In our society, where women are still being reprimanded for breastfeeding in public, learning how to nurse is unfortunately not part of our cultural knowledge. Breastfeeding may be the most natural way to feed your baby, but it is still a learned skill. Most hospitals and birth centers offer breastfeeding classes free of charge to pregnant moms. Make sure to take advantage of this opportunity where you can learn about correct latch, positioning and other breastfeeding tips.
After your baby arrives, make sure you have a certified lactation consultant available to help you get breastfeeding off to the right start. Many hospitals and birth centers have lactation consultants available on staff, but bringing in your own consultant is okay too. Your lactation consultant will help you to guide your baby properly onto the nipple, adjust your latch, achieve proper positioning and problem-solve any challenges that may arise. All of these are very important to the development of a successful breastfeeding relationship.
Remember that while you are nursing, your body will require a lot more water than usual. Make sure to stay well hydrated and follow your thirst. A good rule of thumb is to keep a tall glass of water next to your nursing station so you can grab a drink at a moment’s notice.
Skip the schedules and nurse on demand. In order to establish your milk supply and a successful breastfeeding relationship, it is best to follow your baby’s hunger patterns. Newborn babies will root, fuss and try to suckle almost anything when they are hungry. They often feed up to 12 times in a 24 hour period. By simply watching for hunger signs and nursing when your baby is ready, your body will adjust to accommodate the needs of your baby as your milk comes in.
Breastfeeding can be uncomfortable during the first few weeks as your nipples adjust to constant suckling. Lanolin cream can do wonders to soothe sore or cracked nipples. Gently dab a little on after each nursing session. It is completely safe for baby and will greatly speed up the healing process.
However, if you experience anything beyond mild discomfort, it is best to call in professional help. Even if you got off on the right foot with your breastfeeding relationship, it is not uncommon to develop a minor breastfeeding challenge, which can be easily corrected with the help of a certified lactation consultant. Check with the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants and find a consultant near you.

Gerard Butler, Woody Harrelson, Rashida Jones, and Sofia Vergara were up bright and early to help announce the nominees for next month's Golden Globes.
The nominations for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's 69th annual Golden Golden Awards were announced in Beverly Hills this morning -- mirroring many of the noms that dominated the 18th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination ceremony on Wednesday.
"Good morning everyone and thank you for setting your alarm clock extra, extra early today," HFPA president Aida Takla-O'Reilly said moments before the roll call of nominees for the year's best in television and film began.
The Artist leads this year's film nominations with six bids.
Eternal bachelor George Clooney picked up three.
Tied for second-place in Thursday's nominations were the 1960s racial drama The Help and Clooney's Hawaiian family story The Descendants.
The Golden Globes have historically been good at predicting likely best picture nominees for the Academy Awards.
Globe voters once had a solid track record at forecasting the champ of Oscar night's biggest prize, but they've been missing the mark in recent years.
In the past seven years, only one top Globe recipient has gone on claim the main trophy on Oscar night.
The voters might have better luck in 2012. The show now has two best picture categories, one for drama and a second for musicals and comedies.
Here's a peek at some of this morning's highlights…
For a complete list of nominations in all 25 categories, click here.
Reactions, Raves, Snubs? Were any of your fave actors/TV shows/movies left out of the Golden Globe nominations? Sound off in the Comments section!
The Golden Globes will be presented Jan. 15 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, televised live by NBC and hosted by envelope-pushin' comedian Ricky Gervais.

Being a work-at-home mom presents networking challenges, but staying connected to potential business opportunities when you’re "off the clock" is the key to career building.
In this issue of Working Mom 3.0, writer Stephanie Taylor Christensen explores how to sharpen skills you already have, to find success.
When you're a work-at-home mom, it’s too easy to put limitations on potential career success, simply because, on the surface, a mom who works outside the home has more opportunities to network. Since I became a work-at-home mom, I've realized that success or failure basically hinges on two simple truths: having passion for what you do, and making every second count — from your home office and when you're "off the clock." You don’t have to attend trade shows, conferences or press events to generate business. The truth is, plenty of networking opportunities exist for stay-at-home working moms that don't require putting on a business suit or even finding a sitter. The key is to advance your skills in striking up conversations, listening and observing what's going on around you.
Have heard about the "ABCs" of sales? Successful work-at-home moms have a secret ABC mantra of their own: "Always be connecting." This doesn’t mean you have to transform into a self-serving opportunist, obnoxiously pitch your business to every person your meet on the playground or constantly be connected to technology. It means that you should view every person you meet as a potential opportunity for growth — whether in the form of a business relationship, or simply as a way to learn something new. Every mom you meet was something else before she took to the playground for "fun" on the weekends. When you inquire about people’s life stories, you unlock new opportunities and connections.
In marketing, many million-dollar decisions are based on the feedback of complete strangers. They are called focus groups, and while there is a formal methodology to recruitment and analysis of their feedback, you can apply the same idea as a work-at-home mom success strategy.
Working from home doesn't mean that you lack access to the outside world. Use other people to your advance your insights, just as researchers do. If you're in a conversation, really listen to what people tell you about themselves. Observe the cues those around you give, wherever you are. If you're in a crowded store waiting in line, what are people wearing? If you're in the park, look at the books people read and the gear they have. Simple observations can help you spot trends, and inspire new ideas.
Read other people’s blogs and websites that are related to your business. Do a Google search on your competitors or for key search terms related to your career, and stay on the pulse of what's happening. There is always a new need waiting for a solution — be the person who fills it and you’ll never be short on career success.
The modern woman is redefining what it means to have a successful career. Rather than feeling torn between climbing the corporate ladder and having a happy family life, many women are choosing to merge the two and transition careers from a traditional role to a more flexible one. Working Mom 3.0 is reinventing the definition of "working mom," as office hours are held at home and revolve around nap times.
This column begins by chronicling the experiences of Stephanie Taylor Christensen, a former marketing professional turned self-employed stay-at-home mom, writer and yoga instructor, as she strives to redefine "having it all" on her own time and terms.

To learn more, we turned to Dr. Steve Craig, clinical psychologist and author of the upcoming book The 6 Husbands Every Wife Should Have, for some advice on how to be a better spouse. What better time than the holidays to work on improving your relationship and boosting your bond? He advocates being a responsible spouse and a team player. "This means that you have to know yourself, your spouse and your relationship well," Craig explains. He outlines the three things successful spouses make a priority in their relationship.
If you don’t know yourself, how can you expect your spouse to respond to your behavior? "Recognize your patterns, your stress points and your strengths and weaknesses," he says. "Don't try to do things beyond your abilities." It's when people try to do too much that they get overwhelmed, which can cause added stress that in turn hinders your relationship. "The holidays are difficult enough on a relationship without having a spouse who is in over his or her head."
It’s equally important to know your spouse's strengths and weaknesses and to tailor your expectations to those abilities, Craig says. "The holidays are no time to start expecting your spouse to be something or someone he just isn't ever going to be." It’s also important to anticipate family drama and turmoil and talk in advance about how you want to handle it. "Remember it’s your job to stand by your spouse and support him in those situations in whatever way the two of you decide is best," he explains.
Every relationship is different and it’s a good idea to really get a handle on whatever ups and downs you might have. "Know the areas the two of you work well together, and where you don't," Craig says. For example, if sharing chores causes stress, then divide and conquer. Or if you work well together on things like chores and shopping then spend that time together. The better you know what works and what doesn’t, the easier it will be to avoid conflict -- especially during the holidays.

Baby gear and supplies can drive any dad crazy. From the items you think you need --but don’t -- to the ones you do, figuring it all out is a process. Check out my thoughts on baby gear, including the man bag.
There were two things my wife Idina and I couldn’t do without. The first was a pacifier. Everyone has their take on whether they should give their baby a pacifier, but for us, that was a necessity.
Second, every baby needs a soft blanket. It doesn’t matter what your taste is -- color, design, etc. -- make sure you always have a blanket.
Most parents want to spoil their babies and kids, but we like to take it easy on the toys. There are so many that will just collect dust. Trust me, your child will need less than you think. As your baby gets older, you’ll know what you need more of, but if you don’t go crazy in the beginning, you won’t have too many.
The diaper bag is a necessity. It’s a fact of parenthood: You have to carry a diaper bag. After forgetting it a few times, I realized exactly how important one is! So my advice is to make it as cool as possible. Go for a masculine bag in a basic color.
Through experience, I figured out how to scale the contents down so I’m not constantly lugging a hefty bag over my shoulder. I stick with the basic necessities -- diapers, wipes, etc. -- and I pack according to the length of my outing. I don’t need eight diapers for a one-hour trip.
The best advice I have about diaper bags is not to be ashamed. Check out what other dads are carrying, find your own and wear it with pride!
I don’t recommend any particular diaper bag, but here are few that fit my style.
