Giuliana Rancic will undergo double mastectomy

E!'s Giuliana Rancic dropped by The Today Show with a somber update on her battle against breast cancer. The entertainment reporter has decided to undergo a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery in hopes of reducing her risk of recurrence.

E! host Giuliana Rancic returned to The Today Show this morning with an update about her breast cancer treatment.

"I'm going to move forward with a double mastectomy," Rancic said on Monday's show. "To be honest, at the end, all it came down to was choosing to live and not looking over my shoulder the rest of my life."

Two months ago, Giuliana, 37, appeared on the NBC program and revealed that she'd been diagnosed with breast cancer while seeking in-vitro fertilization , part of a lengthy journey toward parenthood with husband Bill Rancic.

The star of the Style Network's Giuliana & Bill disclosed that, while undergoing another round of IVF treatment, she was given a mammogram that detected the cancer.

Rancic wasn't going to have her first mammogram until she was 40, but her doctor urged her. When she learned she had breast cancer, Giuliana was floored.

"Through my attempt to get pregnant for the third time, we sadly found out that I have early stages of breast cancer. It's been a shock. A lot of people have been asking, we saw that you went and got IVF, are you pregnant? But sadly, we've had to put that off."

She underwent a double lumpectomy and a round of radiation in October, but doctors were not "able to get all the cancer out" in one breast, Bill explained.

Giuliana's chances of the cancer returning drop dramatically if she opts for the mastectomy. So she's doing just that.

If she had chosen to do another lumpectomy, radiation and medication, "I'd have to put off having a baby for several years," she said. "It's important to me to get the cancer out... 'Mastectomy' the word seemed so scary to me at first. After doing research and seeing the advancements, the surgery has come a long way from 20 years ago. The results can be incredible. Not only can it save your life, but you can come out feeling healthier and with a positive self-image."

Giuliana's surgeries, including a reconstructive procedure to rebuild the breasts, are scheduled for sometime later this month.

"Our goal is to be done with this by Christmastime and not look back," added Bill, 40.

Up All Night actress Christina Applegate made the decision to have both of her breasts removed after being diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer in 2008. As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, Christina has the breast cancer gene, BRCA1, which would have made a recurrence of the disease inevitable if she chose to keep her breasts.

He's more than just a pretty face: Actor Brad Pitt is being hailed a hero after offering emotional support to a suicidal man at a press conference in Sydney on Sunday.

Easy-on-the-eyes actor Brad Pitt has revealed that he's also an awesomely decent guy after comforting a suicidal man at a press conference in Australia on Sunday.

The humanitarian was meeting Sydney fans for a Q&A session, following a special screening of his new film Moneyball, when a distraught, struggling actor announced to the crowd that he was battling suicidal tendencies.

The man said he'd been suffering with depressive thoughts the night before the screening event, but credited Moneyball with giving him a "renewed sense of hope."

One observer told Us Weekly that Brad got "choked up" by the man's admission, but took it all in stride by offering a pep talk.

"He said: 'Look man, life is up and down, it's a vicious cycle, but you have to go through it and deal with that. You can be down, but you have to go through it and deal with that. You can be down, but then you can come back up again and every failure can lead to success.'"

Pitt later added, "It certainly is about perspective and a bigger view and about the long run. I think that's something we often forget with art, is that there's the long run. Things are cyclical. When you're up, you're up and when you're down, you're down. But it's moving -- always moving. I think that's an important thing to remember. And it's a big part of this film."

The attendees of the screening were moved by Brad's response. One called it a "touching moment," with the famous father-of-six even stopping to speak privately with the man as he exited the event.

"Brad handled the situation really well in front of several hundred people -- it was a difficult moment that shocked everyone… It was a touching moment. As he left the theater, he even stopped to talk with the guy to offer him some more words of encouragement because he was obviously fragile."

Ex-Miss USA Rima Fakih busted for DUI

Beauty busted! A lawyer for Miss USA 2010 Rima Fakih confirms that police in the Detroit enclave of Highland Park arrested his client on a drunken driving charge early Saturday.

Beauty queen Rima Fakih, a former Miss USA winner, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving near her home in suburban Detroit over the weekend.

Attorney Doraid Elder, who represents Fakih, says the Dearborn native, who won the coveted crown in the 2010 pageant, was taken into custody after being stopped by officers in Highland Park early Saturday.

Fakih appointed herself as a designated driver after deciding her companion was too drunk to get behind the wheel, only to realize that she, too, was intoxicated, the lawyer said.

Rima, 26, is "very saddened and very apologetic for the situation that she is in right now," Elder told The Detroit Free Press Sunday. 

The Kardashian doppelganger has courted controversy in the press before. Fakih was the first Arab-American to ever claim the Miss USA title, but she was one in a series of pageant queens to be the subject of a blush-inducing photo scandal.

Shortly after her pageant victory, a Detroit radio station released snapshots of Fakih dancing seductively in a 2007 station-sponsored striptease contest. Channel 99.5 FM's "Mojo In The Morning" published several images of the former Miss Michigan, clad in shorts and a tank top, gyrating on a platform surrounded by nearly 50 other women.

"The strippers there taught the contestants how to do moves like 'booty poppin' and pole dancing. Rima told us at the time that she was a model -- and her routine was awesome! She definitely deserved to win," head DJ Mojo said at the time. "We got phone calls from the Miss USA people and they're pissed off! We asked if Rima's going to be in trouble over these photos and they would not comment on it. We would hope she won't lose her title…"

Rima maintained that the pictures were actually taken during a promotional event hosted by a friend. She denied any wrongdoing.

Kate Major is missing

Kate Major is missing. The former tabloid reporter, who made her own headlines when she began dating reality star Jon Gosselin in 2009, is generating buzz again after vanishing over the weekend. Major, romantically-linked to Michael Lohan in recent years, was being treated for alcoholism in a Florida rehab facility when she disappeared on Saturday.

The former Star magazine reporter, previously romantically-linked to reality star Jon Gosselin and later Michael Lohan, has gone MIA after wandering away from a Florida hospital over the weekend.

According to her publicist, Major suffered a seizure on Saturday and vanished after being transferred from a Boca Raton rehab facility to a nearby hospital for treatment.

"Kate Major had a seizure in the Boca Raton Wellness Center yesterday and was rushed to the hospital. She was being treated in the hospital and somehow walked out of the hospital with no one noticing. We don't know if she's okay or if she has had another seizure. But she is missing and has only the clothes on her back, no money, no credit cards, no phone. We are very worried about her," the rep said in a statement issued Sunday.

Major, who filed a restraining order against Lohan in October, voluntarily checked herself into rehab for alcohol abuse last month. According to those close to the ex-tabloid reporter, Kate decided to seek treatment following an alleged drunken fight on a plane a few weeks prior.

Kate, Lohan’s sometimes fiancée, is the third woman in the last two years to accuse the Long Island native of being an abusive partner.

In October, Major told officers Michael grabbed her by the arm and threatened to throw her off the fourth-story balcony if she refused to perform oral sex on him, according to an affidavit from the arrest.

Lohan was also accused of throwing a remote control at Major and smashing her cell phone in a fit of rage. Kate suffered minor bruising in the Oct. 24 incident, investigators said.

In 2009, he was arrested in New York for striking and stalking his former fiancée, Erin Muller. He later leaked nude images of the woman onto the Internet.

In March 2011, the self-professed sober alcoholic and born-again Christian found himself in trouble with the law once again; this time he was accused of holding Major against her will.

Lohan -- who underwent heart surgery last month -- is currently on probation as part of a plea deal over the latest Major assault. He's attending a four-month domestic violence treatment program as part of his sentence.

Mindy McCready found hiding in Arkansas closet

Mindy McCready and her son, Zander, were found in Arkansas on Friday night. Why were they hiding in a closet?

Mindy McCready's dramatic ordeal involving the custody of her son, Zander, ended on Friday night when Arkansas police found the pair hiding in the closet of her boyfriend's home.

U.S. Marshals raided a home in Heber Springs, Arkansas late Friday night after several hours of surveillance.

"The child appeared to be in good condition when we found him ...he was in the closet with his mother," said David Rahbany, the chief deputy U.S. Marshal in eastern Arkansas.

The raid came three days after McCready disappeared with her son from Cape Coral, Florida. The troubled country singer failed to return the five-year-old to her mother's home after an unsupervised visit. The family soon filed a missing person's report.

Police later ordered the former Celebrity Rehab star to return her son by Thursday afternoon, but she failed to follow through. Instead, she corresponded with various media outlets proclaiming her intention to keep Zander with her.

"I'm a mom first," she told the AP. "No matter what happens, I'm going to protect my kid. If I have to go to jail, so be it."

No charges were filed against the singer, though charges are possible in the future. Her mother and stepfather, Gayle and Michael Inge, are relieved that the ordeal is over, though they're worried for their pregnant daughter's well-being. 

"We feel sorrow for Zander because he's traumatized and for Mindy," they said. "We just hope she does the right thing from here on out and that this is a wake-up call for her."

Brooke Mueller busted for cocaine possession

Brooke Mueller is back in serious legal trouble after being busted for cocaine and assault in a Colorado nightclub.

We never thought we'd say this and mean it, but it looks like Charlie Sheen's twin sons, Bob and Max, are better off with him than their mom Brooke Mueller.

Mueller, 34, was arrested at an Aspen, Colorado nightclub for a class-four felony charge of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and third-degree assault, according to the Aspen Times.

"It is alleged that she had in excess of four grams of cocaine, gross weight," Chief Deputy Assistant District Attorney Arnold Mordkin told the newspaper. Police were called to the Belly Up club around 11:30 p.m. Friday night after a woman reported an assault. She identified the culprit as Mueller, later found at a nearby club. 

The ex-wife of Sheen was booked and paid a $11,000 bond. She's ordered to return to Pitkin County District Court on Dec. 19 for arraignment.

"She's obviously a person who attracts a lot of media attention and we will handle this case just like we handle all cases," Mordkin added. "She'll get treated like we treat everybody else."

This isn't Mueller's first run-in with the Aspen police. She had a violent knife-and-choking fight with then-husband Sheen on Christmas Day, 2009. They separated soon after.

The sometimes-actress has battled substance abuse problems for years and completed a 45-day drug treatment program in July after she was spotted with a possible crack pipe. Those close to The World According to Paris star want her to get help, but acknowledge that she needs a serious intervention to do so.

"Brooke can't stay sober on her own," a source close to her told People. "Maybe this [arrest] will force her to go into a treatment center for a long stay. Thirty-day rehabs won't work for her. "

"Her family has been trying to get her to do this, now maybe the court will force her to get the help she needs! She has enough family to take care of the kids while she's away," the source added.

Her rep, Steve Honig, dismissed that source as bogus.

"I think anyone who is truly a friend of Brooke's would not be spending their time talking anonymously and behind her back to the media. I seriously question the validity of any comments made by these people alleging to be friends with Brooke," he said.

Well, he can't deny she needs serious, serious help.
