

Lessen your holiday footprint

Household waste generated during the holidays skyrockets during the holiday season. Estimates range from a 25 percent increase to 80 percent. Teach your youngsters how to lessen the carbon footprint during Christmas. For example, using a reusable gift bag is a good start because most Christmas wrapping paper cannot be recycled. Or, put your decorative lights on a timer. Your children will then be able to incorporate the lesson into other aspects of their lives.

Take your children to a holiday event they've never experienced

Expose your children to new ideas and beliefs by taking advantage of the many cultures that celebrate their own holidays at the same time. It could be African-American culture through a Kwanzaa celebration or attending a neighbor's Hanukkah dinner. Children love learning through activities.

Angelina Jolie was "prudish" about nude love scenes

Posted by Johan

Angelina Jolie says telling her actors to get naked and make out in her new film In the Land of Blood and Honey was harder for her to say than it was for them to hear.

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie has played plenty of risqué characters in her career. So why was it so hard for her to direct her actors in one little love scene?

Jolie said that telling her cast to take it all off for In the Land of Blood and Honey made her extremely uncomfortable -- but her stars, Zana Marjanovic and Goran Kostic, didn't seem to care.

Angelina Jolie says she's no copycat >>

"I believe it was Zana's first love scene and Goran is a family man with a wife and kids. You kind of suddenly feel this strange thing of asking people to participate in anything like that because they're not a real couple," Jolie told USA Today.

"You find out how strange this is to ask anybody to get naked together and put a camera on them."

"They actually made me more comfortable. I was being a lot more prudish."

Angelina Jolie goes demure at In the Land of Blood and Honey premiere >>

"I would have allowed them to be more prudish and they told me it was all right and important for the story. They wanted to do what they wanted to do and they were comfortable," she said.

Why the reluctance? Jolie said she sometimes "felt misrepresented" when she took her own clothes off on screen.

Angelina Jolie's bad girl side belongs to Brad Pitt >>

"You feel, 'Why did they hold on to that and why did they feel they needed to do that?'" she said.

Jolie's own steamiest nude sex scenes include takes from The Good Shepherd, Foxfire, Original Sin , Taking Lives and Gia.

How Social Network Connections Can Affect Health

Posted by Johan

Research into people's social network connections has revealed that peer influence can change thoughts and feelings and impact health, from flu spread to obesity. Now, identifying a network's top "influencers" is set to have a big pay-off for the field of healthcare.

People have formed social networks for thousands of years. Not Facebook-style networks – at least not exclusively – but old-fashioned relationships with friends, friends' friends, family members, neighbors and colleagues.

"Humans form social networks wherever they are, including in companies and other organizations," says Larry Miller, M.D., president and CEO of Activate Networks, Inc. And because people are interconnected, so is their health, according to physician and sociologist Nicholas A. Christakis, M.D., a Harvard professor and in 2009, one of Time's 100 Most Influential People.

He is at the forefront of research into mapping social networks and the emerging but growing field of "network science." Prior to 2009's flu season, with research partner James Fowler, Ph.D., a political scientist and professor at University of California San Diego, he monitored 744 Harvard students. First, a random group of 319 undergraduates, and a second group of 425 friends they named. The study found that on average members of the interconnected "friends" group got flu 14-46 days earlier.

So social ties can be hugely beneficial, but there can be a flipside. Dr. Christakis' and Dr. Fowler's work also has suggested that happiness, divorce, obesity, smoking cessation, and more spread via networks. Such analysis could help predict the spread of infectious disease in cities and larger geographical regions.

Currently, influenza is monitored by occurrence – physicians see patients then fill out forms. "Google has its own approach, which is very clever," says Dr. Miller, "which looks at how many people are searching under 'flu.' Now, again, the Google message occurs simultaneously with the epidemic." So both give a snapshot of current events but come too late to vaccinate people.

"What we're saying is, we can get a couple of weeks ahead," says Dr. Miller. And if such tracking is predictive, officials can respond to an epidemic early. Hypothetically, we might one day see volunteer groups in cities taking their temperatures daily and health officials using the results to map which cities are in for a rise in influenza. "You could make vaccines, encourage a vaccination program there," says Dr. Miller. "And you have a few weeks lead time to do so."

Dr. Christakis' lab, where genotypes are currently a hot topic, is a veritable petri dish of innovation. And Activate Networks, Inc., his company with Miller, is now translating its research into commercial applications. "The potential," says Dr. Miller, "is extraordinary."

Social influence occurs as we learn from one another – recommend a book or film, adopt a fashion, improve a health or work habit. It's how we impact one another's behavior. And it extends beyond our immediate friends to hundreds of people, many of whom we will never meet. Because social networks are great amplifiers, says Dr. Miller, they are ideal for spreading important messages to large numbers of people.

Learning how social influence functions in a given network and identifying its most powerful "influencers," is critical, "and the newer discovery is that it's become possible to evaluate social influence systematically and in fact to measure it," says Dr. Miller. "In Facebook terms, your friend's friend's friend, whom you may not know, influences you. That includes health behaviors like smoking, obesity, alcohol use, drug use, sleep, depression; and emotions like happiness or loneliness; and a whole range of other behaviors that have been studied."

Social influence's optimal reach is three degrees of separation. And if several hundred dollars spent to help an individual stop smoking also impacts their friends and their friends' friends, suddenly an expense can seem minimal.

People in corporations form connections that have little to do with company structure. They perhaps connect because they need one another, talk regularly, or are linked within a department or area of responsibility.

"We would argue that these networks are at least as important, probably more important, than the formal organizational charts," Dr. Miller explains. "This is how information really travels within companies and that's how behavior also travels."

Active Networks, Inc. advises corporations on improving collaboration, innovation, leadership, and health and wellness. It has partnered with Healthways in developing a wellness program for Southern California's Beach Cities Health District. To help Healthways identify the communities' most influential individuals, it created social network maps of their citizens. Trying to encourage 300,000 inhabitants into a bike-and-walk program would be prohibitively expensive and impractical. But focusing on a core group of "influencers" – perhaps a thousand, or even twenty thousand – and letting its members influence their networks cuts to the heart of the challenge.

"You can follow a relatively small number of individuals in the network and their behavior will predict the behavior of the entire network," says Dr. Miller.

His company is using a similar method to predict the use of prescription medications geographically: "And you get about a two-month window in advance of what's going to happen in the whole population; a substantial period."

It can also map networks of physicians community by community and use social network connections to encourage better practices in, say, the treatment of diabetes. Once the target "influencers" are identified, a message can be spread face-to-face or electronically.

"When presented with information about their peers, people change their behavior. It makes sense intuitively," says Dr. Miller. If he learns that most of his close colleagues have adopted a more effective or beneficial practice, for example, "it is going to be a powerful influence on changing my behavior."

He imagines that ultimately a host of wellness programs will be implemented through networks: "We're about to start doing a social network map of the entire state of Iowa with 3 million people and wellness programs across the state, because the governor of Iowa has said that he wants Iowa to become the healthiest state in the country."

There is still much to learn because influence moves in mysterious ways, not all of which are yet fully understood. For someone in Boston, having an obese friend of a friend living in California heightens their risk of obesity, whether or not they know one another. It's curious. And it suggests that geographical proximity has less impact on influence than expected.

Dr. Miller concedes that it seems counter-intuitive at first: "But it's not really – influence travels…bounces around, if you will. It doesn't just occur between individuals, it occurs among groups of people. That's one of the key insights. It's the group that's critical, not just the individual."

QUICK TAKE ON A FEW OF DR. CHRISTAKIS' "NETWORK SCIENCE" STUDIES:

+ Is divorce contagious? A 2010 study with Rose McDermott suggested that someone is 75 percent more likely to get a divorce if a friend, sibling or colleague does. Clusters of divorcees were observed to two degrees of separation.

+ A 2009 study with James O'Malley looked at health traits in friendships and changes in their status. Depression and blood pressure did not impact friendship ties. Ties between smokers were the least likely to end, and smoker-to-smoker ties the most likely to form.

+ A 2008 review of 4,739 people found that their happiness depended on their connections' happiness. Clusters of happy and unhappy friends were visible up to three degrees of separation. And a happy friend living within a mile increased someone's happiness probability by 25 percent; a cohabiting spouse, just 8 percent.

+ A 2007 study analyzed obesity's spread among 12,067 adults revealing that a person with an obese friend's own chance of becoming obese is 57 percent higher. The risk also is elevated by the weight gain of friends of friends, even hundreds of miles away. "It's not that obese or non-obese people simply find other similar people to hang out with…Rather, there is a direct causal relationship," said Dr. Christakis. The good news: the same may be true of being trim.
