Breaking Dawn sucks another win out of lifeless box office

Posted by Johan on Monday, December 5, 2011

With no hot new movie releases, Dec. 2-4 was a quiet weekend at the box office. Early estimates leave no question that Breaking Dawn won the weekend, with The Muppets trailing.

This weekend's box office top ten includes the same contenders as last week, with a few mild shakeups in placement. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1 and Jason Segel's The Muppets maintained their leads over the second slowest weekend of the year, while holiday-friendly Hugo and Arthur Christmas danced past Happy Feet Two.

Edward and Bella's romance rules the Box Office again

Box Office: Dec. 2-4
1 The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1 $16.9 million
2 The Muppets $11.2 million
3 Hugo $7.6 million
4 Arthur Christmas $7.4 million
5 Happy Feet Two $6 million
6 Jack and Jill $5.5 million
7 Immortals $4.4 million
8 Tower Heist $4.1 million
9 Puss in Boots  $3.1 million
10  J. Edgar $2.4 million

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1 won the box office battle for the third weekend in a row, sucking in just under $17 million over the weekend. For a bit of perspective, Breaking Dawn banked that in just one day last weekend and more than doubled those numbers its opening weekend. Along the same lines, however, Breaking Dawn's $71 million opening day a few weeks back was almost as high as this weekend's total box office haul for all movies, which was a paltry $82 million.

In other words, Breaking Dawn boasts an impressive total for week three, especially considering how quiet the box office was. Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and crew are celebrating an impressive $247.3 million total haul in North America, and $515.3 million worldwide.

The Muppets held fast at second, while Martin Scorsese's Hugo expanded to wide release to battle Arthur Christmas. The family tales were neck and neck over the weekend. Hugo has been tapped as third, but in a race this close, estimates could have it wrong. Arthur could pull ahead once final numbers drop.

Next Week's Box Office

Next weekend, three new comedies enter the fray: Garry Marshall's star-studded New Year's Eve; Diablo Cody's Young Adult, starring Charlize Theron; and Jonah Hill's The Sitter hit theaters. Plus, a handful of new indies will vie to make a name for themselves and get into the Oscar game with George Clooney's The Descendants, Shame and The Artist.
