Holiday Pampering for Moms

Posted by Johan on Monday, December 12, 2011

The holidays in November and December are such a stressful time for moms; not only is there so much to do that the usually busy mom is catapulted into a non-stop machine! The result can be a stressed out, tired and cranky mom. This season, take a few minutes to take a time out

1)      Practice Deep Breathing: Try deep breathing while you are driving; not only will you be calmer while driving and running errands, but you will get important oxygen into your system. Your face will be more relaxed as well, and in turn, you will look younger and more radiant.

2)      Create your happy atmosphere: Create a playlist of your favorite songs and play them anytime you can. At the same time, if you are at home, light your favorite scented candle to either relax or energize you. This happy atmosphere will keep you smiling and vibrant.

3)      Dry Brush and Firm Your Body: Give yourself a spa style treatment in your own shower. Start by dry brushing your body with a long handle bath brush . Dry brushing your body will improve circulation and exfoliate dead skin cells. Dry brushing can also help reduce the appearance of cellulite. Use long sweeping movements, starting from your feet and work your way up, stopping at your neck) and always brush towards your heart. Once you are done with your body, hop into the shower to rinse off the excess skin. Finish by adding a firming and moisturizing cream to seal in the dry brush benefits.  One to try is Lumene Spa Intense Firming Body Lotion,

4)      Detox Bathtub spa: Fill a small bowl with warm water and a few drops of an essential oil . Saturate a wash cloth with the scented water and place on your face. Next, fill your bathtub with 2 cups of Epsom salt .

5)      Hydration Treatment: During the dry winter season, it’s great to hydrate your body and face any way you can. Start this treatment off by applying a hydrating mask to your face. One to try is Philosophy Lasting Hope Instant Refreshing Moisture Mask   Next, add a natural body oil such as Lalicious Body Oil to your bathtub for soft and silky skin. Try a scent that has coconut, mango or gardenia for a tropical feeling. After the tub, apply a creamy body butter in a similar scent to drench your skin with moisture while continuing the vacation feel.

Steve Guttenberg finally gets his Hollywood star

Posted by Johan

Steve Guttenberg is finally being honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame after a career spanning over three decades.

Steve Guttenberg

Steve Guttenberg has starred in some of the most memorable films of the '80s, including Police Academy, Cocoon, Short Circuit and Three Men and a Baby -- but just because you don't see him in huge blockbusters anymore doesn't mean the actor has stopped doing meaningful work. Now Guttenberg -- a Dancing with the Stars alum -- is being honored for spending over three decades on the stage and screen with his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!

"Star of a dozen films that have grossed $100 million at the American box office, with leading-man looks and critically-acknowledged comedy and dramatic chops, Steve Guttenberg has climbed his way to the top of being one of Hollywood's favorite actors," said the Hollywood Walk of Fame organization in a statement.

"In addition to his work as an actor and filmmaker, Guttenberg has put his time to good use… creating the Guttenhouse project. He initiated the Guttenhouse project to house selected youths who are phased out of foster care programs at the age of 18 and would otherwise wind up on the streets, with no housing or direction. His first Guttenhouse has accommodated a half dozen kids for varying lengths of time for the past seven years, giving each private bedrooms, use of computer equipment, regular oversight by a trained social worker and mentoring. He has also headed the $7,000,000 campaign to provide glasses for 50,000 sight-challenged youngsters whose families cannot afford eye care. He has headed other such important national campaigns for the Entertainment Industry Foundation and was recently lauded by the Red Cross for his very personal work following Hurricane Katrina."

George Clooney will win two Oscars in 2012, says Ask.com

Posted by Johan

Curious to know what the hot entertainment stories will be in 2012? The search engine Ask.com has a few predictions.

We already know that Kim Kardashian was the most discussed star in 2011, but what's going to happen in 2012? Predicting the future is a lot harder than evaluating the past, but Ask.com is doing just that with their thoughts on the upcoming year.

George Clooney will win two oscars in 2012, according to predictions

The search engine evaluated user questions to determine what we'll be talking about in 2012. The biggest stunner? That George Clooney will earn two Oscars come awards season!

The website might be onto something here — Clooney is viewed as an Academy Award frontrunner for his two critically-acclaimed films, The Ides of March and The Descendants. He already earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in Syriana.

Clooney isn't getting carried away with the buzz.

"It's nice to have films that people like out there. It's always fun to do that. It's just exciting to have that," Clooney told Access Hollywood earlier this month. "I've been the front runner a couple of times and have lost. So I don't ever listen… I really do enjoy movies. I really like being in them and I like seeing them, that's all I really think about and worry about. The rest, I kind of let do its thing."

Ask.com is also predicting that Dr. Oz will beat fellow Oprah protégé Dr. Phil in the ratings for his daytime talk show and that Nicki Minaj will put Katy Perry to shame with album sales.

Let's see what else will happen in 2012, according to Ask.

  • Green Bay Packers wins Super Bowl second year in a row
  • McDonald’s adds the McRib to its permanent menu
  • New York reclaims its spot as top the US travel destination from 2011 leader Orlando
  • Pippa jumps onto the list of top 10 baby names of the year
  • Facebook goes public with world's largest IPO
  • Tiger Woods retires from golf
  • The world doesn't end

Hulk Hogan sues his ex: I'm not gay

Posted by Johan

Hulk Hogan is trying to clear his name by suing his ex-wife Linda Bollea after she accused him of having a gay fling while they were married and physically abusing her.

Hulk Hogan, Jennifer McDaniel and Brooke Hogan

What'cha gonna do, brother, when Hulkamania runs wild on you? Pro wrestler Hulk Hogan is using his own famous catch phrase to clear his name after his ex-wife Linda Bollea’s shocking allegations in her memoir, Wrestling the Hulk: My Life Against the Rope.

Hogan filed papers against Bollea last week, accusing her of defamation after she said he physically abused her and had a gay fling with wrestler Brutus Beefcake.

"After the four-year crazy divorce I thought I'd heard everything I could hear in the courtroom," he told Us Weekly. "Then, all of a sudden she says I abused her, that I was violent. She told everybody that I was a homosexual."

Hogan and Bollea have two children together, 23-year-old Brooke Hogan and 21-year-old Nick Hogan.

"If any of that was true, I would admit it, and [if] I was a homosexual I would embrace it. It's just so crazy to hear, so I have a real problem with it… If you're going to say I'm something that I'm not to try to ruin my career and my livelihood… I have to answer her back," he said.

Hogan goes on to say that the accusations are "ridiculous."

“I don't mean to laugh about it, because it's not funny. But it's insane. It doesn't make any sense to me,” he said.

He married Jennifer McDaniels , one year ago and says he is enjoying his new life.  "I've moved on with my life, things are great again," Hogan said. "I know what it's like to be happy again."

Kim Kardashian pal "flour bombed" in NYC

Posted by Johan

Kim Kardashian's BFF, Jonathan Cheban, was attacked over the weekend with a baking ingredient. No, really.

JOnathan Cheban flour bombed in New York

Jonathan Cheban is ditching New York City for a few days after someone chucked flour at The Spin Crowd star outside Kim Kardashian's DASH store in SoHo, according to TMZ

"This is for Kris Humphries!" an unknown man said before throwing the "flour bomb" on Cheban, according to the gossip website.

The assailant was referring to the tension between Cheban and Kardashian's ex. The reality star is said to be considering a lawsuit against Humphries for calling him a gay slur while cameras were rolling during filming of Kourtney and Kim Take New York.

Naturally, Cheban was not pleased.

"I think it's pathetic that someone would go to this length to show their support for someone," Cheban told Us Weekly. "With fans like that, who needs enemies?"

He's said to be concerned for his safety — he even beefed up security after the Humphries feud went public. However, Humphries wants to make it clear he had nothing to do with this incident and doesn't condone it.

"[Kris] would never condone hateful and unacceptable behavior like that to anyone, in any situation," his rep told TMZ

A "flour bomb" sounds pretty funny, but it's no laughing matter to the celebrity publicist and his famous friends.

"Can you believe how crazy people are?" Cheban added to The Huffington Post. "I am disturbed and embarrassed that people still act like this."

"This might seem funny but it was very scary," a friend added. "This time it was flour but next time it could be someone much more dangerous. Throwing white powder around in New York City is no joke."

Kardashian and her friends have been the subject of much hatred and scrutiny since she announced her divorce on Oct. 31: Over 200,000 people have signed a petition to take the Kardashian's off of television and singer Michael Buble even called her a b***h during a concert.

Lisa Rinna ready for a "new old chapter" at Days of Our Lives

Posted by Johan

The original Billie Holliday Reed is returning to Days of Our Lives. After almost a decade away, Lisa Rinna is set to reprise her most famous role on Daytime television.

Lisa Rinna

Former reality star Lisa Rinna is returning to her roots. The Dancing with the Stars alum is reprising her role as Billie Reed on the NBC soap Days of Our Lives. Rinna originated the role in 1992 and played the character until 1995.

During her years away, Rinna has made quite a name for herself. She's been a talk show host , a red carpet correspondent, a Celebrity Apprentice contestant and a working mom on Harry Loves Lisa.

After leaving Days of Our Lives, Rinna was replaced with Krista Allen, who occupied the role from 1996 to 1999. Rinna then returned for a brief engagement in 2002, before leaving again in 2003.

In 2004, Julie Pinson became the third actress to takeover the role, which she played until 2008. Now, 20 years after making her Daytime debut, Lisa Rinna is back! According to The Hollywood Reporter, she begins filming this week and her first episode of Days is expected to air March 8.

Reps from the show are keeping her storyline under wraps, but they promise "explosive" scenes with Billie's on-screen mother Kate and former love Bo .

"I am so thrilled to be back and excited to be acting again," says Rinna. "I have done reality shows, talk shows and I thought, what a great way to come back and play a character that I love to play so much. Feels very full circle -- like a new old chapter."

Over the past few months, Days of Our Lives has experienced a series reboot. Several core characters from the past have resurfaced, including Rinna's on-screen brother Austin Reed .

Days of Our Lives airs every weekday at 1:00 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

Kids' breakfast food is more like dessert

Posted by Johan

Would you give your children cookies for breakfast? A new report from the Environmental Working Group reveals that many breakfast foods that are marketed towards kids contain more sugar than their favorite desserts. Read on to find out more and how to keep your kids on the right nutritional track.

Bowl of Fruit Loops

It is well known that a good, nutritious breakfast  is an excellent way to start the day. However, the recent findings from the Environmental Working Group shed some light on what nutrition resides in many of our children's favorite cereals. Over half of the cereals surveyed by EWG failed to meet the government's proposed limit for sugar content in cereal, which is currently at 26 percent by weight.

Worst offenders

The cereals at the top of the list for the most sugar content have been favorites of little ones for years -- Froot Loops, Cap'n Crunch, Apple Jacks and Honey Smacks. The bad news is that many of these childhood faves contain more grams of sugar per serving than nutritionally void treats such as Twinkies and Chips Ahoy.

While we wouldn't turn to a sugar-laden dessert as a breakfast staple, that's what many parents are indeed doing. Sugary cereals are easy to serve and kids love them. The cereal industry spends millions of dollars advertising to appeal to our kids with vibrant colors, friendly characters and catchy jingles. A 2006 Yale study, however, has revealed that these types of cereals contain more sugar and sodium than cereals that are not directly marketed at children, and in turn, they are setting our kids up for making poor nutritional choices in the future.

Focus on more nutrition

It can be hard to steer our kids away from the latest and greatest breakfast cereals, but it's a good idea to read labels and stay away from processed, packaged products that contain less wholesome food and more sugar, preservatives and sodium. This can be easier to do when you start earlier, as Sam from Missouri has discovered. "At two, it's easy for me to make healthier choices for my son," she explained. "I am worried, though, as he gets older how easy these choices will be for me to make for him."

Don't worry -- not all cereals are bad for you. Some breakfast cereals are much better than others. For example, original Cheerios only contain one gram of sugar per serving and is often a favorite of toddlers trying their first finger food, and can remain a favorite, too.

Experts suggest improving your family's eating habits by offering a variety of nutritious food at mealtimes, and continue doing so even if your child balks at his plate. Breakfast is the perfect place to add more sound nutritional choices to your child's repertoire. For example, homemade oatmeal is a delicious option. Brighten the dish by adding fresh berries and milk. Try hard-boiled eggs, whole-grain toast and smoothies with fruit, milk and even spinach.

Think outside the box

You don't have to serve breakfast-only foods in the morning, either. Katie, mother of one with a second on the way, shared her son's unique breakfast favorite. "Eddie loves breakfast sausage, the only meat he likes really at all," she said. "But I balance that with the fact that he loves to eat green beans for breakfast with it!"

Reality cameras following Khloe & Lamar to Dallas

Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom are packing their bags for Dallas -- and television cameras are coming, too!

Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom going to Dallas

Get ready: Khloe and Lamar Take Dallas is most definitely coming to a television screen near you, according to TMZ

"Cameras will follow it all," a source told the website, adding that E! cameras will capture Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom's move to Dallas for the upcoming season of Khloe and Lamar

Odom was traded from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night in a surprise trade. He asked to be moved after the NBA nixed a deal to trade him and two others for Chris Paul.

"You don't want to go to no place you're not wanted," Odom told the Los Angeles Times late last week.

Odom was expected to go to New Orleans, but the last-minute trade to Dallas happened instead, much to the dismay of teammate Kobe Bryant.

"I don't like it," Bryant told the LA Times on Sunday. "I've known Lamar for a long time, and for the team itself, he's meant a lot in terms of his versatility, his personality. He's a big presence for us in the locker room, just from a team chemistry standpoint. He's great at bringing guys together and things of that nature."

Kardashian wasn't that excited about it, either.

"For I know the plans I have for u,' declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper u and not to harm u, plans to give u hope and a future.' Jeremiah," she tweeted on Saturday night.

"I am sure I will love it but I am a tad thrown off," she added. "I know for a fact blessings are everywhere!!! Everything happens for a reason. God is great."

Sara Gilbert's sister always knew she "loved vajayjay"

Posted by Johan

Actress Melissa Gilbert revealed on The Talk that she always had a feeling that her sister Sara was gay.

We're learning more and more about actress Sara Gilbert during her days co-hosting the popular daytime chat show The Talk. She's revealed a lot on the show, including her break-up with her longtime partner and her new relationship with songwriter Linda Perry.

Sara Gilbert always liked vajayjay, according to sister

As for the rest of her private life? Sister Melissa Gilbert filled us in during her Monday appearance on the show.

"On the subject of love and relationships. When did you first realize that your beautiful sister loved vajayjay?" co-host Sharon Osbourne asked Melissa, much to the embarrassment of Sara.

"You know what, I'll put it to you this way… I took her to dinner when she was in her teens and I sat her down and I gave her this long speech about how much I love you and it doesn't matter and you're my darling and blah, blah, blah and you can tell me anything," Melissa revealed. "And she looked and me and she said, 'I'm not gay.' And I was like, 'OK, whatever.'"

Sara came out several years later, though Melissa revealed she knew all along.

"Don't we have a break coming up?" a red-faced Sara joked.

Nothing to be embarrassed about, Sara! We're happy she's in love — even though she can't understand the interest.

"It's weird. I go online and it's on like CNN, and I'm flattered and I can't believe that anyone cares," she revealed on the show in late November. "As I'm developing a relationship with you guys [to her co-hosts], the audience, I do want to share stuff with you guys but kind of would rather do it on my terms, I guess, in full hair and makeup."

Holiday fluff: A gourmet marshmallow recipe

Homemade marshmallow recipe

Sky-high prices of gourmet marshmallows bring out the bah-humbug in all of us. We put the fluff back in this classic holiday confection by turning our test kitchens into a gourmet marshmallow-making factory, producing a vanilla-kissed marshmallow worthy of gift-giving.

satisfy your holiday sweet tooth

Marshmallows are confections that require heating sugar and corn syrup to a specific temperature and then whipping the hot sugar mixture with gelatin until it becomes light and fluffy. A candy thermometer seemed too fussy, but it proved to be our best friend in this simple candy making venture, producing a marshmallow with a creamy texture, just enough sweetness and a hint of vanilla.

toasted marshmallows

Our marshmallows melt like a dream , toast up perfectly for yuletide s’mores, and make hot chocolate an extra special treat.

By reducing the amount of gelatin to one packet, you can create marshmallow creme that can be drizzled over ice cream, desserts or slathered between two pieces of bread and devoured.

The flavor profile can also be changed by incorporating different extracts into the marshmallow recipe: Use 1/4 teaspoon peppermint, coconut, lemon or orange extract in addition to the vanilla.

Homemade marshmallows

Serving size 16 to 20 marshmallows

Ingredients:

  • 3 packages unflavored gelatin
  • 1 cup cold water, divided
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 3/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon sunflower or canola oil

Directions:

  1. In the bowl of a standing mixer with whisk attachment, add gelatin and 1/2 cup of the water; stir until all of the gelatin is moist, and set aside. Whisk powdered sugar and cornstarch together in a large bowl; set aside.
  2. Grease a 9-inch square pan with half of the oil. Fit a piece of parchment paper on the bottom of the pan; grease parchment with remaining oil. Add three tablespoons of the cornstarch mixture to the pan and distribute evenly on all sides by shaking the pan.
  3. In a medium saucepan with a candy thermometer fitted to the side, stir together remaining water, sugar, corn syrup and kosher salt. Heat sugar mixture over medium-high heat until the thermometer registers 245 degrees F, about eight minutes. Do not stir. Turn standing mixer on low speed.
  4. With the mixer running, pour the hot sugar mixture into the mixing bowl. Increase speed to medium; whip for three minutes. Add vanilla, increase speed to medium-high and whip until mixture doubles and is white and fluffy, about seven minutes.
  5. Using a rubber spatula, immediately transfer marshmallow to the prepared baking pan. Rub hands in the cornstarch mixture and smooth the marshmallow into an even layer. Sift 1/4 cup of the cornstarch mixture over the top of the marshmallows and place a piece of parchment over the top. Let stand two to three hours.
  6. To release marshmallows, run a rubber spatula around the edges of the pan; dust a clean cutting board with cornstarch. Flip the pan upside down onto the cutting board and gently pry the marshmallow out with the rubber spatula. Discard the parchment and dust the top of the marshmallows with additional cornstarch. Cut into squares using a pizza cutter or desired shapes with cookie cutters and dredge pieces in the remaining cornstarch mixture. Shake off excess before serving. Store in an airtight container for up to seven days.

Perfect holiday roast recipe

Posted by Johan

Slowly braising your holiday roast will leave your day free for friends, family and frolicking, while the oven does all of the hard work producing a memorable dinner.
Braised pork butt recipe

Slowly braising your holiday roast will leave your day free for friends, family and frolicking, while the oven does all of the hard work producing a memorable dinner.

Braising makes the day merry and bright

Braising isn't for everyone, or rather, not for every cut of meat. Select tougher cuts, which are also less expensive, that benefit from the low and slow cooking technique, such as pork butt, picnic ham or chuck roasts. Our braised recipe below uses local, hormone-free pork butt.

To build the best flavor, begin by seasoning the roast with salt and pepper, and then searing in a hot pan until caramelized. Add your favorite aromatics and enough liquid to cover 3/4 of the roast, and then let your oven do the rest.

Braised pork butt recipe with mustard and coriander

Braised pork butt with mustard and coriander

  • Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 bone-in pork butt
  • 2 carrots, roughly chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, roughly chopped
  • 8 garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons whole black peppercorns
  • 2 tablespoons brown mustard seeds
  • 2 tablespoons coriander seeds
  • 1 tablespoon juniper berries
  • 1 cup loosely-packed Italian parsley
  • 1 cup loosely-packed fresh thyme sprigs
  • 1/2 cup loosely-packed oregano sprigs
  • 2 cups chicken or turkey stock
  • 2 cups water, plus more as needed

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 275 degrees F. Generously season pork on all sides with salt and pepper.
  2. In a large Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add pork butt, fat side down; cook three minutes or until well browned. Using tongs, turn roast over to brown the other side. Stir in carrots, celery, garlic, peppercorns, mustard, coriander, juniper, parsley, thyme and oregano. Cook two minutes or until seeds begin to pop.
  3. Add stock and enough water to cover 3/4 of the roast. Bring to boiling, and reduce to a simmer. Cover and place in oven. Braise four hours or until pork butt easily pulls away from the bone.
  4. Remove from oven; let stand 10 minutes. Uncover and transfer roast to a large serving dish. Strain pan juices; reserving liquid. Liquid can be served as-is or reduced and thickened into a gravy.

Note: If you don't have a Dutch oven, a roasting pan works well, too. Follow the same steps, and cover tightly with aluminum foil before placing in the oven.

Is Twitter the new Facebook for teens?

Posted by Johan

First it was texting and then it was Facebook. With each tech development adopted by your teen, you have followed along, learning the technology in an effort to understand, teach and supervise. It's time to add another new technology to your repertoire: Teens are moving to Twitter.

Twitter on iPhone

You may have noticed a drop in activity on your child's Facebook account. Perhaps you thought this meant the social media site is losing allure or that your child is focusing on schoolwork.

Possibly. Or perhaps you child's online life transitioned to another social media platform: Twitter.

Tw... what?

Time for a crash course on Twitter, the microblogging platform. On Twitter, users broadcast messages -- called “tweets” -- of 140 character or less and users follow and are followed, much like Facebook friending.

Using special characters to call out other users or engage in larger conversations , users broadcast their thoughts and activities to the Twitter world. Though users can lock accounts so that only approved followers -- "tweeps" -- can see activity, Twitter is designed to be much more open than Facebook. And that's where trouble can start.

What your teen likes about Twitter

Teens are turning to Twitter in part because parents have gotten the hang of Facebook. It's not the cool place it once was -- kids are too supervised there. In addition, kids can set up Twitter accounts and who they follow so that much of their activity takes place by texting. This allows access to social media at times they might not have it otherwise, such as in the middle of the school day.

Twitter makes it easier to send a message to all followers/friends at once with the ease of a text message. A teen can gripe about English class, lament a breakup and exclaim how much a song is liked. A teen can also let a friend know what's on the math test, make fun of a classmate’s outfit or share where the party has moved. But all that activity is usually totally public. The potential for problems is huge.

Finding Twitter accounts

A good way to find the Twitter accounts of local teens is to locate the kinds of Twitter users they would follow. For example, the account of a favorite local shop or the high school athletic department. Look at the followers of those accounts and you may find some familiar names. Maybe even your child’s.

If you do find your child or his or her friends, should you say something right away? Maybe. Being able to follow the activities of your child's peer group without their knowledge may come in handy -- for a while, anyway.

The same rules apply

At some point, a conversation with your child about Twitter is in order. The same rules apply on Twitter as they do elsewhere: care, discretion, privacy and remembering that on the internet, there is no eraser. Once it's out there, it's out there, and thinking about that before each and every Tweet is essential.

Just when we think we have a handle on our kids and technology, something new comes along. Keeping up is essential, so learn about Twitter and how kids are using it -- before there's real trouble.

Holiday shopping safety tips

Posted by Johan

Though most people are full of the holiday spirit and good will this time of year, criminals look for the opportunity to take advantage. Marcia Peot, chief safety officer for StreetSafe, offers these holiday shopping safety reminders.

Woman shopping for Christmas

For extra-safe brick-and-mortar shopping:

  • Use the buddy system and shop with a friend.  You are more likely to become a target if you are alone.
  • Park your car in a well-lit area and keep track of where it’s parked. This will get you in your car and on your way faster.
  • Be careful what you post online. Don't alert others that you aren’t at home.
  • Consolidate packages so you're a less desirable target for criminals looking to steal your belongings.
  • Wear your purse across the body to keep your hands free for your keys, both when heading to your car and into your home.
  • Hide purchases from view in your parked car to prevent breakins.
  • Be just as vigilant about your surroundings during the daylight hours. A crime can occur at any time.
  • Take extra precautions. For example, StreetSafe is a new mobile personal security system that uses your smart phone’s GPS technology to connect to help instantly, before a situation turns into an emergency. Street Safe’s "Walk With Me" service offers a live connection to a professional safety advisor to keep you safe when walking in unfamiliar or threatening surroundings and provides instant access to 911 if needed.
  • Stay alert while you are walking to your car. Talking or texting on your phone or digging in your purse for your keys while walking is a distraction and makes you an easy target.
  • Check the back seat for potential criminals before getting back in your car. Carry your keys in your hand while you are walking toward your vehicle, and pick a parking space that's easy to back out of so that you can leave the parking lot quickly.
  • Ask to have your packages delivered. Though this costs a little, you won't have to deal with the hassle of carrying your things to the car and then unloading them when you get home. Women carrying a lot of packages are often targets for criminals because such shoppers are distracted and not as mobile.

Super 8 casting agent Jason James arrested as sex offender

Posted by Johan

Casting agent Jason James Murphy, who has worked with kids in hit movies such as Super 8, was arrested Friday on suspicion of violating sex offender laws, leaving parents of the child stars extremely upset.

Casting Jason James Murphy is a convicted sex offender, however he managed to work his way into casting children in some of Hollywood's top movies, including Super 8, Bad News Bears and The School of Rock, by dropping his last name and using a pseudonym of Jason James.

 Jason James Murphy mug shot

Murphy was sentenced to seven years in jail in 1996 when he was 19 years old and working as a camp counselor. He was charged with molesting and kidnapping a young boy he met while working at the camp.

Murphy, whose mug shot is pictured above, was arrested on Friday for violating Megan’s Law registry, which requires him to file a name change and change of address. If convicted, he could serve three years in prison.

The casting agents that hired Murphy told the LA Times they did not know of his past and the LAPD says they do not have evidence that he has committed any new crimes, however the parents of the child actors he worked with do not feel reassured.

"They're just freaking out. It's the one place in our industry when the kids are alone," says Anne Henry, co-founder of BizParentz Foundation, which is a support group for parents of child stars. "In casting situations, the parents are never in the room for an audition. Some guy comes up. They take your kid down the hall and disappear for 20 minutes. You never know."

Lindsay Lohan’s attorney, Shawn Holley, is representing Murphy and said that he has been in compliance and says the investigator, "refused to consider any of the documentation we had and was hellbent in this charged environment of seeing Mr. Murphy arrested," referring to the Jerry Sandusky case.

Murphy was released on Friday and will return to court on Jan. 18 in Beverly Hills.

Duggars plan memorial service for baby Jubilee

Posted by Johan

In wake of Michelle Duggar's miscarriage, the family featured on TLC's 19 Kids and Counting is planning a memorial service.

Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar

The Duggar family has planned a private memorial service for the baby Michelle Duggar miscarried, a girl they have named Jubilee Shalom Duggar, for Wednesday.

Choosing to remain open about the loss of their 20th child, Michelle Duggar reveals she allowed the miscarriage to happen naturally Sunday night, only going to the hospital after becoming lightheaded. She is expected to return home Monday afternoon.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Jim Bob Duggar shared, "We have had many tears today. This is life, and I understand that we are going through something that many others have. You think about the what-ifs, but God gives us strength to go on. We won't be able to see this child's life and the phases that we've seen for our other children, but we know we will see this child in heaven one day. We are thankful for each child, and we are blessed to have the children we have here and the ones we will meet someday in heaven."

"We would like to thank everyone for their prayers, emails and outpouring of love," Jim Bob Duggar wrote in a letter he shared with People. "As our whole family is grieving, we also know that God promises to work all things for good in our lives. Our prayer is that Jubilee's passing will help us all realize that this life is short, and our relationship with Jesus is the most important thing. He gives us a peace in our hearts as He guides us through whatever we might face."

Jubilee Shalom Duggar's name follows the family tradition of beginning with the letter "J." The only person in the Duggar family not given a "J" name was a baby named Caleb Michelle Duggar lost over 20 years ago. The Macmillan Dictionary defines Jubilee as "a big celebration for a special occasion," while Shalom is listed as "used as a way of saying 'hello' and 'goodbye.' Shalom is the Hebrew word for 'peace.'"

Kate Winslet "very disconnected" from Titanic 3-D

Posted by Johan

Kate Winslet is about to hit the big screen as Rose once again when Titanic 3D debuts in April, yet the actress isn't exactly ready to party like it's 1997.

Kate Winslet

Titanic 3D is coming to theaters next year! While fans of the mega movie can't wait to see the ship sink in three dimensions, actress Kate Winslet is struggling with this walk down memory lane.

A lot has changed since Kate Winslet originally took on the role of Rose DeWitt Bukater. In the nearly 15 years since James Cameron's Titanic first hit theaters, the 36-year-old has married, became a mother to daughter Mia, divorced, remarried, became mother to son Joe, and divorced again. Perhaps it's understandable then that Kate Winslet feels "disconnected" from her life so long ago.

Regarding Titanic 3-D, the actress recently confessed to Stylelist, "You know, at the end of the day, it's weird. It's really weird because it's 15 years ago and I don't know, I feel very disconnected now from actually what was going on in my life at the time and how I felt. A lot of it, it does really feel like a distant memory, so it's going to be quite strange to have that sort of thrust into people's face all over again."

Kate Winslet, pictured here at the Emmy Awards in September, continued, "I've no idea what it'll be like, the experience, but it's exciting to think that a whole new generation of young men and women who, perhaps, haven't seen it, who may have been conceived after the first date night of a couple going to see Titanic. I mean, God knows. It does mean that a whole new generation of people will be seeing the film and that's fantastic. That's wonderful."

Despite having been nominated for an Academy Award for her Titanic role, Kate Winslet hasn't yet set eyes on any of the revamped film's 3D effects. "I’m fascinated to see it in 3D myself," she said. "I still haven’t seen any of it. I know a couple of people who have and they're like, 'God, it looks amazing,' So yeah, we'll see."

Cole Porter's Anything Goes launches national tour

Posted by Johan

All aboard! The Broadway train is leaving the station. The hit musical Anything Goes is gearing up for a cross-country tour. Now fans everywhere can enjoy performances of "You're the Top" and "I Get a Kick Out of You," from the comfort of their own city.

After dominating Broadway, the Tony award-winning musical Anything Goes is tackling the nation. On Monday, Roundabout Theatre Company announced plans for a national tour of the Cole Porter revival. The cast will sing and dance across more than 25 cities starting next fall.

Anything Goes

RTC artistic director Todd Haimes released a statement regarding the production's big move.

"It is important as an institutional theatre to help great work get seen by a wider audience. While New York audiences and visitors will continue to have the opportunity to see Anything Goes on Broadway, I am thrilled to be able to follow-up Roundabout's successful national tour of Twelve Angry Men with Anything Goes, an equally extraordinary theatrical experience. There is so much pride in being able to share the work of Roundabout with audiences around the country and in their home towns."

Anything Goes wraps its Broadway run in late-April before taking a hiatus and hitting the road. According to Playbill, it will make its national debut in October at the Playhouse Square in Cleveland. The cross-country tour will include stops in most major markets including Los Angeles.

The play is directed and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall, who won a Tony Award earlier this year for Best Choreography.

Anything Goes was originally written and produced by Cole Porter in 1934. The story centers on the misadventures of passengers aboard a transatlantic ocean liner.

The 2011 Broadway revival currently stars Sutton Foster and Joel Grey . But as of now, no cast has been announced for the national tour.

Handmade holiday gifts

With all the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping, we often forget to slow down and enjoy the meaning of the holidays. By making handmade gifts, we are forced to slow down, put some love and effort into our gifts, save money and, if you get your kids involved, spend time together as a family.

Coasters

Handmade coasters make a great gift for teachers, grandparents and family members. You can customize your coaster set with matching scrapbook paper, coordinating scrapbook paper or you can personalize your coaster set with your children's handprints or pieces of their artwork.

  • Scissors
  • 4-inch by 4-inch pieces of plexiglass
  • Craft knife and cutting board

  • Soft paintbrush
  • Thin crafting cork or cork drawer liner with adhesive backing

Nanny to the stars

Sometimes when we think our mothering years are behind us, we get an unexpected bundle of joy. When a mother becomes pregnant and already has a household of children in place, integrating this new arrival into a well-oiled family machine can be challenging. “Nanny to the stars” Marva Soogrim shows you how to smoothly handle the transition.

Surprise!

You have just been told by your doctor that you have a baby on board. If you weren’t planning a child, this may be an even bigger surprise to you and your spouse. Sometimes, women experience an unplanned pregnancy later in life. The arrival of any newborn not only changes the lives of the parents, but the existing siblings as well.

With a child or children already in your household, you just can't ignore what this new development is going to bring. Suddenly, the world of pacifiers, 2 a.m. feedings and changing diapers become the focal point of you and your spouse’s lives once again. Even though you already have children and have been through this routine, the next nine months can still feel like something totally new as each pregnancy can bring a different set of circumstances to contend with. Here are seven ways to bring calm to the chaos to your household during the pregnancy and beyond.

Start spreading the news

You and your husband telling your children about the new baby on the way is one of the most important first steps. Gather your entire family in the living room . Remind them how strong you all have grown as a family. Let them know how much you love them and that this addition will be an extension of that love.

If the room's atmosphere changes with the announcement, have no fear -- each person will process this information differently. Be prepared to give answers to the questions that arise. There will also be many more in the coming months.

Dollars and sense

Even though your family is expanding, your bank account might not be. These days, making financial adjustments to the household have come into play for most, especially when a newborn is on the way. From additional hospital costs to private doctor visits to the babies overall necessities, things can get costly quickly.

Now, you don't need to completely change your lifestyle and get your kids nervous for the new addition. Make the transition smooth by cutting back on some miscellaneous items that can make a definite difference like magazines, movies, extra phone lines and takeout meals. This will help you to save money and avoid having a stressful pregnancy as you look forward to having a healthy baby.

Don't "overdue" it

Don't overdue it when you're due. If you have children who are a bit older and bordering on becoming teenagers, they probably keep you very busy and active. Driving them to various sporting events, friends houses and the mall can take up a lot of time and energy. And you can't exert the same energy as you did before you got pregnant.

I have seen women wind up on bed rest because of this. I suggest trying to keep the kids busy with indoor activities and have your husband available after work and on weekends as much as possible.

Preparation is key

Being prepared in life is key for everything, especially prior to giving birth. Getting things ready so the transition coming home is smooth is half the battle. Include the kids in on getting the house ready for their brother or sister. From painting the baby room to cleaning the entire house to buying a crib and other layette items, there are many jobs you can delegate to the family and work together in unison.

Arrival time

When everybody is introduced to the baby at the hospital, let the older siblings hold him or her. The same level of family participation should happen when you bring the baby home. One rule to remember is to make sure everyone washes their hands at all times before holding the infant.

Invite the kids to help with feedings. In my experience, some children will want to be involved and others rather not at the beginning. Let them all choose the way they want to bond with the baby without any pressure.

The dream team

Because your children may be older now, they can help with chores around the house. Working together as a team is what will ease this transition for everyone once the baby comes home.

Give your child or children individual duties that they can focus on. This will make everyone feel proud that they are an important part of bringing up their new brother or sister. Keep in mind that there will be challenging days ahead and be happy that you have the genuine support of your family.

Lots of love

After the baby has arrived, remember to offer as much attention to your other children as the new addition so they don't feel left out. Your husband is in trenches with you every day, so show him you appreciate his efforts. Give him kisses and hugs on a regular basis to let him know he's doing a great job. At night, try to have some alone time together.

And if you have pets, be sure they get some loving too. They are more sensitive than you think. Remember, the love that everyone gives you back will fuel your heart as well.
