Nikki Blonsky sweeping hair in suburban New York

Sign o' the times? Actress Nikki Blonsky has accepted a part-time job as a makeup artist after failing to attract more lucrative work in Hollywood. It's the latest blow for the star, who has seen her fortunes fade since her starring turn in the 2007 movie musical Hairspray.

Good morning, Baltimore! Your favorite airport brawler and former Hairspray star Nikki Blonsky has a new gig -- one that requires a broom and dustpan!

The out-of-work actress is putting in some hours at Superstar Hairstylists in her hometown of Great Neck, New York, tipsters tittle tattle.

"I was in the salon having my hair done and I saw her working there. I couldn't believe it. She was sweeping up hair but also doing people's make up," a customer told Radar Online this week.

We suppose it could be worse: The kid who played Jonathan on Who’s the Boss? sells Tupperware now.

Blonsky first burst onto our radar when she joined Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes, John Travolta and Queen Latifah in Adam Shankman's 2007 movie musical remake, Hairspray.

She wasted no time channeling her inner diva by getting into a racially-charged catfight with former America’s Next Top Model catwalker Bianca Golden in the middle of a Caribbean airport in 2009.

Then poof! -- she was gone.

Blonsky mysteriously disappeared from the Tinseltown scene almost immediately after her short-lived ABC Family comedy, Huge bit the big one last year.

This isn’t the first time Nikki's been snapped worked in the service industry. Remember when she was caught selling shoes at a Great Neck boutique?

Nikki spent the summer working behind the register for upscale sole man Steven Dann. She managed to fly under the radar as a salesgirl for the establishment for months before E! Gossip Guy Ted Casablanca blew the lid off the scoop in July.

"When Huge failed to make a splash, work slowed to a crawl for the actress and she needed some extra moola. Steven says she's one of the best employees he's ever had! Nikki had known Steven for a long time," said an informant, who dropped the dime about Nikki's latest career endeavor.

"When she started her career she got shoes, bags and accessories from the store for red carpets but recently approached him about working at the store. So it was done. Customers come in and see her and ask, 'Oh my God! What are you doing here? Are you shopping?,' and she laughs and says, 'No, I'm working!'" the source added.

When the story spread across the web like wildfire, Nikki pretended it was all an elaborate mistruth.

She now admits, however, that financial struggles prompted her to accept a gig as a part-time Superstar makeup artist after she obtained her cosmetology license earlier this year.

In a posting to her Twitter page on Monday, the now-23-year-old insists she is "proud" to make an honest living and plans to continue to audition for acting roles.

"It's true I'm workin at Superstar Salon as a make-up artist & more. I'm proud to be workin & helpin pay bills but I'll never loose sight of my dreams... Just cause I'm part time workin doesn't mean I'm gonna give up on my dreams [and] don't give up on yours. I might book something big soon, keep positive."

As legend has it, Nikki's hard at work "on a project that will catapult her career, something bigger than Hairspray."
