Giuliana Rancic: Mastectomy scars are a "badge of courage"

Posted by Johan on Tuesday, December 6, 2011

Giuliana Rancic has elected to undergo a double mastectomy. The E! News host has no delusions about what permanent impact the procedure will have on her body, and is choosing to look at her future scars as a "badge of courage."

Giuliana RancicGiuliana Rancic's double mastectomy was the topic of Tuesday's episode of The Wendy Williams Show. The E! News host, who is scheduled for surgery next week, opened up about her outlook on her body for the future.

Giuliana Rancic, who has elected to have a double mastectomy followed by immediate reconstructive surgery, shared on the show, "Listen, I love my girls, but I'm gonna feel more like a woman when this is all done."

The 37-year-old added that she feels "scars are beautiful. I think scars tell a story." Giuliana was joined on set by husband and Giuliana and Bill co-star Bill Rancic, who, it seems, has been trying to find a little humor in a stressful situation.

Giuliana Rancic speculated of her breasts after reconstruction: "They might come out looking even hotter. You gotta have fun with this. We find the humor in everything. Bill helped pick 'em out. I'm like, 'Bill, that big? Really?'"

Of the choice to undergo a double mastectomy the television personality shared during her Today show announcement, "It's important to me to get the cancer out... 'Mastectomy' the word seemed so scary to me at first. After doing research and seeing the advancements, the surgery has come a long way from 20 years ago. The results can be incredible. Not only can it save your life, but you can come out feeling healthier and with a positive self-image."

Bill Rancic added a hopeful note during the pair's appearance, saying, "Our goal is to be done with this by Christmastime and not look back."

Giuliana is pictured here working the red carpet at the premiere of In the Land of Blood and Honey on Monday, Dec. 5. The event reportedly is the last scheduled day of work for the E! News host before her double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery.

Jesse James: American Chopper dudes "wanna fight me"

Posted by Johan

There's no love lost between Jesse James and the boys from American Chopper. Read what they had to say about their simmering feud.

Jesse JamesIn a two-night special Jesse James battled Paul Teutul Sr. and Paul Teutul Jr. for custom bike supremacy -- but the feud extends beyond the American Chopper TV screen.

Calling the Teutuls nothing more than "cake decorators," James says the father-son pair know nothing about building bikes. Neither "would even know how to turn any of my machines on, let alone use them," James said.

People "are tired" of Jesse James >>

Rather ungracious coming from someone who was asked to be a guest on the Teutuls' show -- they did James a favor to help him revitalize his career. Back in the day they were TV rivals, with James' Monster Garage battling American Chopper.

"I would not have invited [James]," the elder Teutul said in an interview with the LA Times, "because he's a jerk. The way he's coming off, it's like he's doing us a favor. If he gets a show, it's great. I hope he does. He hasn't been doing anything, and now all of the sudden he's back. My question is, Why's he back?"

Kat Von D calls out Jesse James on his cheating ways >>

He's back because Discovery Channel wanted him back, and thought the competition would be the perfect venue.

"Across the board, what works is authenticity," said American Chopper executive producer Christo Doyle. "Jesse's the real deal. He's a legitimate bike-builder, and now he's getting back to the craft that made him who he is. People respect that aside from the other stuff that he's been sucked into."

Doyle is working on a pilot with Jesse James that could be on the air as soon as spring 2012.

James knows he ticked off the Teutuls. He told TMZ, "The senior is cool but the kid's like wound up tighter than a watch... I think he's gonna want to fight me."

We think Paul would win.

The nude photos, which Hugh Hefner revealed are a "classic tribute" to Marilyn Monroe, reportedly set the Playboy mogul back $1 million.

A representative for Playboy revealed the Lindsay Lohan on Ellen plans saying, "Lindsay has agreed to do one media interview during the on-sale period of her issue, and has chosen Ellen. Lindsay will not be doing any additional interviews to promote her pictorial."

They rep continued to describe Lindsay Lohan's Playboy photos saying, "It's a classic tribute inspired by the original Tom Kelly nude pictorial of Marilyn Monroe, a portion of which was the original playmate in the very first issue of Playboy. Oh, yes, she's naked. And classy, very classy."

The 25-year-old, who recently spent only a handful of hours in jail for a 30-day sentence, posed for the photos in early November. Rumor has it one of Lindsay Lohan's Playboy photos may land the cover of the magazine's January issue. An insider commented previously, "There is never a guarantee that everyone will like the photos or that they will be of high enough quality to use for the cover but Playboy wanted to make sure that Lindsay’s pictures were exactly what they wanted."

A rep for Lindsay Lohan said of the photos, "The pictorial is absolutely fantastic and very tasteful, and will be accompanied by an interview that will let readers see another side of Lindsay."

The episode of Lindsay Lohan on Ellen is scheduled to air Dec. 15.

Janice Dickinson says America's Next Top Model is rigged

Posted by Johan

Janice Dickinson says America's Next Top Model is totally rigged, and the only deciding vote comes from Cover Girl.

Janice DickinsonWho really decides who wins on America's Next Top Model? It's not host Tyra Banks, and it certainly is not the judges, says Janice Dickinson.

The self-proclaimed original supermodel and former America's Next Top Model judge says she quit the show because she realized it was rigged -- and that the only deciding vote came straight from the corporate bosses at Cover Girl.

Tyra Banks admits she's a Top Model fake >>

Dickinson shared her thoughts in an interview with FilmOn.

"Being conned, thinking I was actually helping judge a TV franchise, that actually my say had any input -- but it really didn't, you see, because Cover Girl are the people who choose the model. Not any of the judges, not what Tyra says. It's who Cover Girl thinks should win each season," Dickinson claims.

"People don't know that. When I found out I split."

Lost and found: Janice Dickinson's false teeth >>

"The fact of the matter is now she's made like $90 million… She makes a lot of money per year still hawking that franchise worldwide. In essence, they're doing it in every country. It's Cover Girl that chooses the winner."

ANTM winners receive a $100,000 contract with the cosmetics company.

"But definitely on Tyra's show, it's rigged," said Dickinson. "It's rigged. That's why I was just, I was so depressed, sitting there knowing that."

Dickinson's claim that she quit over the scandal contradicts what she told Radar magazine back in 2005: "I got fired. After a few episodes I began getting labeled a bitch, and that got to me. I was just telling the truth and I was saving these girls from going out there and being told that they're too short, too fat, their skin's not good enough. I was to America's Next Top Model what Simon Cowell is to American Idol."

Rita Hayworth's grandson latest of sad celeb kid deaths

Posted by Johan

Andrew Embiricos, the grandson of Rita Hayworth was found dead in a case of apparent suicide. Sadly, he's not the first celeb offspring to meet such a fate.

Rita Hayworth and Fred AstaireAndrew Embiricos, the grandson of movie icon Rita Hayworth, was found dead Sunday in his Chelsea apartment due to an apparent suicide, according to the New York Daily News. The 25-year-old was found dead with a plastic bag covering his head.

Embiricos had seen his share of troubles. He was battling HIV and had been in and out of drug rehab in addition to attempting suicide in the past, according to Village Voice gossip columnist Michael Musto.

Hayworth, along with Betty Grable, were the top pinup girls of World War II, died in 1987 at 68 from Alzheimer's disease. The fate of her grandson is not unique in the annals of Hollywood. Below are five tragic cases of celebrity proving to be a fatal tonic in the lives of the children of the famous.

Margaux Hemingway

Hemingway, granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway, was at the height of celebrity in the '70s -- a supermodel partaking in New York City's disco scene as the world bowed before her. However, health and personal problems caught up with the beauty and in 1996, one day before the anniversary of her grandfather's suicide death, she took a fatal overdose of phenobarbital.

Nikki Bacharach

In 1966, Burt Bacharach wrote the song "Nikki," for his daughter with wife Angie Dickinson. Nikki was born prematurely, according to the independent newspaper, and was plagued by the developmental disorder Asperger's syndrome throughout her life. She ended the struggle by her own hand in 2007 when she suffocated herself using a plastic bag and helium.

Casey JohnsonCasey Johnson

A very public engagement announcement to reality star Tila Tequila put Casey Johnson, heiress to the Johnson and Johnson fortune and daughter of New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, very much in the public eye. In hindsight, it was one of the final acts of a life out of control. She died in early 2010 in a friend's guest house due to causes related to diabetes. She had a history of not taking her insulin.

Daniel Milland

Actor Ray Milland was perhaps best known for the brave role of an alcoholic writer in 1945's "The Lost Weekend." His son Daniel Milland was lost himself, it appeared, as the Associated Press reported that the younger Milland had trouble keeping a job and was living with friends when he shot himself in 1981 in Beverly Hills.

Richie Tinker

Richie Tinker, the son of Mary Tyler Moore and producer Grant Tinker, had a troubled life, Moore told People in 1995. He didn't take the breakup of the Moore-Tinker marriage well, and wound up in drug misadventures. The 24-year old had seemingly righted himself by 1980 when he accidentally shot himself. He was playing with one of his guns when it went off. It was a gun called the Snake Charmer and it was taken off the market due to its hair-trigger instability, Moore said.

Glee recap: The glee clubs feel the sectionals heat!

Posted by Johan

The Troubletones and the New Directions went voice to voice in a sectionals showdown for the ages. Keep reading to see who took the trophy.

The return of Sam Evans and sectionals provided a lot of stellar moments on Glee, but the continual pouting of Quinn took away from what could have been a perfect episode.

Before we tell you who took sectionals, here's how the teams got there.

Rachel and Finn tracked Sam Evans down at a strip club where he was making money as a stripper named White Chocolate.

After slipping him a dollar, Rachel and Finn convinced him and his family it was in Sam's best interest for him to return and compete in sectionals.

After a good 30 minutes of watching Sam go gaga over Mercedes and Quinn act like a spoiled brat, it was finally time to get down to business.

The Troubletones took the stage with a sassy girl power mash-up of "I Will Survive/Survivor" that seemed to leave the New Directions less than impressed.

We, however, wanted to put on some dancing shoes and rock out to the anthem!

The New Directions, dressed in fun tuxedo outfits, took on a rendition of the Jackson 5's "ABC" that slid into Janet Jackson's "Control" and right into Michael Jackson's "Man In The Mirror."

It was seriously sick -- in a good way!

Both groups went hard, but in the end The Troubletones fell to the New Directions.

The episode also ended with Quinn ditching her attitude and looking toward a real future by making amends and passing on some advice to the girls of The Troubletones.

She, with Rachel's help, convinced Mr. Schue to give the girls a bit more face time in hopes of getting Mercedes and the girls to come back to the New Directions.

Sweet! We have everyone back on the team!

What did you think of the sectionals episode of Glee? Did it live up to the hype?

Head over to our comments section and sound off.

Candace Bushnell dumps her cheating hubby

Posted by Johan

Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell is divorcing her husband after she discovered his affair with a younger woman. Read the dirty details!

Candace BushnellIt's a case of art semi-imitating life: On Sex and the City Carrie had a fling with a ballet star, only to flee after he mistreated her. In real life, author Candace Bushnell married the ballet star -- but she's now leaving him, too.

Bushnell is divorcing her husband of nine years Charles Askegard after she found out he carried on a clandestine affair with ballerina Georgina Pazcoguin -- a woman he danced with for eight seasons in the New York City Ballet.

Click here for more celebrity divorce stories >>

Askegard is ten years younger than the 53-year-old Bushnell. Pazcoguin is 25.

Bushnell is so humiliated by the discovery that she has named Pazcoguin as a co-respondent in the divorce proceedings!

A source told the New York Post, "The divorce was proceeding amicably, then Candace found out about Georgina and became very upset. She believes their affair could have gone on for some time."

Sex and the City: A fashion scrapbook in salute to TV's most stylish >>

"Humiliated, it was her idea to take the unusual step of naming Georgina as a co-respondent in the divorce papers."

Bushnell announced the divorce over the weekend, saying in a statement, "I respect his desire to pursue his own happiness and hope that we will continue to be friends."

Askegard retired from the New York City Ballet to start his own company, Ballet Next -- and Bushnell threw a party to celebrate in October, attended by none other than Pazcoguin. The two have been performing together since 2002 when Pazcoguin began an apprenticeship with the famed ballet company; she joined as a member of the corps de ballet in 2003.

Askegard's only comment has been no comment. He told us, "I respectfully decline to comment further regarding this matter," he told the New York Post. "Georgina has no comment at this time either."

Don't worry, Candace: Carrie would've taken her shoes and walked, too.

How to Use & Apply Bronzer to Face | Makeup Tips

Posted by Johan

Since sun exposure is harmful to the skin, it's no wonder why bronzer has become a staple in every woman's makeup kit. Unfortunately, not having the right color or shade of bronzer can make you look unnatural and caked-up. That said, it's common for women to use bronzer that is too dark for their skin tone. Luckily, an easy way to combat this is to find a bronzer that looks golden on your skin, but not brown. You can apply a rose or peach-colored blush atop the apples of your cheeks to add a flush of color. One other mistake to avoid when applying bronzer is putting most of the product on the cheeks; ideally you should apply bronzer around the hairline and jaw. Now that we've covered the basics, here are some more tips for applying bronzer. Read the article: How to Use and Apply Bronzer to Face | Makeup Tips. Madonna digs Kate Middleton's style

Posted by Johan

From one style icon to another, Kate Middleton has great style says Madonna. Read what the Queen of Pop has to say about the Duchess and other royals.

MadonnaTurns out we're not the only ones with a huge girl crush on Kate Middleton. Of all people, Madonna loves her too!

The Material Girl says the Duchess of Cambridge is one Brit that fashionable young ladies can emulate.

"She is a lovely girl with a great sense of style," Madonna told People at a screening of her directorial debut W.E. by the Cinema Society and Piaget in New York. "Her wedding dress by Alexander McQueen was very beautiful."

"I like her choices," Madonna added. "She's elegant and still knows how to have some fun. I'm a fan of her style."

Ironically, another royal whose style Madonna admires is one who was never quite a royal at all -- and who is directly responsible for Kate's hubby Prince William being in line for the throne.

It's official: Madonna is performing the Super Bowl halftime show >>

Wallis Simpson is the subject of Madge's new flick -- and after King Edward VIII abdicated the throne to marry her, the great grandfather of Wills took over. Without Wallis, we'd have no Kate!

"She developed a style and stuck with it whether people were interested or not. I admire her individuality," Madonna said of Simpson.

Kate Middleton "doesn't look like a princess" say kids >>

"The freedom that [Kate] has and the freedom the royal family has now is nice and is refreshing," she shared. "It's too bad that Edward VIII didn't have that same kind of freedom back in 1937 to make his own decisions and to be the prince of the people, which Prince William is allowed to be. I like how modern they are now."

Madonna's movie W.E. is out in limited release Dec. 9.

South Carolina teacher spanks students

Posted by Johan

A South Carolina teacher has been accused of spanking a child in school. Besides violating school district laws, this case brings a bigger question to light: Does corporal punishment belong in the classroom? And really, does it belong in a child's life at all?

teacher spanking child

Chris Petrasek was accused of third degree assault and battery when several seventh grade students came forward and alleged that he spanked them in school. Outraged parents in South Carolina's York County are wondering how this could have taken place and what the next step will be. The idea of corporal punishment in the school is not an easy one to digest any more, and many states have outlawed it outright.

Spanked for bad grades

Three students have stated that Petrasek spanked them for infractions ranging from missing questions on tests or talking out of turn in the classroom. He has been suspended with pay while the investigation is underway, but unsurprisingly, the local parents are outraged.

Clover School District outlawed corporal punishment in 2007, but Petrasek doled out the spankings behind closed doors and even went so far as to lay students across his lap to administer the blows. The students felt angered and humiliated, but endured it for several months before they became brave enough to come forward.

Corporal punishment in the school

Spankings, canings or strappings were a mainstay in schools around the world, but in recent decades it has fallen out of favor, with 31 states in America outlawing it in public schools. In Europe, corporal punishment has been banned in most countries, and many have also outlawed it as well in the home.

In the U.S., each individual state has the ability to prohibit school spankings, and in some states where it is still allowed, many school districts have adopted prohibitions on their own. Clover School District is an example of this, as South Carolina does not prohibit corporal punishment in the schools. In 1867, New Jersey was the first U.S. state to outlaw corporal punishment in the school. Since then, thirty states have followed suit, with New Mexico the latest to do so in 2011.

Do you feel it belongs in school?

Some parents are saying that "kids these days" need more corporal punishment in their lives because they feel parents today are too liberal, and still others prefer a more gentle approach with their children. Is this what's wrong with today's children and teenagers? We polled a few parents to see how they feel about spanking and corporal punishment in schools as well as in the home.

Brooke, mother of one, feels physical punishment, if any, does not belong in the school. "Unacceptable," she said, when told about the South Carolina teacher. "Only a parent can decide what, if anything, warrants a spanking for their child." Kelly from California agrees and goes even further. "I am anti-spanking in all forms, including parent to their own child," she stated.

Tony from Missouri, however, is all for bringing the strap back to schools. "If the kid is screwing up badly then let 'em have it," he shared. "But I don't agree with it for bad grades, just bad behavior. Kids nowadays think they can do whatever they want because they can't be touched by parents or school authorities."

Get him out of there

Regardless of their personal view on spanking, everyone agrees that the South Carolina teacher went way beyond any rule breaking and should be stopped as soon as possible, as he seemed to be teetering on the edge of really disturbing behavior.

Tell us

Should teachers ever be allowed to spank students? If so, under what circumstances?

Alec Baldwin kicked off flight for "Words With Friends"

Posted by Johan

Alec Baldwin is staying in Los Angeles a bit longer than expected -- he was kicked off an American Airlines flight for refusing to turn off his phone.

Alec Baldwin kicked off American Airlines flight

Alec Baldwin isn't really known for his overly-friendly personality. The actor is known to speak his mind, both in real life and over Twitter, without worrying what people think about him.

Well, it looks like his penchant for arguing caught up with him Tuesday afternoon — the 30 Rock star was kicked off an American Airlines flight out of Los Angeles after he refused to stop playing an iPhone game.

"Flight attendant on American reamed me out 4 playing WORDS W FRIENDS while we sat at the gate, not moving. #nowonderamericaairisbankrupt," he tweeted after being removed from the flight.

News of Baldwin's departure came fast and furious from fellow passengers aboard the plane.

"On an AA flight at LAX. Alec Baldwin removed from the plane We had to go back to the gate. Terrible that everyone had to wait," former MTV Networks president Michael J. Wolfe tweeted.

Another passenger made a joke out of it.

"#Alec Baldwin is getting kicked off of AA flight as I tweet this!" author Grant Cardone tweeted. The reason? "Didn't have his Capitol One Card and Abusive to attendant is what I was told by AA authority," he joked, referring to Baldwin's endorsement deal with Capital One.

This isn't the first time Baldwin has used Twitter to spew insults. The Schweddy Balls-loving actor got into an altercation with a Manhattan Starbucks employee during the late summer and tweeted about it.

"Starbucks on 93 and B'’way. Uptight Queen barrista named JAY has an attitude problem," he tweeted.

Starbucks employees told the New York Post that it was because Baldwin was being a diva.

"I was here when it happened — it was really just him being an [expletive]," an employee told the Post.     "[Baldwin] was very rude and disrespectful and arrogant. He's probably the rudest guy I've ever met."

Baldwin has a good attitude about the American Airlines snafu, though.

"#theresalwaysunited," he tweeted.

Jack is back for 24: The Movie

Posted by Johan

Jack Bauer is going back to work. Twentieth Century Fox has kick-started plans for their film adaptation of 24. After several production delays, the long-awaited movie is finally back on track.

Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer in 24Tick-tock goes the clock for the canceled TV series 24. The award-winning drama ended its eight season run in 2010, but will be reborn on the big screen. Headliner Kiefer Sutherland will reprise his role as government operative Jack Bauer, who'll once again protect our national security.

According to Deadline, Mark Bomback is currently tweaking the 24 script, which was originally written by Billy Ray. He's expected to turn in the finished product to Fox by the end of the year.

If everything goes according to plan, 24 will go into production sometime next spring. Preferably after April, when Sutherland's work schedule opens up. The film version of 24 will feature a slightly altered take on the show's famous hour-by-hour format.

Last year, Sutherland told Britain’s Sky Magazine that the film would "be a two-hour representation of a 24-hour day."

He continued, "With the TV show we always had to have the crisis come to us because we couldn’t move. Twice we put Jack on a plane and it was a disaster. This will be different — it will be very feasible to get from Eastern Europe to England in the course of 24 hours.”

Until the production begins, Sutherland has plenty of work to keep him busy. He's currently filming the thriller The Reluctant Fundamentalist, which centers on a Pakistani Wall Street broker as he deals with the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The actor's also shooting a new TV series for Fox called Touch from creator Tim Kring . It co-stars Danny Glover and Gugu Mbatha–Raw and follows a man whose young, mute son can predict the future.

Kristin Chenoweth's ACA dress sparks boob job rumors

Kristin Chenoweth and Trace Adkins' hosting duties made for a case of tall meets small at the American Country Music awards Monday night!

Kristin Chenoweth

Kristin Chenoweth had heads turning and jaws dropping in a cleavage-baring dress at the American Country Awards Monday night. Check out a picture of the emerald green gown that is now the talk of the town below!

The 4-foot-11-inch actress and country singer shared hosting duties with one of country music's tallest gents: 6-foot-6-inch Trace Adkins!

Kristin Chenoweth may be most well-known as an actress, but music with a touch of twang also holds a special place in her life. She said recently, "I know that some people see me in different things: I'm known for RV, West Wing, Pushing Daisies, Broadway, Wicked, it's kind of always different. But I hope what they learn about me ...is, yes, I'm a trained opera singer and, yes, I've done Broadway, but country music is also in my heart."

Before the show, the pint-sized star joked of looking up to Trace Adkins, "I'll just let y'all know if he's clipped his nose hairs."

On-stage during the American Country Awards, held in Las Vegas, the 43-year-old challenged her co-host to a sing-off. Wearing an obnoxiously padded behind reminiscent of Kim Kardashian's famous booty, Kristin Chenoweth rose to the challenge of singing Trace Adkins' "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk."

After the show Chenoweth tweeted to her fans, "Goodnight all! I had so much fun with @traceadkins. I love u honey! Congrats ACA winners and nominees!" Moments later she added, "I had fun!!!! Wahooooooo."

Tuesday, as attention turned to Kristin Chenoweth's cleavage-baring dress, one Twitter follower bluntly asked her "did u get a boob job??" Kristen Chenoweth promptly replied, "NO!!!!!"

Angelina Jolie goes demure at In the Land of Blood and Honey premiere

Posted by Johan

Angelina Jolie is now a director, thanks to the upcoming release of her film, In the Land of Blood and Honey. She's also doing the best to look like a serious director with her simple red carpet look at the film's Monday afternoon premiere.

Angelina Jolie with Brad Pitt's parents

Jolie walked the red carpet dressed in a loose black top by Joseph and a black Ralph Lauren skirt. She accessorized with Cole Haan shoes and Ofira jewelry.

Her best accessories? Brad Pitt and his parents, Bill and Jane Pitt!

The film also marks Jolie's first real screenwriting experience as well, though a Croatian journalist says she stole the concept.

Angelina Jolie at In the Land of Blood and Honey premiere

"[Braddock's] main female character is subject to continuous abuse and rape by soldiers and officers in the camp. In addition to being raped continuously by soldiers and officers, she is forced to become a servant at the camp headquarters, a duty assumed by very few of the captives. The Motion Picture's main female character is also subject to continuous rape by soldiers and officers in the camp and subsequently becomes a servant at camp headquarters," reads the suit, according to Radar Online.

The mother-of-six hasn't spoke about the allegations, but she is talking about the film.

"I was thinking and meditating on these international themes of violence against women, lack of intervention and how human beings are changed and warped by war and how some people come out stronger and some people are truly broken," she said of the inspiration.

Oh, and those six adorable kiddos come up from time to time.

"The kids asked me the other day and I asked them if it was just because they wanted to have a 'big cake,'" she laughed. "They see movies that have the people getting married in the movies or somebody's, you know, the happily ever after. Shrek and Fiona are married," Jolie told ABC's Christiane Amanpour in an interview.

"We've explained to them that our commitment when we decided to start a family was the greatest commitment you could possibly have. Once you have six children, you're… you're committed."

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Symptoms Treatments

Posted by Johan

What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome - Its term used to describe the range of disorders that arise in children after exposure to alcohol during pregnancy.

They are entirely avoidable and the most common preventable cause of birth defects and brain damage in children.

The disorders in order of most to least severe are:

(1) Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS)
(2) Partial fetal alcohol syndrome (pFAS)
(3) Alcohol related neurodevelopmental disorders (ARND)
(4) Alcohol related birth defects (ARBD)

The more alcohol a pregnant woman drinks, the higher the risk of damage to herself and to the developing baby because of alcohol crosses the placenta and produces the same blood alcohol level in the fetal circulation.

Before few days ago, I read one article about Health Care Tips in which described that, Alcohol can damage fetal development is during the first trimester, specifically between three and six weeks, this is the time when organs are forming.

It can also increases the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth.

Symptoms of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome -

(1) Facial abnormalities, skeletal limb abnormalities, tremors (in the newborn infant), agitation and crying (in the newborn infant)
(2) Poor coordination/fine motor skills;Failure to thrive;Small head circumference
(3) Poor socialization skills, such as difficulty building and maintaining friendships and relating to groups.
(4) Growth, motor, and mental retardation
(5) Mental retardation and delayed development
(6) Slow physical growth before and after birth
(7) Incomplete development of genitalia

Fetal Alcohol Syndrom Treatments -

  1. Babies and children with alcohol-related damage often need developmental follow-up and, possibly, long-term treatment and care
  2. Pregnant alcoholic women should be involved in alcohol abuse rehabilitation programs and monitored closely throughout pregnancy
  3. If you're an alcoholic, don't get pregnant until you get help. Use birth control methods until you're able to control your drinking
  4. Heart abnormalities may require surgery
  5. A child with FAS may need help with social skills and memory

Christie Brinkley is sorry for tax mixup

Posted by Johan

Christie Brinkley says her tax woes are nothing more than an accounting error -- and she is fixing it ASAP.

Christie Brinkley

The drama in the life of ageless supermodel Christie Brinkley is seemingly never-ending. After her tumultuous divorce from shady ex Peter Cook, the mom was hoping to enjoy some calmness -- and then the tax man came knocking.

The IRS says Brinkley owes back taxes of over $500,000 and have placed a lien on her New York mansion in the Hamptons. Now the cover girl says the whole thing is just a major accounting error that she intends to rectify right away.

Christie Brinkley is a Chicago girl >>

"I regret not paying more attention to my accounting," Brinkley told TMZ.

"I was surprised to learn of the tax lien filing and took immediate steps to rectify this matter. I discovered the tax lien was the result of an error."

Brinkley added, "My taxes will be paid in full by Wednesday, Dec. 7 and I expect the tax lien to be released immediately thereafter."

Christie Brinkley loves her age, hates marriage >>

"I regret not paying more attention to my accounting, but I have been and remain focused on my whole family as both my parents navigate serious health issues."

In other words, her accountant is probably looking for a new job today.

Celebrities that do not pay their taxes >>

Brinkley can take a little comfort in the fact that she joins the ranks of other celebrities who have had tax problems, like Wesley Snipes, Nicolas Cage, Val Kilmer, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne and Marc Anthony.

Brinkley has appeared on over 500 magazine covers, has been married four times -- including to iconic Piano Man Billy Joel -- and has four children.

How to talk to your only child if she asks about siblings

Posted by Johan

"Mommy, how come I don't have any brothers or sisters?" The question might come up if you're the parent of an only child. Here are a few tips to help the conversation flow naturally.

mom talking to daughter about being an only child

Only child on purpose

By the time my daughter was 3 years old, she and I’d been to every playgroup and Mommy and Me class around, so she had to notice her family was smaller than most -- but she never said a word. Then, when she was about five, she asked the question: "Mommy, how come you have brothers and a sister and I don't?"

I'd prepared for this moment, read articles about parenting only children and bought her a storybook, but I already felt my answer, "You were the perfect amount for us honey,” I told her. “Big families are nice and so are little ones." Smiling, she seemed satisfied, and except for a couple times over the next few years, she never asked again.

But what do you say if you wanted more children?

Honest conversations about families

Carolyn White, editor in chief of Only Child magazine and author of The Seven Common Sins of Parenting an Only Child, said that when her daughter was four and asked about siblings, White told her the truth -- she wanted another baby but couldn’t have one, and from there the dialogue flowed.

“We talked about different kinds of families: families with two dads, two moms, one mom and one child, one dad and one child, etc. In the process, my daughter came to understand that our family size was right for us,” she said.

Read about mowing down only child myths >>

"Children feel much safer when they are spoken to honestly."

White kept the conversations age appropriate and over time, they happened naturally. “Children often need to have ideas repeated several times to fully grasp all of the complexities,” she explains. Moreover, she was always honest. “Children feel much safer when they are spoken to honestly and adults don’t waver about important issues.”

Years later, when she told her daughter she was disappointed she couldn’t give her a sibling, her child replied, “’Oh, mom. I just wanted a sister because Amanda had one. It was the same as if she had a Cabbage Patch doll that I wanted.' End of story. Time and patience often take care of things in their own way,“ suggests White.

Age appropriate answers for kids

Dr. Stuart Jeanne Bramhall, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, recommends giving answers according to your child's age. "It's quite unwise to disclose to a child under twelve that parents are having health, financial or marital problems," she says. “Young children aren't developmentally mature enough to handle such disclosures, which are likely to cause substantial insecurity, anxiety and worry."

Read tips for parenting the only child >>

However, with kids over twelve, you can offer more information about why you didn't have more children, but always leave out reasons that relate to marital problems.

Every family is special

Julie Simens author of Emotional Resilience and the Expat Child, works with families who relocate all over the world, helping kids and parents adjust to their global lifestyle. Simens offers an interesting perspective for parents of only children. "Most parents jump into the ‘uniqueness’ first, but I like to paint a broad picture,” she says.

Simens suggests helping children verbalize, based on their age and experience, that lots of families have unique qualities. "I like to take the focus off of  'you are special' to 'we are special,'" she says. “Build on the emotional vocabulary of your child. This will help her explain exactly how she is feeling. If he or she is feeling lonely, it would be better to know if the feeling was isolated, lonely, left out or ignored."

Ashton Kutcher, Lea Michele flirt at New Year's Eve premiere

Posted by Johan

Is love in the air for Ashton Kutcher and Lea Michele? The twosome have sent tongues wagging after they appeared very cozy at the Hollywood premiere of New Year's Eve on Monday night. Is there more than an on-screen romance in the works here or were the stars just hamming it up for the cameras? You be the judge.

That Ashton Kutcher doesn't waste any time, does he? While Demi Moore mourns the end of her marriage, her estranged husband is doing no such thing.

A newly-single Ashton and his co-star Lea Michele have set the blogosphere ablaze after they appeared looking very affectionate and cuddly on the red carpet at the Hollywood premiere of their new movie, New Year's Eve, on Monday night.

New Year's Eve is a follow-up to Garry Marshall's Valentine's Day. The romantic comedy features an all-star ensemble cast  and a basic plot that sees the lives of a number of New York City couples and singles intertwine on the last night of the year.

Staring lovingly at 25-year-old Lea, Kutcher couldn't stop gushing about how the Glee actress brings a "passionate aspiration" to her character in the film, which opens in theaters on Friday.

When the pair wasn't making googly eyes at one another, they were caressing each other tenderly and whispering in hushed tones between giggles, spy-witnesses said.

Did we forget to mention that, like Ashton, Michele is also on the rebound? She and actor beau Theo Stockman called it quits in September after a year-long courtship.

Is there more than an on-screen romance in the works here or were the two just hamming it up for the cameras?

Ashton Kutcher Twitter pic: Why buy the cow? >>

Ashton's pals believe the alleged philanderer's sudden interest in Lea is all part of his first adventure as a single man: Operation Ditch Demi.

"He totally loved Demi, but the whole time he was with her he always felt like he was in a state of restraint. He loves beautiful women and beautiful women love him, so he always had this feeling of being a kid in a candy store but only having access to one candy jar," one friend revealed.

"Splitting from Demi has been devastating, but now he's starting to accept that it's over and he's trying to focus on the silver lining -- which for him is basically a sex rampage."

How charming.

If you're in the Los Angeles area, people, do beware of a randy Ashton on the loose!

Family Learns Health Secrets Through Genome Sequencing

Posted by Johan

Breakthrough research in the field of personal genomics

A few years ago, John West suffered two frightening pulmonary embolisms from blood clots that traveled from his leg to his lung.  Up to 600,000 Americans suffer from venous thromboembolism each year, a combination of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and one third of them die as a result. West manages his condition with drug therapy to help prevent clots from forming.

As a former head of a genome sequencing startup company, West had a keen interest to find out if his two children would inherit his condition, which was traced to a genetic mutation called Factor V Leiden, and if so, how they could best manage their future health.  West and his wife, both in their early 50s, enlisted the help of researchers at Stanford University to analyze the secrets hiding in their family's collective 24 billion base pairs of DNA.

The West family is now the first family in the world to have their entire genomes sequenced. The findings were recently published in the journal PLoS Genetics. John West was a co-author of the study.

"The real breakthrough here was to take a family and look at the flow through their whole genetic information, to make our best estimate for their risk for disease, what drugs would work well for them in the future and which would not. For the children, we could see which piece of DNA came from Mom and which came from Dad," says Euan Ashley, MD, PhD, lead researcher and co-author of the study. Dr. Ashley is Director of the Stanford University Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Disease.

The Stanford team found that the teenage daughter does carry the risk factors for developing dangerous blood clots, inheriting the genetic risk from her father as well as an additional factor from her mother. As a result, she is already making lifestyle changes, such as getting up and walking around if she goes on a long flight, because sitting for long periods of time is a known risk factor for those with the tendency to develop DVT/PE. The teenage son on the other hand, did not inherit the genetic risk for this condition from either parent.

Even more surprising, by running the daughter's genome data against the Pharmacogenomics Knowledge Base, a database of known associations between gene variants and 141 drugs, the researchers were able to identify that the daughter has an increased risk of bleeding if she is prescribed an antiplatelet drug called clopidogrel in the future. Analysis also showed that the mother has an increased risk of bleeding if prescribed clopidogrel. For West himself, the research confirmed the optimal dose of warfarin to treat his condition, based on his genetic information.

The cost to sequence an entire genome has declined significantly in a short period of time. In 2001 with the advent of the Human Genome Project, the cost was several hundred million dollars to sequence an individual genome, and as of 2008 the cost was about $2 million. The West family paid $40,000 per genome in 2009 and since then, the cost has plummeted to about $4,000 per genome today. Researchers used to analyze a single molecule level at a time, but now they can sequence millions or billions of DNA molecules at once."

Dr. Ashley sees whole genome sequencing as an exciting new frontier for the future of personal healthcare. He says, "I think everyone will have this done ultimately. Your genome will be in your medical record and this will be something your physician looks up when prescribing a new agent. That's the dream of personal medicine."

What secrets are hiding in your family's genome? Would you like to know what the future holds for your family's health or which drugs could work best or should be avoided?

Dress like a star

If you need some design inspiration for the perfect dress this holiday season, look no further. We spoke with celebrity Hollywood designer Dalia MacPhee to help you find some of the most gorgeous gowns that will suit every woman’s figure. Fret not, ladies, you will be looking fabulous and dressing just like a celebrity for the holiday season!

SheKnows: Dalia, you are recognized as one of the top Hollywood designers and your beautiful gowns have been worn by celebrities such as Nina Dobrev and Grace Park! Who is the most exciting celebrity you are currently dressing, and which one of your glamorous gowns will she be wearing and to which event?

MacPhee: Honestly, I consider my customers to be the real celebrities and the most exciting genre of who I dress.

However, if we are talking Hollywood -- there are several great projects in the works. I've had the pleasure of working with some really great names including Hilary Duff,  Heidi Klum, Keyshia Cole, Audrina Patridge, Julianne Hough, Amber Riley and Serena Williams, to name a few.

You will be seeing many of my new pieces on some of Hollywood's most elite at the upcoming award shows, and I wish I could divulge who. However, superstition prevents me from saying anything!

SheKnows: Your gowns and dresses are not only gorgeous and exquisite, but they are also vegan and eco-friendly. Can you tell us more about the types of materials you choose for each design?

MacPhee: 90 percent of the line is vegan-friendly, which means no animals were harmed -- just celebrities! Most people understand animal products to be items such as fur and leather. However, vegan also means no silk, since silk is actually acquired by using the silk worm. I have found some really amazing, soft, luxurious fabrics that also happen to be vegan and go great with a little salad dressing!

SheKnows: The holidays are upon us and that means it's time to look glamorous! From your Fall 2011 collection, which gowns would you recommend for slender physiques to plus sizes? Each woman wants to look her best, so tell us how we can all dress like a celebrity this holiday season!

MacPhee: Yes, the holidays are the perfect excuse to glam it up! Actually this blue chiffon one shoulder dress works for most body types, but looks particularly amazing on slim silhouettes, as it accentuates the figure and shows off the legs.

This gown has been worn by Dancing with the Stars' Niecy Nash and As the World Turns' Julia Pace Mitchell. It looks amazing in all sizes and is my favorite plus size dress to date -- as the beautiful angled ruffles create a slimming effect and the built in bust cups provide lots of top support. This gown tucks where it needs to tuck and flows where it needs to flow. Amen!

SheKnows: Your gowns are very unique and elegantly designed. Where do you gather inspiration from?

MacPhee: From a technical standpoint, my inspiration always comes from my customers. And wanting to design pieces that they will love and make them feel absolutely beautiful!

Couple hosting their first Christmas

hosting tips for couples

There comes a time in every couple’s life when they host their first holiday dinner, either for friends or family. With  Christmas fast-approaching, we thought it was high time to offer some simple hosting help for any duos new to planning and executing a holiday dinner. Read on for our top four hosting tips sure to make your seasonal soiree a success.

Make what you know

Since this is the first time you will be hosting your friends or family members for a big holiday bash, it can be very tempting to want to impress by making a menu full of complicated items. We strongly advise against this unless you have ample time to start practicing now so that by the time the big night rolls around you’ll have every dish down pat. It’s not that we don’t think you’re capable; it’s just that hosting is about more than just cooking. You’ll be flitting in and out of the kitchen, mingling, taking coats, greeting guests as they arrive – you won’t have unlimited time at the stove to get everything perfect. Instead of trying to impress your mother-in-law with a fancy, multicourse meal, stick with what you know how to make well. You’ll be a lot more comfortable, have more time to spend with guests and there won’t be much risk of a menu meltdown.

Work as a team

The best thing you can do once you decide to host a holiday dinner is to agree to work as a team. This means that both of you share equal responsibility for everything that goes into making the night a success. Cleaning, menu planning, shopping, cooking , decorating and making sure guests are having a good time are a lot of work and neither of you should have to shoulder the duties solo. Create a plan of action that divides all necessary responsibilities equally. Then on the night of the dinner, work together to ensure everything goes smoothly. If you notice your spouse is caught talking to your brother and can’t check on the turkey, do it for him. If you find yourself caught up in the kitchen, ask your spouse to be with the guests while you’re unable to host. Teamwork makes everything easier.

Stay calm

Quick tip: Have a special code with your husband so when you say “I can’t wait for pie,” he knows you mean “I am now going to the bedroom to scream into a pillow for a few minutes.” That way, no one will ever know you needed a break and you get to have your two minutes of alone time without ever having to show weakness.

There will likely be several moments during the preparation for and during the holiday dinner where you feel stressed out or like you’d rather call the whole thing off and order pizza. That’s OK. Hosting is stressful for even the most accomplished party planners. The trick is to not let your anxiety get the better of you. Even if you feel like screaming , continue smiling. Even as you smell the roasted vegetables burning, don’t cry – just add some extra glaze and hold your head up high. The calmer you pretend to be, the faster your anxiety will ebb away.

Have fun

Most importantly, have fun. This is your first big holiday hosting event as a couple and you might as well enjoy it, stress and all. Despite the hard work, hosting is fun. You get to have all of your friends and family in one place, without having to go anywhere or trudge across town or state lines in a blizzard. Remember that everyone at the table wants to be there , but for the most part, people enjoy holiday gatherings and will appreciate not having to do the cooking for once.

Adele's 21 is UK's best-selling album of the century

Posted by Johan

Rolling in the Cash: Adele's 21 has surpassed the Amy Winehouse blockbuster Back to Black to become the UK's biggest seller of the century.

British songbird Adele has set another record. The "Chasing Pavements" songstress has surpassed Amy Winehouse to nab the top-selling UK album of the century, Billboard said Monday.

Yep, Adele's soulful sophomore album 21 has become the biggest seller in Adele's native England and neighboring Ireland, the Official Charts Company confirms. The record has moved over 3.4 million units since its release in January.

The LP has overtaken the late Amy Winehouse's 2006 masterpiece Back To Black. That disc  nabbed the best-seller of the century record shortly after the songstress' death in July. Back to Black has sold 3.3 million copies to date.

Adele's 21 has not left the top 10 since its release and has been on the chart for 45 weeks. The album was given a further push in the wake of six Grammy nominations last week, including an Album of the Year nod and a Song of the Year hat-tip for "Rolling in the Deep."

Adele steals the show at the MTV VMAs >>

The European success of 21 has been matched in the U.S., the world's biggest music market. The compilation passed the 4 million copy mark in October and is the nation's biggest seller of the year.

Meanwhile, Adele, 23, continues to recover from surgery to save her voice. The powerhouse was forced to cancel the remainder of her live dates and award show appearances after undergoing surgery in Boston last month to treat a benign polyp on her vocal cords.

In a message posted on her blog over the weekend, the singer said she was "lost for words" over the Grammy recognition:

"A couple days after finally being able to talk again I'm pretty speechless.
